Spike accepted the return of his sidearm with a smile and had it back in its holster in one smooth action. He took Sable hobbling to her feet on her own as a nonverbal refusal of his assistance; although, he nearly moved to her side to help make the walk a little easier. For the sake of her pride, he decided to hold off on doing something that presumptuous, instead just keeping himself available if she reached out for aid. The hunter paused after Sable gestured for him to lead the way, turning and jogging in the opposite direction towards one of the instrument panels.

"Other than timed explosives, which we don't have, we one have one option for destroying this airship far enough away from the town not to draw undue attention; dump the fuel and let it crash on its own." he explained while his fingers hovered over the multitude of switches and buttons, finally coming to a stop over one of the former. Besides a little blinking red light above the switch engaging after toggled it, there was otherwise no other indication that the craft was now sprinkling gasoline down on the forest below in vast quantities.

Spike declined to even try giving Sable an estimation on when the airship would eventually stall and crash as they walked along the corridor, simply because he couldn't give her an accurate answer even if he tried. Finding out the fuel tank's capacity and rate of discharge was doable, just completely irrelevant to the next stage of the plan. Speaking of which, the hunter went to a panel along the wall once he reentered the cargo bay and hit a stereotypical big red button. The rapidly slanting floor, loud roar of gears moving tons of steel, and the sudden addition of arctic air rushing in made it clear what was happening.

"Alright, I'm gonna handle most of this jump, but I'm still gonna need your help. Once we hit the air, count to thirty, then pull the cords on the parachutes near you. If we're tumbling end over end, at least wait until we're upright to pop your chutes, or we're not gonna have a soft landing." Spike instructed as he settled into the driver's seat, raising his voice to be heard above the commotion going on around them. He'd already removed the webbing holding the vehicle in place, so if not for the parking brake it likely would've slid towards the bay's maw like several of the smaller containers around them.

The hunter fired up the engine after a final check of his safety belt, and a quick glance over to check on Sable, easing off the parking brake and accelerating them towards the opening at a leisurely pace. He kept his eyes fixated on his watch instead of the long drop awaiting them, only gunning the accelerator once his earlier countdown reached zero. "Here we go..." was the extra verbal warning Sable would get to brace herself before the pair went from teetering on the edge to free-falling with the grace and coordination of a brick.

If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster.

Spike's plan for the airship to crash and burn was a reasonable one. Or at least, it seemed that way to Sable at the moment. She wasn't in much of a position to debate strategy, and Spike had apparently already made the decision. His strategy of driving out into freefall, was a bit sketchier than she'd anticipated. But, and she was already tired of realizing this, she didn't have much of a choice. Glancing behind her at the two parachutes rigged to the back end, Sable gave a thumbs up in response to Spike's instructions. That much she could handle...hopefully.

She quickly snapped her own safety belt on, tightening it pretty tight, but leaving a little bit of wiggle room. Flashing a thumbs up to Spike, the assassin grabbed onto the seat in front of her, and watched as they inched toward the open ramp. The wind was howling into the cargo bay, and their height above the ground made her dizzy just looking, though her ribs certainly weren't doing her any favors either. Ironically, the higher they were, the greater their chances of surviving this plan - the plan Sable's foggy mind was just now realizing was more than a little crazy. But, she didn't have time to argue as they tipped over the edge, and started tumbling through the air.

The freezing air bit at her face as they tumbled, the airship continuing on overhead. The world inverted so many times Sable wasn't sure which way was up anymore, yet her seatbelt kept her in place. Slowly, she inched her arms back towards the parachutes, waiting for that moment in which they were upright and relatively stable. Grasping the ripcords, she held herself in place in the tumbling hunk of metal, until the tumbling ceased for a brief moment. Her head was spinning like a top, and she felt as if she might simply fly out of the vehicle, but some instinct drove her arms to move. Her ribs cracking further, Sable yanked the ripcords simultaneously, with two parachutes blossoming out above them, before falling backwards, out of strength, coughing blood all over the back seat. Her vision dimmed to black, and she couldn't even spare the hope that Spike would activate his parachutes instead of leaving her inside the vehicle before she passed out her body going limp.

Before the vehicle even did its first somersault, Spike had serenely closed his eyes and held onto the steering wheel, just looking to enjoy the free-fall for the next twenty seconds or so. Last time he'd done this it had been over the ocean on a night much like this one, yet this latest jump was unsurprisingly quite similar. The air he'd fallen through during the former was obviously much warmer than what they were experiencing at the moment, but the familiar sensation of speeding through the air like a frigid meteor was a pleasant one.

