I was finally able to put the hammer down on one the other day. This season has been a tough frustrating one for me. Opening day saw me and my buddy tyler set up about 150 yards from the roost. We had a whole bunch of jakes gobbling on the roost and gave them a few yelps to let them know where we were. We knew there were no tom's on this property from the scouting so we were ready to shoot a jake if we had the chance. After fly down, they were on their way to us. We managed to get 6 jakes in 10 yards, all gobbling at the same time non stop in our face. All we could do was smile. I picked the biggest bird and tyler picked one on his side. On the count of three, 2 shots rang out and only one bird fell. I have no idea what happened but my bird survived. I think I may have jumped a bit from the shots and missed Here's a pic of Tyler and his bird. ![]() I hunted hard that week and ended up going home annoyed and frustrated each day. It seemed the birds would be in the field every time I wasn't. We hunted near the roost one morning and had 7 jakes and a hen hang up 60 yards in the bush staring down our decoys, but wouldn't come closer. I even tried stalking and crawling through mud on about 10-14 turkeys, however with that many eyes, I was spotted. It sucked not being able to seal the deal but it sure was nice being out in the woods. I landed a new job the week after and wasn't able to get out for quite a while but it all came together this past Monday. I slept in and wasn't planning on hunting. I took a peak at my spot at around noon and noticed some turkeys in the field and with the leaves on the trees now, I figured I could sneak up on them and gave it a shot. I managed to get set up 60 yards from them and waited. Peaking through the trees I only noticed one left and decided to crawl. I got within 20 yards and noticed she was a hen and that she was coming right towards me so I hung tight. She stopped directly across from me not 5 feet on the opposite side of the tree line and started dusting in the field for a good 5 minutes. After that she walked into the bush. I was tempted to go home as they all disappeared, but decided to take a walk to the back grassy field behind the bush. Standing in the open, I gave a few yelps and thought I heard a gobble. I slowly looked behind me and spotted at least 10 turkeys walking out of the bush into the grass. I stood still and watched them get into the tall stuff, heading towards this small strip of trees in the middle. The birds were on to me and were alert and running towards the trees. I chased after them, ran around the trees and spotted them heading out of the tree patch. At one point I had the bead on one jake, but he quickly ran into the grass.. I dashed around another tree into the open and there they all were, running like the wind. All I saw were red heads and small beards. I pulled the gun up, saw a beard, no other turkeys in the line of fire and shot and had one doing the death dance. Sure this hunt wasn't text book and felt more like a rabbit hunt, chasing them through the grass and shooting on the run, but man did it get my heart racing. He weighed in at 18.5 lbs, had a 5.5 inch beard and had small nubs for spurs but had a decent tail with two longer feathers. I may not tag out, but I'm happy I'm not eating tag soup. ![]() ![]() Edited by mike2355, May 25 2011, 06:14 PM.

There's two things on a turkey you can't eat..............beards and spurs. The younger the turkey, the better the eating.

Mice can eat beards though..I left the beard and tail on our work bench in the garage and the next day the beard was gone. I'm assuming a mouse stole it haha |
