I just got home from a real roller coaster ride of a hunting trip.Bowhunter57,myself and our friend Dean all headed north to try our luck with the big black bears that live up up. When we got to camp we learned that we would be joined by two tv crews in camp with us. The Canadian Hitmen and John Hunt from hunt tv. As many of you must know by now John had a massive stroke the morning before the hunt and there was nothing anyone could do for him. This was a very tough day for all of us and I feel for his family. But the show must go on and the next day was opening day. I also got to have a special treat because our guide had arranged for two great houndsmen to come up and run some bears with the hounds.Matt and Andrew were great guys and really knew their stuff. It was fascinating watching how their dogs worked and how they would strike a track. They put three of their best dogs in a special platform on the truck and slowly drove the logging roads until the dogs lit up. It was awesome and we did get one good chase going but they caught up to the bear way too far from the road and they eventually called the hunt off. It was still very fun. The first night Dean scored on a nice young boar so we had broken the ice. Bowhunter57 filmed a nice sow for over twenty minutes but decided he didn't want to take the shot and was happy to film her instead, good on you for that Phil! Things were a little slow with only a few bear sightings but we knew we were in good bear country and that if we stuck with it good things would happen. On the third night at 8:35 I caught a glimpse of my first bear of the hunt and it was a monster!!! I started to get the shakes really bad and couldn't get them to stop. Then he just walked away.Fifteen minutes later he reappeared this time only fifteen yards from me but in some thick brush.I had no shot and he surely knew I was there because his nose was working overtime! Slowly he turned and walked towards the bait. It was 8:54 when he stepped out and I wasted no time in sending a bolt his way with my exomax. The hit looked good and with a mighty roar he evaporated back into the thick forest.I was sure I had got him when I could hear him rolling around but I went back to camp to get help anyway. It was fully dark when we took up the trail and it was clear that the passthrough performance I got from my slick trick tipped bolt the hit was a good one.I found him in about ten minutes 55 yards from the hit stone dead.I was in shock at the size of the bear,he was huge!! We hooked him onto the four wheeler and got him out.Back at camp we put him on the scales and he weighed in at a whopping 402 pounds!!! What an animal!! IT hasn't really sunk in yet how big he is but he is huge!! I even got my picture taken with Eric from Luminok who was in camp with us,he was happy to see I was using his product!! The only bad thing is it's going to be a big taxidermy bill for this guy! He is extra special! Here's a bunch of pics including his heart that I nailed with the shot! Enjoy!!
