I was out again this morning on a nice rainy morning but at least the hurricane winds had died down. About five thirty a pair of coons got into a good scrap along the river and this made the first tom sound off about 200 yards from me,right where he is suppossed to be! As it got light I could tell that I had at least three gobblers going and one was within a hundred yards. We got so much rain the last couple days that the fields are all flooded and just about any low spot has water in it. I had a hen fly down onto the field and slowly make her way over to Paris. At least she was a nice hen and not one of the bitchy ones I've been dealing with all week. When she got to Paris it was clear that they were now bff's and she just stood their hanging out with my decoy giving the odd soft yelp or cluck. That's when the gobbling started to get closer and I knew I had to spin around the tree for a shot without spooking the real hen at twelve yards. I was able to do it in time to see a jake step into the opening where he could surely see my two decoys and walk right in. Then I heard another thunderous gobble and the big guy stepped into view. He took one look at the bff's and he must have thought it was his lucky day because he starting coming in very quickly. At under thirty yards he stepped into a large opening just before the field edge and I let him have it! It was his lucky day! He got to eat two ounces of Winchester's finest for breakfast! He's a real nice bird but not very photogenic due to all the water and mud he flopped around in. It's been awhile since I've had to work so hard for a bird but I was in one of my best spots where I've shot six turkey's before. Home before eight and I feel great! Tale of the tape: 23.1 lbs. 8 3/4" beard 1 1/8" and 1" broken spurs. He scores out at 38.75 Goose smasher