The hunter opened his eyes on the count of twenty like he'd planned, easily spotting the faint lights marking the small community they were aiming for among the towering snow-capped pines. It suddenly occurred to him that there was another huge downside of trying to land a vehicle like this from the air; uneven terrain upon impact. Never mind whether they could slow enough for it not to explode the moment they hit the ground, the crash itself could easily do them in. Still, he didn't allow himself to panic over this newfound danger, nor attempt yelling his discovery to Sable over their howling descent.

Despite his earlier instructions, Spike's own parachutes would engage on the count of about 30.2, causing the UTV to lurk to one said for a harrowing fraction of a second. It was during this shift to his side that he noticed that Sable seemed to have passed out, just going by her limp thrashing against gravity. Thankfully for the pair, his gamble about the four parachutes seemed to have paid off, and the vehicle's plummet slowed considerable down from what it had been. Now their only worry was if they could stick the landing. If he screwed this up, he doubted Sable would ever awaken again.

Using the adjustment pulleys on his pair of chutes the hunter could control their direction of descent somewhat, so it really came down to taking their chances with the ground or attempting to get tangled in one of the innumerable pine trees around them, and just hope it held their weight. Interestingly, a third option presented itself that he hadn't considered; a river that snaked its way through the forest, partially running past the town in fact. He'd noticed the reflection of the steadily advancing airship across a thin strip of the ground and didn't realize the cause for moment.

Finding it the best chance they had of survival, Spike worked the pulleys and aimed them straight for a bend in the silver streak cutting a path through the trees. Dread began to form as they drew closer and the waters below gained clarity, revealing a speed a hair below rapids and breaks among the white-capped waves that could've been rocks just barely beneath the surface. The hunter closed his eyes in the dwindling seconds before they finally touched down, mentally preparing himself for a violent death, similar to every other time he left the house.

Their landing kicked up a massive spray of freezing water as the vessel made contact with the surface, hitting both passengers with considerable force, before rapidly beginning to sink beneath the ebony torrents around them. Spike had his restraints undone before the icy waters engulfed his body up to the waist, but didn't manage to do the same to Sable as their heads dipped below the surface. The level of discomfort from being surrounded by an unpleasant environment meant was almost too much to bare, and the hunter had to fight his instinct to flee in order to give his partner the assistance she needed.

Once freed, he wrapped an arm around her waist and kicked off the UTV for the surface, just as the vehicle thunked to a stop on the river bed. The pair would get the chance for a fresh lungful of air shortly; although, at least for Spike the intake was a bit hampered by how hard his teeth were chattering. Holding her by her coat's scruff, he waded through the water with Sable in tow until it was shallow enough to drag her onto the embankment properly. Shaking violently, Spike began strip out of his clothes a layer at a time, tossing them into the river like flotsam. Soaking wet they'd definitely do more harm than good under the circumstances.

If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster.

The huge spray of freezing water caused Sable's eyes to snap open, shocked into awakening. The painkillers were finally starting to kick in, turning her chest from a sharp, burning pain into a slightly duller throb, but they did nothing for the sensation of subzero water soaking through her heavy clothes. Ironically, that which she had donned to keep her warm was now freezing her to death. Her arms flailed, and she managed to undo her seatbelt just before the water covered her head. One breath was all she had time for - as deep as her broken ribs would allow - before she was submerged completely.

The shock nearly caused her to gasp out her last precious bit of oxygen, but she held it in just barely. But any attempt to move was stifled by her soaked clothes, and the chill that drained any last flickers of strength from her body. She was only able to watch, trapped inside the UTV, as the light of the surface drew further and further. Maybe this was it. She could hardly expect Spike to come save her in this situation. And even if he could, she didn't want to be indebted to him. Yet, even as she thought it, and her eyes were drifting shut, she felt someone's hands wrap around her waist, and start hauling her back up. Black spots had appeared in her vision, and she suffocated as, with her last ounce of willpower, refused to suck in any water.

Her head broke the surface, and she gasped, drawing in huge amounts of oxygen, tears leaking from her eyes as her chest seemed to crack with each breath. Yet she couldn't stop herself. She hung onto Spike as he dragged them through the shallows, and she couldn't help but glance over at the professional who should've left her behind to die long ago. Even if he played the part of a crisp and remorseless contract criminal, the illusion was shattered. She wasn't worth this amount of trouble. Her oxygen starved brain had no room to deduce his morals, and thus settled on the simple conclusion that they were better than her own, though that wasn't saying much.

