Elora sat along one of the silver trimmed tables, carefully eating her plate of truffles. She had thought for a moment that the place was a luxurious restaurant, but just the sight of the other tables full of well-dressed mafia in white suits have cleared her stray thoughts away. Chantings of monks over the dead silence, her own white collar, and lastly a photo of her friend embraided around chrysanthemum flowers. It was a wake on her good friend from the University.

A bald, plump man in white suit took a seat along the table. A scar was drawn across his cheeks, right towards the edge of his wrinkles. One of the Mafia leader, and her late friend's father. He had explained to Elora on how his daughter died, calmly & boldly as expected of a mafia head, but she'd thought she heard a few solemn tones despite. It turns out that her friend was killed by Tarfiv of the mafia, who betrayed their gang.

Words travel fast, especially in a silent place like a funeral. Twitching her ears, she could easily overhear from the chatters of the other members, that they think that its the work of their rival gang. It seemed to her that they were about to go on a full out struggle against that clan, once the funeral ends.

Seven days... Elora doesn't need to know what would happen if a gang dukes out with another, most of the times it always lead to a mess. It turns out that Tarfiv has also killed a police officer and gotten himself a bounty. She resolved to get to the bottom of this, and have her good friend rest in peace.

She exited the funeral after giving her condolences, and pondered how can a person survive with the pursuit of both the bright and dark side of the law. She headed for the local police post, hoping to get information on the guy named Tarfiv.

Jake yawned and covered her mouth while at it. She was trying to solve a rubix cube while she waits for her name to be called at the York Shin City Police Department. She was there because she heard a friend of a friend say that the police had their hands quite full lately with some mafia crimes that they were even willing to hire Hunter aspirants as long as a Hunter would vouch for them. It was a good thing Jake knew how to make friends in high places. She owed Zaven and Joules one. But knowing them, they’d probably brush it off while telling Jake to get her own license. Well, she was planning to get it but it was harder than she first thought it would be.

Jake bolted upright when she finally heard her name called. A man of about his early thirties by Jakes estimation motioned her to follow him. She quickly stuffed the cube into her pack and followed suit straight into a small office that was mostly occupied by piles upon piles of folders and files. The man indicated she take her seat but to Jake’s puzzlement, she wondered where. When the man took his own seat at the other end of the desk, she decided to move some papers from the seat directly opposite him and gingerly laid them on the pile between them.

“Sorry about the mess. You’ve probably heard about how busy we are lately.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard a bit.” Jake responded, eyeing the file in front of her. The officer tucked the askew papers into its folder.

“I am Detective Gram Rush and if you haven’t figured it out, I’m Zaven and Joules’ older brother.”

"I’m Jake,” she extends her hand for a shake. “Well, originally Jessica but people mostly know me as Jake.” Detective Rush gives her a firm squeeze. “It’s a pleasure, detective. Your brother and sister are such good people.”

“…and I hear some great things about you, myself.” He replied, sitting back in his chair, tenting his fingers. “I hear you’ve got some skill with the swords. We could use a fighter like you. Also, someone not directly linked with the police department.” Here he leaned closer to her. “To be honest, we need someone unknown to the mafia to investigate a certain death.” Here he tosses her a file folder that he picked up from the pile beside him. Jake opens it to find a picture of a young girl, probably in her early twenties. “I’d like you to investigate her death. We’ve got a suspect but no concrete evidence to tie it all together. If you turn to the next page…” here Jake finds another picture, this time that of a man. “… the guy is only known as Tarfiv of the mafia. He’s who we think is the perp.” And he pauses to see if Jake has any questions.

“So I’m dealing with the mafia, eh? I dunno if I want to be tangled up with such a complicated business but…”

Here the detective hands her a slip of paper.

Jake whistles. “That’s a lot of zeroes”.

“Pretty standard for outsourced hands. Would be larger if you had a license.”

Both of Jake’s eyebrows rise in disbelief at the sum. “Looks like I’m headed to the Hunter Association after this gig, then.” She hands the piece of paper back to the detective.

“Keep it. To remind you of what this is worth. You can take the file as well. My contact information is there. Anything else you wanna ask?”

Jake gets up and gives him a salute. “I’ll be in contact soon, sir.”

Elora approaches the police station, no smell of criminal activities as far as she would have concern of. After all, the police post would be the last place that guy Tarfiv would go to on his own accord. And speaking of Tarfiv, Elora turned to look at notice board, tiptoeing to have a proper view of the wanted poster. A white haired man with neatly cropped hair, and piercing grey eyes of those kind that would kill without any remorse. There's nothing else that she'd find him unique, just a regular long scar across his cheek, just like one of those villagers that she would've seen everyday back in her hometown.

