SKINNER AKA BLUTIC IS DA MAN !!!!!! My plan this year was thinking that I would be heading back to Ottawa area to hunt again but ,,, With a new little girl on her way in 3 weeks from now , that plan changed a long time ago and I was give a choice this year to A- Hunt Turkey in the spring ( Which being away for a week that close to the due date ,,, not a good idea ) OR B- Go on the planned moose hunt with some good friends in September. The moose hunt had been planned for the past 2 years so a commitment to a group is part of being in a group so ,,, Moose hunt it is. THEN IT HAPPENED ;D ;D ;D ;D Shannon says to me off the cuff that " Since you have to go with me to Toronto anyway while I go for my training ,,,, You might as well see if you can Turkey hunt with Scotty or Ken while were down there " With in an hour Skinner calls back and the plan is set for the hunt. ;D On Monday around noon Shannon drops me off in New Dundee , Scotty and I grab the gear and into his trunk we go to start my hunt. Being the afternoon we scout out some areas and look for some working birds and such to get a game plan for the next day and a half. The next day we are at a farm where some good birds have been working but the birds would not commit to any sweet music that we could offer so it was time to run and gun. 8-) It was explained to me that the birds in this area work large tracks of areas and don't pattern very well ,, Here today , gone tomorrow. Due to hunting pressure ? or predators ? or just the nature of the birds ,,, This is what we had to work with. After a couple of unproductive sits ,,,, Skinner took me to a spot I had been to with him before and we walked in and did a couple set ups. As we worked the bush to a different spot I noticed some furry little critters not 10 feet from me. YOTE PUPS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFVyPkX-XtI We video the little guys for a few minutes and Scotty worked the call and BANG Gobble !!!!!!!!!!!!! We found a couple beech trees to sit on and he was coming hard. He got to 60 yards and the gun was ready ,,,,,, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgPrUKItZOg The bird turned and walked away ! > He saw the den and the pups ! We both looked each other and new we should have moved farther away from the den but ,,, That's Huntin. We worked a couple other areas and nothin so we stopped hunting at 6:30 and checked out some spots to see if we could see some birds working to roost. Being that it was my last morning the next day ,, A Jake with 6 hens looked promising and we planned on them for the next morning. We got in early and I took a position under an apple tree that was a good spot for other guys who have hunted there and it set me up well for birds in the field. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpy5HLk1GEo As day broke the Jake hammered out the gobbles. Scotty elected on us not to call as these were pressured birds and letting them work to see if they worked into us. One hen 2 hen 3,4,5,6 hens flew down directly in front of me and now just the gobbler was needed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKAtUHe7YV0 There at the edge of the field he broke out. Took a look around,,,, Saw a shape under the apple tree ( pressured bird ) run out to the hens , circled them once and ran and then flew off Busted on the last morning in the best set up we had. Lucky for us we didn't give up. We went to the farm were we worked that bird by the den to try for him or another bird again. After a few set ups we hear a gobble 8-) He sounded like he was in a field on the other side of the one we were in so we got to some thick pines the separated the two fields and watched. The bird was too close to the edge of the field but in the bush for us to cross the field , so me on my belly I set the gun on my seat for a rest and we started. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJSwn-zj7_U Before long the tom was strutting into us but he must have though the hens were in the next field behind us and crossed the pines out of gun range and into the next field. I belly crawed to the other side and there he was strutting away at 60 yards again as skinner started to call. He couldn't see the bird but he continued to gobble so we worked him. The strutter turned and was making a bee line too us. I could hear movement behind me . " Scotty , Don't move , he's commin in !!!" Scotty was to far behind me and didn't know the tom had changed direction. Scott was exiting the pines on the other side to call from another area which was a great idea but didn't know the bird was now on his way in fast. BUSTED Were done , we knew it was over and skinner was laid down on his back , striker in hand holding his head ready to jump off a bridge ![]() We sat there , I had a smoke and we talked about what could have been . I knew how he felt and it wasn't his fault , As he or I would say , Its Hunting ! We picked up and were heading out as Shannon would be calling any minute when it happened The 11th hour call Gobble gobble gobble , I didn't hear the first one and thought skinner was just hearing things and hoping he heard a gobble after what happened but YES there it was a gobble 8-) We run into the bush and found a big tree as the tom was a commin and we didn't have any time before he would be there . The spot only gave me at best 15 yards to shoot but at that time and being the 11th hour , I was taking it. The bird gobbled a hundred times and hung up in front of us at about 20 yards but I needed him at 15 to get a shot, Then it happened ,,,, The phone was vibrating,,, The call was happening ( Ended up being ont gobbler ) I didn't answer and then a white, red and blue head broke the elevation and the a beard . KAAAAbooooooooooom ;D Scotty did a heck of a job getting me on 3 pressured birds in about a day and a half. We only killed one but the other birds Scotty and I fugared they were too small anyway ! 8-) 9" beard 1,1/8 spur 20.5lb Tom ![]()
