What a strange year so far. With the late spring I've been busy on the trout front operating the fish ladder and overseeing the clubs regab work which is 2 weeks behind. Not to mention trout/turkey and Easter in 3 days back to back. And I lost access to my good property where I could use a shotgun, so my only option is a farm close to home with few birds and bow only. My first day in the woods was May 2nd. I heard a hen and saw one yote, but not one gobble. After 9 am I took a walk in the forest and my calling pulled another hen in. I froze when she popped out of nowhere as to not spook her. It worked. She walked, fed and clucked her head off to within 2 yards of me standing wide open in the woods. Day 2 went much better. I had a bird gobble from the roost. I was set up in a sweet spot in my blind by 5:10 am, with two decoys out. The bird hung out at 150 yards at the end of the field for an hour. Then three ladies arrived and gave my decoy spread some flare. Tom came running down. But...the girls turned left and made the interception. He strutted for 15 minutes as they fed, all the time only 15-30 yards from me...with dense forest in the way. No clear shot and finally they went the wrong way. Day 3 I had my seven year old daughted out on another small property I had never hunted. Gobble on the roost again, and the bird hung at a fence. He finally made it to the field and locked up at 60 yards. I think he did not like the blind, or maybe all the darn deer that kept showing up...counted 11 deer. Hmmm, I'll need to buy a few extra tree stands! This morning it came together. A lone gobbler on the roost, he walked the field edge again trying to entice my decoys for two hours. Then he gave up, no doubt he was embarrased my decoys didn't come to his strut. Then a hen came by and almost crawled in the blind with me. An hour after the hen left he gobbled behind me. I changed up calls and he came in for a closer look. 20 yards with my compound. The rage broadhead dropped him in 30 yards. 9" beard 1" spurs 22-24 pounds (on my fish scale). Good luck to all! John