Sitting cross-legged near the reception, the corner of her eye caught sight of a perculiar girl with documents. She doesn't have a formal uniform, nor does she have any resemblance of a police agent. A thief catcher? Elora isn't sure of the equivalent term for people who tracks down thieves in the streets. York Shin City was a perculiar place for her, she found it difficult to understand why the mafia would rather kill than to capture them to the authorities.

"Hey, do you happen know anything about Tarfiv?" Elora asked Jake, who seemed more approachable than those in uniform.

Jake was striding out of the police station to begin her investigation of this Tarfiv guy when suddenly, a girl came out of nowhere asking her about, by random luck, her target, Tarfiv. Jake was surprised. She looked left and right as if some conspiracy was unfolding. She also wondered whether maybe some police officer let their kid lose and any moment some worried police mom will come over and claim her. No such luck. Come to think of it, upon closer inspection, the girl was just short but was in her teens. Was this some sort of wannabee teen detective? Watched too much Conan, Jake guessed.

The hired hand bent down to match the girl’s height. She put her arm around her shoulder and talked all sweet like. “Listen, honey. Nice girls like you aught to go home and do their homework instead of talking to random strangers. And that name you mentioned is not a name you should just be speaking to just about anyone. So why don’t you…” fixing her scarf and coat tighter, “…scurry on home for dinner?” Jake ended with a well-meaning smile. With a last pat to her head, Jake stood up straight, grabbed her backpack from the nearby bench, slinged it unto her back, and strode off into the night.

"He killed my friend." Elora made an unfettered look at Jake, leaving the Police Station without any further questions to the 'thief catcher' .

She had a better idea on where to find next, the rival gang: The Alcide Triads. At least they'll have a better clue on the situation once she approaches them.

Walking into the alley alone, she donned on her brown cloak, blending into the shade of the night. Stringing up her bow, she walked towards the territory of the Alcides as she stumbled upon a man in dark glasses, who was leaning on his back with a lit cigar, "Leave, this isn't a place for kids like you."

"I would want to meet your boss, gruffian of the Alcides," Elora snorted, with a smirk at the sight of the mafia guy showing an unpleased expression.

An arrow jammed the pistol at the moment it was drawn out. "I don't take a no for an answer, heh, it seems like your men are as unruly as the rumours say."

She prepared to nock her arrows as she can see reinforcements coming from miles away.

---

In another alley, a man sat on a chair of limbs, The walls of the alleys are splashes of blood over dull & fresh colour. Corpses of police and the mafia lay around the red puddles. One corpse seemed to be blown into pieces without any traces of burns unlike a normal explosion would do. Some laid along with stab wounds, and strong bite mark.

A music was played from a silver horn with golden rims, the white haired man playing as though the dead people are listening attentively to his song. "A city of unruliness, yet they do not admire the Song of the Dreams." Tarfiv put down his blood drenched after the last performance for his 'sleepy audiences'

Jake was right with her feeling. It told her that leaving the girl alone like that was a mistake. It was never a good thing to leave the desperately grieving alone. They were prone to doing all sorts of irresponsible and irrational stunts and apparently this girl was the worse of them.

A minute after she left the police headquarters, the girl’s voice echoed in her head. “He killed my friend” it said over and over. And her conscience bothered her enough to get her to turn around and sprint back to the station just in time to see the girl disappear around the corner. She caught a glimpse of the desperate and determined look in her eyes. “Wait!” Jake had shouted even if she knew that the city noise would probably drown her out. She sprinted behind her following as best she could. Once or twice she knocked some people by accident but she hurried on with a quick apology to the victims. She once again diverted her attention back to the chase but by that time, she had lost her.

“Mother in heaven…” she uttered like a curse. “Now where is she?” she looked around furiously for the girl but could not find her. She did however, recognize where the chase had led her. She uttered another curse under her breath. It was the Alcide Triads’ territory. This cannot be good. She hoped that her gut feeling was wrong this time. A teenager was not suicidal enough to go head first into a mafia gang’s headquarters. No way.

Just as a precaution, Jake took out her phone and called the number she had just received that evening. The other line rang for a while but went straight to voice mail. Shit. Police officers and their paperwork! Jake instead left a hurried message as she briskly walked through the streets headed straight for the Alcide HQ. “Detective Rush, this is Jake. We got a problem. Requesting that you send reinforcements to the Alcide Triads’ headquarters as fast as you can. This is an emergency.” Then she shut off her phone and walked even faster.

Jake turned the last corner to the headquarters and spotted what she hoped was only a nightmare. There was the girl, outfitted in a brown cloak, and sporting a bow and arrow like a vengeful robin hood. She had her arrow trained at a man in glasses. Behind him, he comrades were taking out their own weapons and coming to his rescue.

“Sweet lord!” Jake cursed once more and took out her bolos ready to join the fray.
