“You think so huh?”

“I do.”

“But how can you know that?”

“You just have to trust me.”

“Hm.”

“Hey I’m not saying that you aren’t good, I’m just saying that he’s better.”

“Hm.”

“Now, don’t be sad, don’t be sore. I didn’t mean to offend you, I just don’t want to see anything happen to you.”

Roy shrugged and threw some money down on the bar as he left the building. He didn't feel much like drinking tonight anyways. Roy wandered the city streets for a while, watching the brightly lit signs go by, strip clubs, gambling joints, bars, all of them seemed to think that a bright colorful neon sign would set them apart from the other couple hundred establishments around here.

Sighing Roy leaned against the wall of one of these buildings and pulled out his pack of smokes. A few thugs in black suits walked by and nodded at Roy. He nodded back and pulled out the smoke with his teeth. As they passed by him one of them pulled out a lighter and lit his cigarette for him.

“Thanks.” Roy muttered as he inhaled the smoke. One of the men there smiled at him and responded. “Hey, anything for the new underboss eh. What’s it been like six months maybe? And you’ve already made quite the name for yourself.”

“Thanks.” Roy muttered again as he continued to puff away on the smoke. Noticing Roy’s lack of interest in the conversation the two men left him to smoke alone, with a final “good luck” for their parting words. Roy spat on the ground after they left, he had a bad taste in his mouth. Must be the smoke maybe. He was about to drop the cigarette on the ground when his eyes caught sight of a dark black vehicle with tinted windows rolling down the round slowly. His gaze focused on it, disinterested for the most part, he cocked an eyebrow as the car made a full stop when it reached him. Roy stared at it, his hand making it’s way behind his back and holding on to the weapon he concealed there.

Roy breathed out another puff of smoke, his fingers tightening around the handle of the gun. Then the car started moving again, slowly driving away and turning around the corner. The cigarette dropped out of Roy’s mouth and hit the ground, he stomped it out and started walking the other way. What the hell was that? Roy wondered as he picked up his pace. He closed his eyes for a moment as he breathed deeply. There wasn’t anyone foolish enough to fuck with him was there? His gang had this city under lock and key as far as he knew. The cops? No...too many on payroll to go after an underboss randomly, especially one that kept his head down.

Roy pulled out his phone and made a few calls.

Three of them gathered in Roy’s house, and he poured them drinks. They were loyal men, well they were loyal to money, and Roy offered them more than enough of that to ensure that they stayed loyal. He pushed their glass to each of them and leaned on the counter of his bar. They all looked at expectantly.

One of them spoke “You get the plates.”

Roy nodded. “I imagine their fake.”

Another laughed then gulped down the harsh liquid in one swallow. “I think you overestimate people. Not everyone’s as smart as you. Or as careful.”

Roy closed his eyes and brought his hands together, cracking his knuckles and laying his chin down on his hands. The third man spoke, his voice was soft but cheery. “Well, why don’t we run the numbers and just see what we get? If it works out, then our problems are over, if not we try another angle. I’ll do it myself if you want.” Roy nodded his head and pushed him a piece of paper with the numbers and letters that he had seen on it. The third man took the piece of paper and walked off his drink going untouched.

The first man spoke again. “Don’t know what your scared of to be honest. There’s no one around here dumb enough to fuck with us. If they were then they’re definitely not smart enough to get anywhere.”

The second man spoke in response to him, a wry grin spread across his face. “Nah he ain’t scared. He’s bored, must get lonely at the top I bet.” Roy smiled back, a grin just as depraved, as his. Roy spoke again. “Do you have a problem with that?”

The second man shook his head as he took the third man’s full glass and drank from that. “You know I don’t. Just have my money ready.” When he was finished drinking he stood up and left the room, before he left Roy called out. “Don’t forget to do your job. Or I’ll put a price on your head. You know my rule.” He responded casually as if he’d heard the same line many times before. “Yeah yeah. And you know mine.”

When all that was left was Roy and the first man, he poured himself a drink, and refilled the other’s glass. The man spoke. “He’s right isn’t he, your just bored, that or you're looking to prove something to someone.”

