Hey everyone. Just wanted to share my luck from 2011 with you and hopefully entertain you at the same time. 2011 almost didnt come around do to an impending major surgery on my neck, but instead of letting it get me down I redoubled my effort to harvest a beautiful high timed 8 pointer that eluded me last year. After many weeks of staking out a scrap line with zero success I took a step back and started to think about it. My freind George suggested I move a couple stands but the big question was wear and when. It was quite evident that almost all the deer were nocturnal and a full moon during the rut wasnt going to make it any better. I spent an entire day checking out a huge area of high grass before I found that one trail that lots of fresh sign. They appeared to be coming across the property fence at night then leaving before the sun came up ![]() I set my new stand 20 yards off of the trail , where it split into 2. Hopefully I could jump on one as he returned from a nights feeding. The first weekend the spot almost payed off as I had a nice buck move right along the trail but it was still too dark. I drew on him 3 times hoping to get enough light through my peep to get a shot but each time there wasnt enough time and he slowly sauntered off. 2 weeks later with the rut supposingly runninig full out I asked my boss for the day off and away I went bcak to the spot. This time I was extra careful by altering my approach to the stand and even following some spruces to break up any outline I might have from the bright moon. I wasnt in the stand 10 minutes when a tiny rustle of leaves from down the trail grabbed my attention. "Probably another of the 2000000000 squirrels that inhabit my woodlot" I thought. I turned in timie to see a VERY large buck approaching one of my scent bombs. How he got that close that quietly is amazing! I quickly drew my bow and was rewarded with 3 bright pins and lots of lght thru the peep. As he edged right up to the scent bomb I squeezed my release and was rewarded with a huge "CRACK" My heart felt immediately as I feared a shoulder blade shot but to my amazement he pancaked straight down. He only remained like that for seconds as he tried to get up, it was then that I realized I had somehow spined him. As he tried to get up I quickly sent another arrow thruogh his chest anchoring him. My heart was pounding and my hands were shaking,I needed to sit for a few minutes. ![]() I walked over to the buck slowly and it was then that I realized how truly big he was , he had to be 300 lbs and his rack was a long thick nine point with tons of mass. He had 0 Ground Shrinkage !!!!!!! ![]() George arrived with the ATV and trailer and in less then 20 minutes total time the deer was in the shed. I had never seen a deer this big up close so my guess of 300 is truly a guess. The next day deer hunters from all over Halton showed up to see it. News travels fast since i didnt know any of them LOL! None of the live weight's guessed were below 300. Well I still have that monster 8 for next year if I am able to hunt. as Hannibal Smith says " I love it when a plan comes together" For more detail and photo's check my story out in the deer contest section Darren |
