Went out behind my place deer hunting this morning. Had a close call that pumped me up. My deer usually move out at this time once the leaves fall and expose the minmal cover in the small bushes around my spot. I was walking back a laneway through 9 foot tall corn on each side. I came onto some nice very fresh tracks in the laneway. They lead down to our little evergreen stand and then went across in front of our box blind. It is pretty well useless right now because of the tall corn that runs within 3 feet of it. The deer was obviously going to cut through the corn and head across to a bush that usually holds several does. It is absolute no-trespass area. I had a good wind so I headed down the edge of the cornfield paralleling the side of the cornfield that he may walk. I then cut across to the other corner of the corn field. When I got there, I tried to sneak a peak down the edge. There he was - about 200 yards down the edge of the corn field. A nice young 8 pointer. I had a perfect wind. I got settled into a nice spot and waited. He got to within about 100 yards and began getting nervous. My guess is that he had spotted a bit of motion earlier in my peak out. He quit coming closer and nervously edged kitty corner across the field and away from me. Oh well - it was fun. Likely won't be too many more chances this year and that dam corn field is actually killing me this year. It is left standing too long. It blocks the whole area that I can hunt. I am surrounded by no trespass land except for the 50 acres of corn and my little stand of evergreens. It was some fun anyway! You gotta enjoy the hunt, not just the kill. |

Nothing a match wont fix. Just kidding. Why is the land all around you no trespass property. Is it a greedy sole permission hunter lining pockets? Or are all the landowners hunters. |

Actually, it's a case of eccentric people. To my east is an old farm that isn't occupied but the owner visits regular and takes his tractor back to the bush to make sure no-one is in it. To my southwest is a man that has apparently placed a gun to the head of a hunter on one occasion. I can hunt the north side of the road and the fields directly west of me but the bushes holding the deer belong to the eccentrics. Even the coyote hunters rarely try to push through that block due to these owners. |

By the way - my buck yesterday morning went into the bush belonging to the aggressive landowner. I got as close as I could get last night hoping he would come back out to me. 3 does came out into the harvested bean field but never came closer than 70 yards. They seemed very spooky in that wind last night. I don't know if that guy feeds the deer or what but they seem to hold close to his bush. |

Well my friends - here is my confession - I missed that same little buck tonight. I was in a perfect spot and he walked broadside in front of me at about 10 yards. I shot and never touched a hair. My grandson was actually watching from about 500 yards and thinks he ducked when I shot. I think I shot over top. He never even knew a person was there. He bounded away at the sound, stopped about 200 yards down and looked around for a bit and then jumped across the ditch into the bush and stood just inside the bush watching out. That is of course the bush that belongs to the eccentric that likes to threaten hunters. I just can't believe I blew this perfect opportunity!!! It's going to take me a few days to get over this one. I had my chance for my deer anyway and it was exciting. |

You are right about that Swamp Buck. He can pay me now or pay me later. I just need to fix in my numbskull to shoot lower on those close shots. This should have been meat in the freezer. My only consolation to ease my troubled mind is the fact that at least he wasn't a big 12 pointer and this experience should be an everlasting reminder for me. |

Sure had a hard time going to sleep last night. Going out to find the arrow this morning and see what happened. I didn't want to step into the field last night because I am pretty sure that young buck didn't even realize what made that noise.. Edited by thenrifish, Nov 17 2011, 06:44 AM.

Well I followed his tracks right into the bush 175 yards down the bean field. One good thing, not a drop of blood or hair. What puzzles me is that I can't find the arrow. I don't know if it bounced off his back when he ducked down or it may glanced of a twig or weed between us. I looked out to about 300 yards for the arrow. I will see him again. He didn't have a big rack but the depth of his tracks make me think he is a bit heavier than I thought. This was a great spot but it's right on the corner of a bad bush. That's the big reason I have be avoiding that location but it is a high traffic little corner of the corn field and corn is beat up pretty good. They have been feeding up high on the cobs while they were still soft and lots of fresh tracks also. I think a deer can be taken there within a couple of nights but I am really concerned that it will go into the madman's bush before it dies. Edited by thenrifish, Nov 17 2011, 09:14 AM.
