This morning I took out a couple of guys from work that I've been promising to take out. It was very strange for me to still have a tag at this point in the season but I did.We went to a great spot first thing in the morning and we had at least three toms going on the roost. I thought we were in good shape until all the shooting started from every direction around us. I'm not sure if any of the shooters actually got a bird or not because there was always two shots and one time three followed closely by three more . So needless to say we didn't see any turkeys at that spot. We decided to move on and check a few other spots out in hopes of spotting a strutter out in a field but no such luck there either. I figured if their not out strutting they must be in the bush so about10:30 we got to a spot of mine with some big bush and went for a hike. I knew at least one good bird was in there because he went the wrong way on me once already this season.By 11:00 we were sitting at a nice tree, all three of us facing a different direction with me facing what I thought would be the least likely spot for one to show up in. On my first set of calls this tom cuts me off and he's close. A few minutes later he sounds off again and this time he's really close.I tell the guys to get ready and then I can hear him drumming. He came in through the heaviest brush near us right in front of me at about twentyfive yards looking for the nice little hen he had just heard.I knew the guys would never get a shot off at him so when he stepped in front of my gun I let him have it! The guys were pumped that we got one and they both knew they wouldn't have been able to shoot him. They were happier then me! He was a nice bird at 19.6 lbs,1" and 15/16" spurs and a 9" beard.I'll take him any day!
