I am very fortunate to have a straight afternoons job this time of year.My daily routine everyday is to drive my oldest daughter to her bus stop which his 10 minutes from where we live but we wont get into that .Anyways after dropping her off its off to meet up with a bunch of retired guys that are out everyday chasing coyotes.Usually everyone has a designated spot to check for fresh tracks ,then we meet at the local coffee shop and plan our morning pushes depending on what was seen. This morning was no different dropped the daughter off and then off to my area to check but this time I could hear one of the old boys looking for help.He already had one coyote down and was watching another in the field.I rushed to his location and by the time I got there some of the other guys were there also and we were ready to flush him out of the block when one of the guys comes over the walkie talkies and says the GARBAGE TRUCK DRIVER just called him and said he is watching a coyote as they speak just down the road from where we are. That is the nice thing about living in a small community, everybody knows everyone. So off we go,we surround the block and within minutes the second coyote is down.So now its back to the original coyote we planned to push out.We figured he had held up in a big row of cedars so we sent 2 walkers in down the cedars and within 5 minutes the 3rd coyote was down,1 for the walkers which doesnt happen often. So within a half hour to 45 minute span we had 3 coyotes down. That makes up for the days that I can remember chasing one coyote for 6 hours straight walking in snowshoes only to have the coyote get by the blockers and get over the lake bank. This happened on more than one occasion, but the exercise is good and I DONT MIND WALKING AND FLUSHING THOSE COYOTES TO THE OLD BOYS.As a group with the 3 today we have now shot 47 and I have got 8 of the 47.I dont always remember to bring the camera with me but I do have some pictures that I will try to post this weekend since it sounds like were in for crappy weather anyway and the big buck and bull show is on in Tilbury on Saturday so probably wont be hunting anyway.

our gang has shot 6 out of the same block (our home block where we all deer hunt) there are still fresh tracks behind my house every morning, 6 crossed down at the sideroad where they normally do last night. We are still polluted with them. You kill a dominate pair, another bunch will move it. |

No were right here in KENT COUNTY along the shore of lake erie. All these coyotes have been shot within a 10 mile stretch .Were west of Rondeau provincial park, and its like songdog said you kill a couple in one block one day and the next day 2 more move right in and take there place.Last year we killed 22 coyotes in the same block that was 1km each way, they just kept on coming. |

Here are a few pictures of the 8 that I have shot so far. .I would have to say one of my favorite hunts was the reddish colour coyote in one of the pictures I posted. My brother and I were the walkers on this push.We had a pair of fresh tracks going into a small swail that was thick and nasty to walk through but the coyotes loved it cause it held lots of rabbits and lots of cover. We went in a HOWLING like a couple of loose beagles that had been caged up for months.Usually it didnt take long to get a response from the blockers that the coyotes were out over the walkie talkies but on this day these 2 coyotes held tight right to very end then broke out and did what they always do,go in two different directions. We concentrated on the gray one that had come out first ,he looked to be the larger of the 2 .He was had his mind made up where he wanted to go and he wasnt looking back.Lucky for us we had a guy waiting for him at the next concession.ONE DOWN ONE MORE TO GET!.The other one had got across the road into the next block where there was lots of places for him to hide, lucky for us it had snowed the night before and it was easy tracking so my brother and I got back on this ones track and the chase was on again. He took me through some of the nastiest crap I have ever walked through.Thorns galore,at points I was on my hands and knees crawling through onhis track barking like a beagle.I felt like Iwas playing the part pretty well.Finnally my brother spotted him breaking out ahead of us towards the blockers. We radioed the blockers he was on his way,but minutes later the blockers resopnded saying he had not come across the open field.Itold my brother that can only mean one thing hes straight ahead in this small little thicket that had a little pond out in the middle of the field. The plan was for my brother to take the track and I would stay on the outside to get a shot when he popped out.My brother goes in and starts tracking him and yells to me that the tracks are heading in my direction.I look around and there are no tracks coming out and I can see my brother at this point. Were talking back and forth trying to figure out how a coyote just disappears like that. Then I noticed this small brush pile that was drifted over with snow so i began to jump on it and still nothing. Then I looked to the right of the pile there was a thorn bush that was kinda collapsed over and covered with snow. There he was not more than 5 feet away sprawled outon his belly staring up at me.I quitely motioned to my brother where he was, pulled back the hammer on my Browning BLR 223 LEVER ACTION and put a end to a fun but exhausting chase.

Got out again with the old boys again this morning.Tracks everywhere didnt no where to start.2 got away and I shot 1 at a running shot at about 250 yards, might have been some luck involved there.I have the whole story posted under the predator contest thread but here is a picture.Notice the lucky QUALITY DEER MANAGEMENT HAT in the photo.Thats 2 days in a row I wore that hat since winning it in Tilbury on the weekend.I think this has become my favorite hat.
