This was my first bear ever, taken June 1/12 in Alberta. I was working afternoons at the time and got off around 2am. I had a little extra energy and knew we had to get our bear baits cleaned up because the season ended the day before. I loaded up the truck and headed north. After pulling our stands, cameras and cleaning up the bait site it was only 7am so I decided to head northwest where the season was open until June 15th to give it one more try. After arriving to the area I headed down a long winding logging road in Alberta's beautiful foothills, stopping to glass clear cuts and riverbanks. After about 40 miles I was beginning to believe there were no black bears in Alberta. With my large double double and 2 energy drinks beginning to wear off I decided to head back still glassing with hopes of seeing something. About 10 miles from the highway I passed a clearcut with lots of green vegetation and new growth. Stopping several times but seeing nothing I carried on. Nearing the end of the clearcut I just happened to turn back and saw what seemed to be a bear but after not sleeping for nearly 24 hours I was sure I was seeing things. I pulled the truck up about 80yds, threw the clip in and racked the .270. Quietly walking back my eyes werent playing tricks on me and the stalk was on! I just stepped off the road and began through the thick scrub brush that lined the clearcut and a road grader drove by. I thought to myself it was over and the bear would take off but he didnt seem to mind so I used the noise to my advantage and covered some quick ground. I lost sight of him but he was feeding towards the centre of the clear cut so thats where I slowly approached. I caught a glimpse of him again heading back to where he was before so trying to be quiet I worked my way closer but after every step sounded like a crash of thunder I got to about 100yds. From my heart pounding and running all over this hill my first shot was terrible and he took off down the hill but only got about 10 steps and I put another one right behind the shoulder. After catching my breath and doing some celebrating I tagged, dressed and loaded him up for the 6 hour trip back home. I got some pics and paid my buddy $60 to finish the processing part because I was close to 40 hours with out sleep and my body was starting to shut down on me. Hes not the biggest bear, was under 200lbs but ya cant beat your first bear. It'll be a hunt I remember the rest of my life!
