Mission

“A guy. You got me .. a guy.” The fifteen year old heiress stood glaring at Spike while a tiny dog squirmed in her arms.

“He’s a highly trained esco---“

“I don’t care about how badass he is with a sword, Daddy!” She hissed, “I wanted to have fun and he looks lame and weird.” Looking him up and down with disdain, the buxom girl narrowed her eyes and turned to her father. “Wait. This isn’t a date is it? Because first of all, ew. Secondly-“
The mobster’s cell phone began to vibrate loudly. “I have to take this, muffin. Daddy loves you now go have fun.”

He turned away before she could respond and strode away with his personal assistant power-walking after him. The guard by the private entrance touched his earpiece before approaching the hired protection. “Mr. Labella has a car for you.” Gesturing to the doorway, he stepped back with an air of respect. Seven years ago he himself had taken the Hunter’s exam and washed out in the first hour. Although the rumors of Don Labella buying a Hunter babysitter was scoffed at by much of the staff, Henry knew it was truly a master standing in the foyer.

“Hmph.” The teen lifted her chin and hugged the dog closer.

Henry gestured to the doorway. Should Spike choose to use it, he would enter a private garage with at least two dozen models parked and waiting. Three of them seemed to be specifically lined up apart from the others; as if to say that they were the Hunter's options for the day.

In terms of fulfilling favors to mobsters, bodyguard duty was one of the more tame, or at least less morally dubious, jobs to have offered to you. Unlike a lot of Spike's former employers of high standing, Don Labella hadn't contacted him for anything in quite a while, which was almost a shame really. As crime lords went, he probably the least volatile and definitely most laid back of the bunch when it came to work environments, but was still as brutal and vicious when it came to failure as the rest. Spike obviously never went into a job expecting failure, yet it'd be foolish not to keep the consequences in mind...

Once again, as soon as the hunter had returned home from another incredibly dangerous assignment he received a call to jump back into the fray, with barely a day to rest between them. From the onset, playing bodyguard to Don Labella's daughter sounded like a nightmare and a half on several levels, chiefly among them the fact he knew of her reputation as just a plain terrible human being. Still, there wasn't much Spike could do to get out of this, and he doubted a cushier way to settle his debt would present itself in the future. Besides, he'd always wanted to go to the carnival, work just had a habit of getting in the way every time the season rolled around.

Being essentially an informal mob function, Spike decided to dress the part of a good mafia henchman for the evening; diving into his closet for something appropriate. Ironically, He settled on the black suit and blue tie that matched his beanie, the outfit he'd worn the night he'd first met Ylva; what seemed like an eternity ago. The hunter's mind wandered to his friends and what they were probably up to as he got dressed, hoping their lack of recent phone calls meant they were doing well. Topping his outfit off with a silver tie clip and cuff links, he left his apartment and headed down to the entrance to meet the car waiting for him.

Don Labella was as pleasant as Spike remembered him, giving the temporary bodyguard a warm smile and a hardy handshake when he arrived at the Don's mansion. Sadly, the person he had to protect was as nightmarishly bad as expected when introductions came around. He took the 'Lame' and 'Weird' parts of her verbal assault with a straight face, only raising an eyebrow in confusion when the question arose to whether this was a date or not, and got met with an 'Ew'. Up until he met Dorn, looks had never really been an area where he could say he was particularly gifted, but getting an outright 'Ew' seemed like a slap in the face.

The hunter followed the silent suggestion of the other guard present and exited to the garage. There was no real contest between the three cars set out as his options: they'd take the red one. Silver would've been more low-key, but the red was too inviting to pass up. The only complaint Spike had about all three cars was the lack of a backseat, guaranteeing he and the bulgy brat would be in close quarters for the ride to the carnival. "Well, let's get going." he stated with a warm smile, opening the passenger side door for his ward to enter before adding. "I'm Spike by the way, if your father hadn't told you already."

"It's gonna be a fun night, don't worry."

"It's gonna be a fun night, don't worry."

Elizabeth rolled her eyes. “You can stop flirting now. I’m in a serious relationship.” It took the heiress a bit of effort to seat herself; taking a sparkly seat belt extender out from her tiny handbag and clipping it on before strapping in. She did it as nonchalantly as possible; glancing at Spike and huffing, “Ridiculous foreign cars and their inhuman sizes." Once the Hunter was in the drivers seat, she would begin talking again. “What kind of name is Spike anyway? I mean, if it’s your handle it’s fine I guess but it’s on the shorter side. Just please don’t hint for me to subscribe to your whatever. I’m so past that now. Is that beanie like, your signature look? It’s lame.” The miniature dog sniffed at Spike’s leg and growled. Elizabeth paid it no attention and sighed. “Well anyway I’ve been planning this trip for like, months and I have our schedule on my phone.” The teen paused to smile coyly before taking a selfie, and spent the next two minutes adding filters, stickers, text, and tags before sending it.

