May 25th Well early on in the season (second Monday) I failed to report that I had whiffed on a beauty Tom, to say I was bummed was an understatement. I was sure it was a clean miss as there was no feathers, blood and he flew away without any issues, just rushed my shot and paid for it. It was confirmed he was alright about a week later when I seen him out strutting for his hens, I scouted him out a few mornings since and he was not roosting in his usual spot so I had not set up on him again. Was not planning on hunting this morning as I was meeting Dad at 8 to cut wood after my midnight shift. On my way home from work I usually do a drive by some of my spots to see what I can see as it has already been light for over an hour, well I see the big boy out working a few hens and in a perfect spot for me to get in and set up on him. I figured Dad would understand if I was a little late so I burned home got suited up and headed out to see if I could get him in. As I got back there the birds were gone but I knew where they were headed so I set up accordingly. Within 15 minuted I got him to gobble, 10 min later he gobbled again and it was clear he was on his way. I was set up on a bush trail and knew that if and when he did show himself he would already be in range. With one more thunderous gobble I got the gun to where it needed to be, he cleared the corner and I dropped the hammer on him. Sweet sweet revenge . I knew he had a dandy beard from my previous encounter but didn't realize he had the spurs to match. 22lbs, matching 1 3/8" spurs and a 10 1/2" beard. Of coarse on my rush to get out there I didn't bring the camera so I headed home to get changed for wood and headed to tell Dad the news. After I had had enough wood for the day and was in need of some sleep I headed home to get camoed up again for some pictures. Didn't realize my camera had crap all over the lens until I had the bird cleaned and loaded the pic's in the puter before bed, oh well still look alright. On a side note this has been the only bird all season I have been able to call away from hens, the first encounter had him with the same 5 hens who were cutting and doing the fighting purrs so I got real aggressive and he came in but I didn't do my part. Today he was with the hens again and although they were quiet I was still able to call him away. ![]()