They finally reached the shore, and Spike immediately began to strip out of his sopping clothes. Sable knew that she had to do this too. Yet, the freezing water had apparently drained all of her strength. Falling to her knees, she reached a single shaking arm up to her coat, grasping the zipper. Every so slowly, the teeth parted, until the whole garment was finally undone, revealing the black turtleneck underneath. Yet, she couldn't muster the strength to reach around and pull it off. Falling forward, Sable felt her heartbeat. It was slower than normal. Strange. Sliding her eye over to her hand, she saw that her Ten was faint and rough.

Ah.
I see.
Is this what dying is like?

In the rush to get every piece of drenched fabric off of himself, Spike nearly tossed the backpack containing the package into the river as well; pausing in part due to Sable's collapse, only realizing the averted blunder a moment later. Setting the bag aside, he redoubled his efforts and had himself down to his thermal boxers within a minute. He paused again just long enough to stuff his wallet into the backpack before walking over to help the obviously struggling Sable with the same process.

"Just hold still, I got you." the hunter stated with as much reassurance as he could muster, noting humorously to himself this was the least sexy time he'd ever helped a woman undress, while gingerly letting Sable slip out of her coat. Trying to balance expedience, not upsetting her injuries and hopefully keeping her dignity as intact in possible, he assisted his partner discard her drenched clothes, paying extra care to make sure he only snagged her pants as he bared her legs. Still, he had to appreciate she went for the same perfect balance of style versus comfort with her undergarments as he did.

With them both reduced down to their base level of clothing, Spike secured the backpack to himself, then smoothly scooped Sable up into his arms princess style against his chest, not wanting to damage her ribs any further with an alternative hold. "Just gotta hold on a bit longer. Don't go dying on me now. We've come too far." he muttered under his breath, while scanning the treeline to get his bearings. They couldn't afford to get turned around so close to their goal.

The hunter ended this brief deliberation by sprinting into the forest as fast as he could, with a passenger in his arms anyway, really feeling his own body temperature dropping between the frigid breeze against his scarred skin and the snow underfoot. A generous use of Gyo was enough to protect his feet from the odd rock or root under the white powder, but the cold itself was another matter entirely. Their trek was made in near total darkness under the canopy of the monolithic pine trees, yet nothing beyond a few fallen trees and inconvenient boulders slowed Spike's drive towards the town.

Ironically, for as well as he carried Sable through the forest, he almost dropped her the second they came in contact with civilization. Things went dense foliage to a tall wooden fence in a near instance, leaving an incredibly small window to react in. Spike instinctively jumped up and cleared the fence by nearly ten feet, thanks to the higher concentration of Nen in his feet, coming down in a back alley behind a burger joint by the greasy aroma in the air and reek of spoiled beef wafting from the trashcans.

The hunter speed down the alley and out to the front side of the restaurant, ignoring the puzzled looks he got from the confused locals waiting in line or pausing their meals, as he spun around looking for a sign of the hospital. Spike showed the same disregard for incidental spectators when he dashed out into traffic, eliciting several loud blares of horns and several uncalled-for obscene comments toward him and his "fucking bitch". Back on the sidewalk, he sidestepped a few folks who were either too busy with their phones or too drunk to notice two half-naked people barreling down on them.

This last leg of the race to save Sable took them across a dinner parking lot, through a crowd of confused parishioners getting out from a late service, a fire station and an adult novelty store before finally vaulting over a hedge row into the hospital's parking lot. Their hurried entrance received a startled scream from the nurse working the desk, but thankfully she didn't bolt for security after seeing a blood splattered woman in a stranger's arms.

"Hey, we need some help here! We were trying to "spice things up tonight", and went to do something in the kitchen for once. It went horribly wrong. Please, hurry up, she's dying!"

If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster.

"Just hold still, I got you." The words floated into her mind, and she would've chuckled if not for her injuries. She couldn't move even if she wanted to, with her lead limbs. She remained limp as her coat slid off, and bared no reaction as Spike discarded the rest of her clothes, until she was left only in her underwear and bra, and the sodden bandages wrapped around her left arm up to the shoulder. Any thoughts of modesty or embarrassment were the furthest thing from her mind. She was barely conscious as it was. Much like a dream, her mind felt disconnected from her body, like an outside observer.

She felt Spike scoop her up and start running, each step sending a shockwave through her body. Limp in his arms, she was barely breathing. Yet, what little freedom of mind Sable had left began to wander. Away from their current situation, as the pounding of Spike's feet became rhythmic, comforting. She wasn't here. She was...somewhere else. Somewhere...warm?

