With me tagging out yesterday that only left the warden's second tag to be filled. I only have one spot where we can sunday gun hunt so we were going back to the well one last time. We were sitting at the tree by 5:00 and shortly after a tom roosted not 75 yards away started his non stop gobbling performance. I was thinking that this might be over fast when all the hens started to fly down and land in the winter wheat field right in front of us. He took a couple minutes longer to fly down and by the time he did the four hens had moved out about a hundred yards into the field and he went right to them. He stopped on the high spot and started to strut and gobble and strut and gobble some more. He was putting on a real show but not coming into range. Finally all the hens left the field to the north and he was out there all by himself.I only set a jake decoy this morning thinking of trying something a little different. He would come towards us whenever he wasn't gobbling and he got to about sixty yards and just froze up.After a minute or so he turned and walked in the direction all the hens had gone. We made a quick move about fifty yards and waited. The hens had actually doubled back and were now south of us but he kept on going north right off the property. He was still gobbling like crazy when he started to come back. He was a little too eager for his own good and when he came past us at about thirty yards the Warden knocked him over with a tasty load of winchester's finest hevi 6's! It's been a tough season this year with the birds being off most of the time but it was nice to seal the deal on her second tom and tag us both out for this season!
