Well Sat morning I was asked to take a friend out to try and bag another turkey. So Tom went out and roosted 2 toms from the road and we setup for them the following morning. This was our first time hunting this property. We hunted the farmers sons property opener and bagged a nice double. This property is a little tougher to hunt with 3 different creeks that flow into Kettle creek plus a massive ravine and a set of rail road tracks. Tom ensured me he saw a few turkey`s in this field the evening before. We got there extra early picked a nice tree along the fields edge cut a few nice shooting lanes for him and the wait was on. We were on a nice funnel spot and we weren`t going to be disappointed! As the fog started to roll in again we heard one fire off to some yotes a few 100 yards away. As it became a little light we had another gobbler fire off about 100 yards away on top of the ravine. Then we heard a few hens as well. This gobbler was fired up! He gobbled his head off for over 30min and then dead silence. The property across the old dead end road was hot too! We head over 6 shots in the first 20min of legal time, just NUTZ! As we were talking about WWIII across the road we had 5 birds pitch down 100ish yards away on top of the hill and started heading across the field in front of us. I told Tom to get his gun up and get ready. All 5 birds where hens but we know Mr. Tom wouldn`t be long behind. I had my DSD Jake and breeding hen out 15 yards in the field and the hen`s didn`t give much attention. 15-20min goes buy, Tom notices the top of a fan on the other side of the hill. The Hens were scattered all threw out the field and it was just a matter of time before the gobbler worked his way over. He disappeared over the hill and no sign of turkey`s for another few min. Then we see a red head pop up to our far left threw the corn stubble. He notices the jake and starts making his way over. Tom crept his way to my side to get a clear shot. Once the Tom noticed the breeding hen in the corn stubble he started spitting and drumming and ran over to the decoy and was face to face with the jake! A few yelps head goes up bird goes down. From the time we saw his bright red head to the time he was down was a matter of 25-30 seconds! I have never had a bird work that quick. I had my video camera on my lap too but didn`t have a chance to get it up. As we are taking pics and cleaning up we had another gobbler fire off not 50 yards behind us on the other side of the creek. We gabbed our gear and got out of there before we spoked him. 18lbs 9 3/4" beard 1 1/4" and 1" spurs ![]() ![]() ![]() kupt |
