l guess they are keeping track of his location.
If it's got fur, feathers or scales it's in trouble

cool! Did he have to contact natural resources? The meat might not be edible if certain tranquilizers were used on it.

Never heard of this before.
Do you know something we don't?

If that bear was tranquilized, weeks or months ago, I doubt there would be any linger effects to worry about.
The MNR has to use safe tranquilizers knowing that a bear may be harvested and used for human consumption.

most bears that are tagged or collard are done in the winter in the den. They do alot of them if they find dens, may have nothing to do with a nuisance bear at all and was tranquilized in January or February. I'm sure the ministry or University would like to know. Information both ways would be helpful

I've heard tell of something along those lines before and had just recently read something similar in the hunting regs about tagged or collared moose.

A little more to the story. The bear had 2 ear tags as well the collar the tags had 1-800 #'s and a message to call before eating. We called and they had a fella from the MNR bear program out to see us and collect the collar. He was quite friendly and gave us quite a bit of info on this bear. The bear had been removed from a campsite at the start of Aug, he was tranquilized and collared at that time.Because of the short time since he had been tranquilized the meat was deemed unfit to eat.(if I remember correctly he said you had to wait a year) They offered my cameraman a new tag and he kept the hide,They also said they would try to find him a old collar or perhaps one that was similar for his mount .The GPS collars are very $$$$$$$$. Also they said they will send him the GPS mapping of this bears travel since he was collared . (Pretty Cool )

Thanks, I need to file that away for future reference.
I've not seen any tagged animals, but you never know.

Great info, thanks for sharing. Our camp got a tagged bear. It was tagged in the den. I forget the age of the bear, it was like 18 or something crazy like that, one of the oldest bears they had on record. It had travelled 150km over its time tagged.

Thats a great story. Congrats on a unique trophy.

Here is something I was told a few years ago by someone in the know about those ear tags. Each year they use a specific colour. So if you see an ear tag and its white, the white may be what they used in 2009, blue is 2010 yellow 2011 ect ect. Any bear that was tagged this year would be deemed not fit for human consumption.

As far as the colars go I think Onmedic is on the mark. Most bears are colard in winter for research reasons and are usualy done by University research groups. They don't make a habit of collaring nuciance bears. Not saying they don't, just not normal practice.

To have a bear mounted with the colar would be sooo unique and cool. Congrats and post the pics.

Unfortunate it was unfit to eat. But on the plus side having the movement recorded could be an asset to the future re-placement of nuisance bears, great story. Thanks for sharing. cheers11
