After a long morning of exploring some great moose habitat and finding ample sign of the impending rut, I decided to head back toward the truck as my belly told me it was time to refuel. Along the way I managed to arrow a couple of spruce grouse and I was looking forward to some breaded legs and breasts. I was nearing the logging road and as I crested the hill where I had noticed fresh bear scat earlier in the morning, I noticed a large dark shape behind a screen of alders. My first fleeting thought was "That must be Chuck". Chuck (Deermagnet) and I were supposed to radio each other and meet back at the truck around lunch time, but it was soon very apparent that shape was not human. It was a bear. I was 50 yards distant with enough cover between us for a stalk and the wind was good. I dropped my birds, pulled up my face mask and knocked an arrow. The knee high grass and lack of dead branches made for some quiet going and soon I was within 25 yards. The bear had only to step to the left or the right where there were two windows through the foliage. Abruptly the silence was broken by the chattering hand held radio in my pocket and the bear bolted straight away. It was Chuck calling. I got on the radio promptly, relaying these words " Bear running toward the truck - bear running toward the truck!". I could only hope Chuck was there and heard my message. I headed back up the hill to retrieve my dropped birds, thinking what a cool encounter I just had. When I turned my head to look back down the hill, I could hardly believe my eyes. The bear was running back in my direction. I again dropped the sprucies I had just picked up, and reknocked my arrow. The bear had come to a stop in one of my "shooting windows". I quickly made 10 yards on the bear and drew back my Mathews. I settled the 40 yard pin on vitals and touched off. Much to my dismay, my wasp broadhead clipped an alder branch at the top of the window, redirecting the shaft to unknown parts. Again the bear bolted, this time running a tight circle, and unbelievably stopping in front of the same "shooting window". Again my 40 yard pin was covering vitals, but this time I compensated slightly and let fly. The hit sounded good and the bear instantly disappeared from view. Some mad scrambling, branch breaking and falling rocks were heard in the following moments, giving way to three loud sighs. I immediately approached the area and found the bear expired only 10 yards from the impact site because it had attempted to climb a nearby rockface. I snapped a quick shot of the solid 200 lb dry sow with my camera and reconvened with Chuck at my truck. In my excitement, I managed to get my pickup good and stuck. Needless to say we had some work ahead of us, and we were late for lunch and forgot to get some good pics of my bear. By all rights that bear should have been long gone after the first "chance" let alone the second. It's funny how things come together and how fast scenarios unfold. It must have been written in the stars somewhere.