The drive was relatively silent as the heiress scrolled through images of anime boys on her phone, hearting some and reblogging most of them. The car gradually filled with a combination of scents: her spicy watermelon body lotion and the dog. Spike would feel it’s curious paws on his pant leg when the girl’s pet familiarized itself with his crotch.

Elsewhere in a dark abandoned warehouse, a gloved hand swiped until Lady Elizabeth’s selfie appeared. The fat brat was an easy target but it appeared her regular entourage wasn’t with her. “Hmmmm..” Something felt off about it, but the mysterious glove-wearer chuckled as they pocketed their phone. ___________________________________________
Shortly after Spike made it to YorkShin’s west side a ferris wheel could be seen in the general direction of Center Park. “THERE IT IS!” Squealed the wealthy girl, forgetting her superiority for a moment. “YORKSHIN CARNIVAL!!! AayeeeEEEEE! All the other stupid fairs suck but this one is bae! OMG the epic park prize that almost nobody ever wins!!! Hurry up! Hurry UP!” The dog was startled by her shrieking, and attempted to hide in Spike’s armpit.

Spike's smile only waned slightly when the uppity brat threw his attempts at being pleasant and reassuring right back in his face. It wasn't even close to the worse verbal attack he'd ever endured, yet stung particularly bad because it seemed like a horrific preview for the night ahead. He could easily take getting yelled at or threatened for a few minutes, then walking out of a client's office to go around the world for something or another, just there was no escape from that being a bodyguard. Well, letting her be killed or kidnapped would do it, but neither were really options.

The hunter did find some satisfaction and enjoyed a brief chuckle over her difficulties getting in their transportation for the evening, but outright frowned when she attacked his name as well as his hat. Spike had to really choke back a few choice barbed words he had for Bitchy Beth here, accidentally gripping the steering wheel hard enough to warp the shape slightly before catching himself. He considered it almost a blessing when she decided to stay silent after he started the car then sped them away from the compound. Unfortunately, her overly friendly dog didn't exactly make the drive particularly pleasant either.

Shortly into the journey Spike's mental state shifted back into a more mellow haze, akin to how he'd spent most nights as a cabby; just enjoying the sights and experiences. His ward's sudden outburst both made him jump and broke the illusion that he wasn't babysitting that night. Oddly enough, Spike felt rather empathetic towards the dog, having to deal with this nonsense day in and day out. Admittedly, the staff at the Labella mansion must've had it a hundred times worse than this overgrown rat. He had to wonder if she berated their names and fashion sense as well.

After bringing the car to a stop in a parking spot near the front, Spike hopped out and quickly ran over to the passenger side to open the door for Beth. "Watch you step, miss." he remarked, still putting on the professional charm, and extending a steadying hand out if she needed the extra help hauling herself up from the seat. "Since you have everything planned out already, I'll follow your lead. Just stay close."

Spike’s polite tone and waiting hand took her off guard. Normally, her escort would have settled into a sulky silence by now, or have a hardened, stoic expression with a hint of inner rage. His hand wasn’t so terrible and it seemed as though it was effortless to help her up. Elizabeth had gotten accustomed to the hidden struggles of her entourage and always with the averted eyes. Yes she was fat, so what? Why did they feel the need to look away as if it were contagious or something?

“Since you have everything planned out already, I'll follow your lead. Just stay close."

Lady Elizabeth snapped back to present and navigated to the Yorkshin Carnival VIP app. “Ok. First thing we need to do it check in at the Fair Insider lounge.” A girlish, excited noise escaped the heiress while she scrolled through a list of elite privileges. The two would arrive without any difficulty and were greeted by a beautiful woman in designer clothes. “Welcome. Lady Elizabeth we are so pleased to see you. How are you today?”

“Ready to hit this carnival so hard and win that mega prize!”

“That’s what we like to hear! This must be your escort. If you could step over here Sir, our security officer will do a brief check.” A bright smile. The wealthy teen snickered. Lady Elizabeth was anxious to get started however, and she would gesture for Spike to hurry up once things had been settled.

“Rollarcoaster time!” She said breathlessly, already she was winded from all of the walking. She dismissed the VIP greeter’s causal mention of the motorized handicap scooters and insisted on getting around without assistance. It took thirty minutes for them to reach the rollercoaster. Even though was the carnival’s only rollercoaster, it featured a single metal bar allowing the seats to horizontally spin 360 degrees backwards and forwards independent of the train’s magnetic motors. “The Screaming Hawk reaches up to eighty miles an hour with it’s overbanks turns and freaky inversions!” Lady Elizabeth babbled while huffing and puffing towards the shorter line reserved for VIPs. “A one hundred and fifty drop at eighty degrees sure to thrill riders and pressure-timed flame throwers every six seconds.”

