What an exciting bear hunt!!! I had a pretty exciting bear hunt to the say the least. My group has spent the last 20 years hunting with great friend and outfitter Barry Kinch from Mountain Chutes Camp in Kenabeek ON. His camp is right on the Montreal river just outside Elk Lake ON. He has been the owner and operator there for 33 years. I'm sad to say that this fall bear hunt is the last. Barry has decided to retire from the outfitting business and has the camp for sale. My first night was pretty exciting to say the least. The weather did not look good but was going to clear so we headed to our stands. It didn't take that long before a good bear just appeared out of nowhere. He never went to the bait though and when he hit a bit of a clearing i pondered a shot but before i could act on my thoughts it absolutely downpoured! the bear took off. It rained for about 20min and then stopped. Right after in behind me i saw some black movement in the heavy cover. I got my bow ready, "he was back". To my surprise it was a different bear. He also never went to the bait but instead came directly to my stand. after standing at the base he then preceeded to climb my ladder to the second last rung and took some long hard sniffs then went back down man could i hear my heart pounding in my ears. He walked around a bit then right back up the ladder, this time i had bow in hand and ready for whatever came next. Finally he decided i was not a threat and went to the bait. This bear was only about 150lbs but he snatched the bait and walked off. Our baits our feed bag material, are attached to the tree at the 6' height, held with a tied loop made out of the stuff like bailing twine, you have to cut it to break it. Then it wrapped with steel wire around the tree and twisted tight. I've hung from that before and tried to move it, can't even budge it. I hunted the next night in extreme heat bet never saw a thing. The following night we got rained out again. after checking my trail cam, both bears had been in right after the rain ended. At 19:00 in walked the good boar and i got ready. To my surprise he followed the same route as the samller one but this time didn't take the ladder, straight up my tree! after putting the top of his head against the floor and stand and smelling my boots he went the bait. he gave me a broadside shot so i took it. He made it 50 yards before piling up and giving a short death moan. I had my last bear ever at Mountain Chutes. I'm going to miss it alot but like all good things, it was time to end. Now its time to look for a place to make more hunting memories Caution: The slight death moan can be heard, if not interested in hearing that then close video right after the shot. side note. You will see something green fall off on impact. Thats my lighted nock actually breaking on impact. Not sure why but it broke and didn't light until through the bear. The shot actually looks back due to the nock but in full video on screen its tight too the shoulder, actually a little too tight but was complete pass through and double lung, just missing the superior main artery above the heart. The boar went only 50 yards and was put on the scale and weighed 220lbs. He was my third largest bear, second largest with a compound. trouble editing for some reason so ignore the commentary! ![]()
