Thought I should use the doe tag before the season runs out. At about 7:15 I look over my left shoulder and see this doe standing 45 yds away, looking in my direction, after about a 5 minute staredown the deer took a couple of steps and while I don't normally shoot at 50 yds with a bow, I decided to let go. Hit the doe a little high but it run about 25 yds and folded over. When I decided to get down from the stand to retrieve the doe, I was surprised to see this doe was very dark almost black. What was also unusual was that the belly had very little hair and in some places it appeared to be just the skin. Not sure what to make out of this, but when we gutted the deer it appeared to be very healthy with a lot of internal fat. My buddy says the colouring is common for what he calls swamp deer. To be honest never heard of the term, anyone else have a thought. Picture isn't too clear, used the crackberry.

never seen one that dark. The swamp deer around here have stained black legs and faces, but the body is still majority normal coloured. very neat, I'd like to see a better picture. |
