We are going up bear hunting for the first time. Don't care what we shoot, as long as we are legal. Is a sow legal with cubs? I could not find anything in regulations, but won't shoot sow with yearlings, but would if they are 2 yrs old (if legal) we would. Can anybody help me? |

A sow in the fall with cubs is legal. the onlly time she was illegal was when in the spring when we had a spring hunt. I am sure however the result is the same if you do shoot one with cubs. Death to the cubs. That was the whole argument on the spring hunt . In the spring the cubs are so small they are barely feet away from Mom at all times making it obvious that she has cubs. Now in the fall the cubs are a little bigger and all over the place. If you are especially quick shooting one to the bait you may see that the cubs coming running in to late. This can happen very easy if you are gun hunting away from the bait at a distance.. This picture for instance. I am sure this sow is legal But if you shot here the cubs would be mere snacks for some larger Boar.. ![]() My take on it all anyhow.. |

if i think the bear coming in is a sow i wait a good 10 min anyway, if no cubs probably a small bore or a dry sow. when hunting over bait will usually hang around for quite awhile and this will give the oppertunity to make sure there is no cubs, bonus of baiting. I make ever effort to try and tell if its a bore or not. waiting 10 to 15min works. i have shot dry sows before, not once in 20 years at our camp has anyone shot a wet sow by doing this. Cubs have to be taught to hybernate, if momma is shot before their first winter, spring or fall, they will die. Myself or guys i hunt with do not shoot any bears with cubs, no matter they age. Its possible that the bears need two winters with momma before they are good to go. It is legal however as far as i know, shouldn't be though in my opinion |

Agreed..One law that should be changed. Imagine how that could add to the growing Bear population |

I run cams on most all of the baits. Pictures show 99% of the time , the cubs are there with the sow. |

for sure, alot of the time i've seen cubs fly to the bait and mom hang back checking things out "behind the scenes". i did have a sow at a bait for a bit, close to 5min before she gave them the ok, thats why i wait if i think its a sow. trail cams are great for identifying bears. We also leave bait sites alone if sow and cubs are coming in daily, lucky we have so many to choose from i guess, bait sites tha is. |
