I am confused about which way deer travel and the wind! Hunters are supposed to have the wind in there face but do the deer also travel with the wind in there face to know whats ahead or do they travel with the wind at there back to know if preditors are on there trail. Or does this Vary. |

Doe will walk with the wind in their face lots of times but as a rule Bucks tend to walk a cross wind, down wind of their target. The winds change all the time and on a very high level swirling is almost always. I think a lot of deer hunters don't understand just how far a whitetail can smell. I have seen deer pick up my scent from across a 300 yard field with a moderate wind, so if the wind is right they may wind you a long way off before you even know it. |

Hunt the wind thats right for the deer to make it by your stand.Big bucks like to cut the wind with it on there butts so they can see whats if front of them and smell whats coming in from behind. |

Hunting whitetail deer can be one of the most challenging animals on the planet and after hunting them for 20 some years I still don't fully understand why they do what they do. As a rule the most important aspect of the game is wind direction. Generally if you approach the location you want to hunt with the wind in your face and don't go to deep you have set your self up the best you can for the hunt. As far as the question, deer will travel from their bedding area to the food source no matter the wind direction. During the rut bucks will travel cross wind to the preferred doe bedding area, scent checking for hot doe's. This year I've been trying out hunting from different heights in my lonewolf climber to see if I could find the magic height where a deer could not smell me down wind. Of course there are many variables but on one occasion a buck winded me at 100 yards and hunting 40 feet in the air. You just can't fool their nose. Good luck with the rest of your hunts. |
