Viewing pics; using a regular digital handheld

Was wondering if anyone's used a regular handheld camera to view their trail cam pics at the trail cam as opposed to bringing the card home. I have read that the card can get locked up, thus leaving you unable to ever view the contents. This ever happened to anyone?

Yup! I now carry my laptop with me in the bush. Download the pics and put the same card back in the camera.

Ipads also work good, a little slower to upload them but if you only have a handful of pics its nice and compact.

It has always bogled my mind why people bring there card home and go back or what ever. I either view them right there with my cheap digi cam or just swap out cards, they are cheap enough there is not really an excuse to not have multiple ones

Thanks guys.
I do have multiple cards and I do swap the one I bring home but even to see if the card or camera is working properly is my concern - thought the digital camera could be useful. I just recently pulled a card that has no pics on it, when I know the camera's been taking pics. So checking the card at the camera on a lap top or digital camera would have saved me some time and hassle. I would have been able to see there was something wrong and checked the camera settings right there.

Good points...

However I run some newer and older cameras and I run a lot of them. Some of my older ones run the lower memory cards and they are harder to find now a day. The newer ones take a wider range of cards with respect to card size.

Also, for some reason, so of my cams only work with certain cards. So in this case I have cards that are used in specific cameras only, hence the reason I bring my Laptop or Ipad in the bush with me.....

Running the cameras sure is an addiction though...lol just put a couple more out on a recently acquired property...

Cheers

i do the same bear hunting, pull the cards, climb up in and check them out.
I have had that issue swamp. however, if you put your card back in and reformat it, no issues, just don't forget.
With all my deer cams i just swap the card and head home, check it there. i've gotten into the habit of formating whatever card is in whatever unit, kind of a fail safe.
My bros has crazy amounts of money tied up in photography, he formats every card every time it goes in his equipment, its just good practice.
You should be ok as long as you format the card.
Theres a ton of cheap mini viewers out there now a days too

Thanks for your help. I do believe it is a card issue after all but I will have to confirm that soon, as soon as it stops raining! With lots of reading and everyone's help here, I think I know what I need to do.
