Spent the last week in the woods every morning but had 2 other hunters with me that have not filled a tag and they were top priority, brother 'from Alberta' and my dad. Made it out with my dad to one of his spots Friday May 13 while my bro spent the AM getting licences, beer and who knows what else. On our way back to the bush the birds started to sound off and I looked at my dad and he had that look of excitment 'or so I thought', you have any tickets on you and I just chuckled. In the fence row he goes to do his deed and we were on our way. Just tucked into the bush alittle ways and picked our tree and I let out a series of soft yelps and clucks and 10 mins later the bird was on the ground and running in and my oldman had his first of the year down and back at the vehicle by 6:20. 19 3/4 lbs 13 1/2" beard 1" and 1 1/8" spurs Brothers turn to try and whack one with the bow. 3 days of hard hunting and some heavily pressured and wary birds, we had some close encounters but not close enough. The weather was the SHI*S, with high winds and lots of rain but we made best of it. On Tuesday May 17 my brother opted to hang up the bow and shoulder the gauge due to the weather. We made it to one spot seeing acouple jakes that would not commit and backed out to look for some birds in the fields. Cruised by one spot we've been seeing 2 toms in on a regular bases, but also been seeing numerous vehicles parked around the property so never bothered to ask. This time NO vehicles and the 2 birds were out doing there thing and so was the land owner so stopped and asked. Turns out that we were the ONLY people that asked for permission and we were told to kick everyone else out "GO FIGURE" TRESPASSERS! We hurried to the other side of the bush and headed our way in with my brother stopping and saying hen, dad looks with the binos and says NOPE. 2 more steps and my brother stops again and says hen and that he can see the tom. Down he goes and me and dad kneel down 10 yrds behind him as the hen works her way through with the big guy tagging behind. 32 yrds and BOOOOOOOOOOOM and my brother BUSHWHACKED him and his tom was down. Also got it on video. 20.2 lbs 8 7/8" beard matching 1 1/4" spurs I'll try and get some pics off them to post |