Roy drank a sip of the burning liquid, it went down rough but it got pleasant real quick. “Yep.” The man sighed as he took another drink and pulled out a couple of cigarettes, giving one to Roy and lighting one for himself, saying. “If this is about what I said earlier-” Roy lifted his hand and cut him off as he lit his own cigarette. “This has got nothing to do with that. I’m just trying to keep my head on my shoulders, I didn’t claw my way to the top just to get killed.”

They sat there in silence for a while longer, as they smoked and drank for a few more minutes. Until it was time for the last man to leave, and so with a wave Roy bid him goodbye and sent him on his way. Roy moved to stare out his window, overlooking the city, he pulled the cigarette out of his mouth and dusted it off on an ashtray. He’d thrown quite a bit of money at these thugs for what could have been some small coincidence, but it was true, he was bored.

He hadn’t found a challenge in a long time, he’d risen as far as he wanted to, and the only one who seemed like he would be any kind of challenge was that old man. But after he beat him what then? He’d have to take over his position, and he sure as hell didn’t want to do that. It was a lot of work and for what? More money? As if, he had plenty of that and quite frankly it was a bit overrated. Nice he guessed, top shelf booze, good car, good gun, whatever the hell he wanted.

Roy threw the rest of his smoke into the fireplace and proceeded to put his liquor away. Roy exited his living room and flicked the lights off as he entered the bedroom. He flopped down on to the bed and pulled his gun from his holster, sliding it under his pillow. He threw off his suit jacket on to the floor and dragged a blanket over himself. He closed his eyes and smiled, it had been a long time since he was excited to wake up the next morning.

White packets and crisp green bills exchanged hands, Roy did it at least 30 times a day. He liked to work the streets, and keep an eye on things. A lot of guys at his level considered that beneath them and they were right, it was. But their reluctance to do it was usually what landed them in trouble. Roy only trusted someone else’s eyes so much. Besides you never knew who had an ulterior motive, but what you saw with your own eyes was what you saw. It might be fake, it might be an illusion, but if you wanted to see through it, then you could only do that if you experienced it.

Roy knocked on the hardwood door a few times, he threw another smoke into his mouth and puffed on it as he waited. No answer, Roy spit on the grass and then opened door. He walked in with a bored expression, then he scowled, a foul scent was in the air. He took the smoke out of his mouth and looked for a light switch, it was the middle of the day but this guy had boarded up all of his windows with some shitty plywood. It took a few moments but he finally found it. Next to the door, but a little lower than usual.

He flicked the light switch on and scowled again. The place was a pigsty as usual, discarded food laying everywhere, torn clothing fucking dirt of all things. A few bits and pieces of broken furniture mixed in with everything else. Roy waded through the junk kicking the larger pieces aside, he was getting more and more annoyed by this punk. Finally he made his way to the bedroom and looked inside.

There was a man with a sunken face and thin wiry hair lying in the bed, his mouth was open and his eyes were only half closed. Lying next to him, a pretty girl. Blonde, blue eyed, her cheeks were once rosy he imagined, she was young, she looked like she had been well taken care of. But not anymore, they were both dead.

“Damn it.” Roy muttered as he put the cig back into his mouth. “You always did love to cut in to my profits didn’t you.” Roy stated to no one in particular as he moved forward, he pulled a pair of black leather gloves out of his pocket as he casually turned the man over by the shoulder and went through his back pocket. “Junkies. You make me sick. No self control, no discipline.” Roy pulled the dead man’s wallet out of his back pocket and went through it. He took all the money he had, and the woman’s too. It was more than enough to cover what he’d lost on their last order.

He shoved the bills into his coat pocket and took the gloves off, putting them into his back pocket. This was just great, now he had to find another addict to keep the status quo. That girl would have made a nice addition, if that stupid fuck hadn’t had her overdose. What a piece of shit, Roy was glad he was gone. Even if it did make more trouble for him.

Roy put the cigarette out long before he threw it away, he made sure to go down several streets before he did so. He didn’t want to leave any trace of himself whatsoever. Eventually someone who gave a shit would come into that building and the police would investigate. As he turned down a road, back to his normal route, Roy caught sight of one of his hired guns. He was walking up to him with a smile and waving a folder in front of him. It was the guy that had gone to check out that licence plate number. Roy smirked and approached him, he reached his hand out to accept the folder, but halted when he heard the gunshot.

If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster.