“Yes, hello there! You’ll be riding in our premiere seats today.” The ride usher started to guide the oversized teen to a special chair but stopped at the girl’s sharp refusal.

“No thanks.” Elizabeth spat with fake cheerfulness. “I’ll be sitting in the regular seats.”

And so it was. Spike was strapped in with the obese maiden with barely no space of his own whatsoever; her body mass lumping over onto him in the small harnessed chair.

It was a pleasant surprise to not have his kindness thrown back into his face with contempt after Spike helped the client, but didn't have high hopes that things would stay this civil. Still, it was a start. Despite her lumbering state due to ponderous weight, he was able to move her about like it was nothing with just his strength. The only complaint he really had about her massive frame overall was that while walking a few steps behind and to the right of her, she took up a sizable chunk of his vision, leaving him with a helluva blindspot if something went wrong. He also couldn't effectively jump in front of her to potentially take a bullet, given she seemed nearly twice his size from this distance, leaving plenty of prime real-state for a sniper to take advantage of.

The hunter nodded and flashed the beautiful hostess a smile when they arrived at the lounge, only fading slightly after being told he was about to be searched. Strictly speaking, he didn't have anything work hiding, but he lacked the knowledge whether security would be confiscating his pistol or not. York Shin City was a filthy, crime infested hell hole, so it was rare to find a citizen who wasn't armed to some degree or another. However, if the mafia ultimate ran the show he could see equal odds on either keeping his piece or having it taken while they were inside.

The latter seemed set to happen after the guard's detector wand went off, and a quick pat down confirmed Spike had a pistol, except a flash of his license seemed sufficient to prove he was the trustworthy sort. The hunter made a mental note of the fact Elizabeth seemed set on winning the mega prize, wordlessly agreeing to help with the endeavor if it'd keep her off his back. Unfortunately, visiting the roller coaster was the first stop on the plans for the evening.

Spike hated roller coasters on a fundamental level, mostly on the grounds that they always reminded him of this fiery airship crash he'd survived en-route to Dolle's Port a few years back. Rivals of the crime family he was smuggling for at the time shot it down with a missile, sending the craft plummeting like a rock. The fact this roller coaster had flamethrowers of all things integrated into the experience certainly didn't alleviate any anxiety over any of this. He remained quiet during the trek over to the towering ride, hoping deep down that his ward would reconsider her choice.

The hunter remained stoic after they finally arrived, only shivering slightly when Elizabeth decided to go with standard seating arrangements. Honestly, one would think the attendant would say something about someone of her size in a seat meant for another person who probably weighted less than her breakfast buffet that morning. Spike could honestly see them letting this travesty come to pass, if only to laugh at the poor bastard who was struggling not to drown against the mound of flab next to him.

Thoughts of another job helped to ease the pain somewhat, because this still wasn't nearly as bad as that time he had to share a speedboat with a horned sloth for nearly a day. At least this time around he wasn't ankle-deep in shit and fleas. Only time would tell if the structurally dubious ride would be able to withstand the assault from Elizabeth. Either way, he'd bury himself in her meaty side before impact if things went horribly wrong, and only hope it'd absorb the impact to a large degree.

Just as the operator finished performing all the routine checks and got the go ahead to start the ride from the ushers, a cloth soaked in chloroform was held over his mouth by a gloved hand. The carnival worker went limp immediately and was gently guided to the ground before being rolled away from the roller coaster controls. Not long after Spike and his client were harnessed in, the Screaming Hawk began to move. Strange, frantic banjo music accompanied the violent acceleration just after they turned a corner, and Lady Elizabeth screamed. It wasn’t a happy scream. It was shrill and terrified. Panicked. Animalistic. A Screaming Hawk scream.

If her arms weren’t hindered by the seat’s thick padded harness, the teen would have held her bodyguard for dear life. Instead, she flailed in her attempts to do so, the back of her hand coming into contact with his face if Spike’s reaction was slow enough. An urgent buzzing sound filled the air as the rollercoaster’s speed passed the safe limits, and dozens of workers turned their gaze the Screaming Hawk. It was the first time that ride ever had an emergency. Balloons were let go of and ice-creams were dropped as parents and children stared in wonder at the Screaming Hawk’s flame throwers; all of which were engaged. Even the animals in the petting zoo seemed to sense danger and moved to huddle in small groups. Teenage shrieks and intense banjo continued as the cars came to an unnatural halt. Before anyone could rush to unfasten the passangers, the cars slid back down one of the steeper inclines. At the bottom was a flame thrower in full effect. Unless something happened, every single one of the riders would be scorched to death.
