Since my sleeping plans have been delayed and I have some time to kill, I may as well take the opportunity to get shmart! nyah!1a) How does college work? Do we have 'teachers' or 'professors'? 1b) Heh... does detention exist, or are there other forms of reprisal? And who do we answer to: a principal? A dean? 2a) What does a typical college dorm look like? 2b) Are there huge 'central' bathrooms and kitchens, or are they small and integrated into the dorm rooms? 3a) When does college normally start? Or, rather: is the current RP-month September? 3b) The Maia war was around X-mas time, right? Then, would this be the first September (or other month) after the Maia war? Oh! Time killed. Nighterbais! (^O^)/ |

Those aren't stoopid questions. They're quite brilliant. And if I could read or write, I'd answer them, but unfortunately I have no idea what college is like except from what I see in the movies. But yayz for another opportunity to use a marshmallow!

Mnn... sadly I have only attended community college and then a vocational school, so I am not sure how real college is ALL the time, but from what I know... 1a) There are professors in the classroom. Most classes are structured as lectures with large assignments instead of worksheets and menial activities. We'll say this is a large school, so one can expect the class to be a quorum of 30+ students or more. (for lecture courses.) Of course there are labs and other hands on classes which are smaller. Either way if you mess any of this up I know for a fact me and E won't give a hoot. lol 2a) No detention that I know of in college, however there is a write-up system (at some.) We will just assume that applies to this school. It goes on a student record of sorts, and if the student fails to perform academically and misbehaves too much they can have the right to kick you out. I would think any institution would work thus. I would assume that the student would be "sent" to their department head, rather than the dean of the school. The big cheese of the department (science, english, sociology, psychology, etc.) and possibly the RA and upperclassmen in the student counsel maybe? ^___^; 2b) Dorm life is much different from off-campus life. An off-campus apartment scene would have a communal kitchen and two individual bathrooms. When I stayed at a dorm a few times it was co-ed with students "cooking" in their own rooms. Normally they are allowed a hot plate and a microwave. There was communal bathrooms (one for men, one for women) which was community-center style. You walk in, there were cubby holes for shoes and personal "baskets" which had all your shampoos and stuff. A long counter with sinks and a mirror, and then individual showers much like a locker room would have. Hope this helps! 3a) College is broken up into semesters. We can just assume that this one starts in the fall semester which, normally, begins end of August/early September. 4b) We will say this is the September immediately after the Endless Waltz Christmas War. Hope this helps! |

Thanks for the elaborate reply, Dez! Having stoopid questions answered is awesome! It does help a lot. My shmartness has just increased by 55%. All I 'know' about American-style high schools and colleges is what I've seen in movies. Dutch schooling is very different; the 'high school' ("middelbare school", after elementary school, for ages 12–16/18-ish, depending on the education level) I used to attend was named St.-Vitus College, so I'm perpetually confused at the terminology. Could probably come up with about five hundred more questions that I haven't found the answer to through Google, but at least now I have a basic understanding. And it's good to know When we are, too. Decided long ago that Zhang's birthday is on 16 September, so in RP-time that's very soon. Sexy sod is turning seventeen. Awww. |

I've spent three semesters at a community college and half of that time touring "real" schools, so I can say with a fair degree of certainty that there is NO detention in college. I've been subjected to administrative disciplinary action enough to know that you can still get kicked out for misguided pranks on teachers, leading student rebellions during Homecoming and Finals Week, and getting smart with your instructors in class. Dorms look differently depending on where you go, how much you're willing to pay, and how nutty the institution is. Mostly they're very plain with lots of white walls. Sort of like an asylum. Almost everything is centralized--bathrooms are communal, the kitchen area (if you HAVE one) is shared, and bunkbeds dominate all other furniture. Things like space heaters, personal grills, toasters, and even hair dryers are banned, along with any open-flame implement (candles, incense, etc) because dorms have the pyrotechnic content of dried kindling and a tendency to catch on fire. Semesters are divided into three categories: Fall (September-December), Spring (January-May), and Summer (May-July). Fall and Spring are "regular session", so they run for 16 weeks normally, and Summer is half that, so only 8 weeks. Students don't normally enroll in Summer session unless they fall into one of three subcategories: 1. Needs 1-2 classes to graduate, 2. Sucks at regular college, 3. Is a loser with nothing better to do (I fall into that last category, actually.). Other interesting trivia about colleges: -There is normally a club or organization on every campus for supernerds with unholy-high GPAs. It's invite-only. -Most colleges have some form of Christmas tradition. It usually involves the President of that particular school parading around campus dressed as Santa Claus. I've seen this in-person and it's quite frightening. -Colleges employ people known as CPs--Campus Police. These people are miserable, angry individuals whose greatest achievements in life were failing out of basic training or clubbing baby seals for fun. These were the kids that beat you up in high school and threatened you with brute force or creative torture if you ran crying to the teacher. Avoid them at all costs. -Cafeteria food is neither delicious, nor nutritious. You're better off going somewhere off-campus for vittles. Trust me. |

Well this also depends on the institution. Most large schools have decent food. I used to eat with my friends at JMU all the time and woah nelly the food there was AWESOME! *____* But then again, they were notorious for their food. |

Raped by school.

Hey, that means I'm the only one that actually attends a four year college! I'm special. ---- Addressing stupid questions, I'd like to point out something else about the food. This being a supposedly huge and illustrious school, and the pilots being forced into it as a rehabilitation program of sorts, I'm going to assume that they all have meal plans, which the ESUN is also paying for along with their tuition. Because HELL if Duo is going to agree to go to college and have to pay for it. Like he even COULD anyway. Generally schools that have mandatory meal plans (like mine) have a pretty good selection of food that is quite tasty/healthy. It all depends on which shops you go to. My school has a cafeteria that has popular fast food places like Pizza Hut and Wendy's, and also smaller cafe type places in the library and in building where classes are held, which serve packaged sammiches, salads, fruits, sushi, juice, coffee, scones and whatnot. Yea, it's sort of expensive, but if you have a mean plan you gotta use the money or you lose it, so you don't really care how much stuff costs. Concerning 1a) Not everyone that teaches is a professor. Most are, but lots aren't. Some are Dr.'s, graduate students, etc. |

My college can't afford teaching assistants, and we definitely don't have graduate students! You can't even get a Bachelors at TNCC! Associates only! We do however have "Adjunct Faculty," and they're very miserable people. Hell, sometimes they don't bother to even show up for class. Instead they nominate what they call a "student instructor for the day"--and that's how I ended up teaching Political Geography, American Lit, and Geology this semester. I always love it when they bring in college substitute professors for the female teachers that get knocked-up mid-semester. And our meal plans=vending machines. |