"Honey, you can't eat all the batter at once!" The voice seemed to be an echo, just barely audible. Who...? She was floating, floating away from her body towards the voice. "We set the oven, and put them in. I promise, they'll be even tastier when they come out." Her eyes cracked open, spotting the starry sky above, and she tried to reach out a hand to grasp the unknown voice. All she managed was a twitch of her fingers. A wave of fatigue washed over her, and her eyes drooped shut, but she forced them back open. I won't go. Not yet. Her breath was shallow and slow, and she barely noticed as they soared through the air, over the fence. Just now, at this moment, Spike's earlier words reached her brain. "We've come too far."

Spike was yelling, that was all she could tell. That, and it seemed a bit brighter than earlier. Fluorescent lights burned down in the inside of a hospital. Suddenly, she wasn't in Spike's arms. She was laying down on something. A gurney? She could feel the vibrations as the wheels rolled over the floor, transporting her to the ER. A glimpse of Spike, in nothing but his underwear as he got further and further from her at the end of the hallway. Come to think of it, she was almost naked as well. Had Spike carried her all that way like that? The ER doors slammed open, and Spike disappeared from her sight. Perhaps she'd be able to thank him when this was all over. It would be discourteous to make all his effort to save her for nothing. In her last act before falling unconscious, she from her flickering Ten into Zetsu subconsciously, so as to allow for surgery to take place. In the outside hallway, a red 'Operating' light flickered on above the doors to the ER.

...light. Sunlight. It was a red glow through the flesh of her eyelids. There was also something tickling her face. Letting out a mix of a sigh and groan, Sable slowly opened her leaden lids, her amber irises scanning the room with the languor of a sloth. It was...a hospital room. The blinds were drawn back, and morning sunlight entered through the window. A ball of fire lighting up the sparse, white room. An IV drip was attached to her right arm, and she was reclined in a bed, covered in a hospital gown. There were areas in her vision which were black and blurred that she didn't understand at first. Moving her head, she felt the stiff muscles protest, and the tickling sensation intensified. A small ray of understanding dawned on Sable as she wished she had the strength to brush her bangs out of her face. Every breath was painful, but not nearly on the same level as the previous day. Glancing to her right, her eyes alighted on Spike, who was sitting in a chair near the door. He was awake, probably through the entire night. She shifted ever so slightly in the bed, feeling tight bandages wreathed around her chest area underneath the gown. "Thank...you." Her voice wasn't more than a croak, in desperate need of water. All of that got pushed to the back of her mind as she felt the blankets sliding over her left arm.

Left Arm

Thump. Her heartbeat sped up, and the monitor started beeping right along with it. Turning her head to the left, her gaze settled on her left arm, completely free of any sort of protection. Black tattoos wreathed the arm from fingertip to shoulder, as dark as midnight, taking up half of the available skin. The tattooed areas seemed to absorb light, and felt completely different from her skin by touch. They were burning hot, and slightly sticky. As she looked upon it, she felt a calm acceptance of her situation. The marks grew slightly cooler, and Sable looked back at Spike, an expression of mixed parts gratitude and apology written on her face. "I'll...explain."

Kudos to both of you for making use of Mount Miera’s briefing throughout. With few exceptions the plot was moving continuously, sorta adding to its already intense feels. It would have been cool to have a gore warning on this thread. Thread was well thought out and unrelenting. Killer combo pretty much. It was nice to see each of you take the lead. The details never stopped, descriptions were vivid, and holy shit your characters. The journey was so well-crafted and it’s hard to say which was better; the intense adventure itself or the relationship that came into being. I guess they were too intermeshed to judge as such. Good for you guys! Hooray! Hooray!

I actually loved post #11. It’s so clean and crisp. I love the details and style so much. I wish I could explain what I love about it better haha. The use of apes was delightful throughout and gave the thread’s location a valid feel. (This is one of your strengths and I’ve noticed it in other threads; placing value on surroundings + conditions giving Spike substantial material to justify his choices and perceptions.)

it was awkward for me to buy Spike’s commitment to Sable’s health while killing a dozen people in addition to his expressed dislike for assassin folks. This sentiment was echoed by Sable herself in post #38 much to my relief. Spike and Sable seemed to have their path however, and it looks like there’s more to come.

"Thankfully, Nen made being superhuman relatively easy."

I need to mention your elegant rhythm and how it applies to all of your characters while still giving each of them a distinct feel. Who are you teach me how to write. ScorpianBoi you excel at describing physicality . Posts #14, 16, 30 being some of my favorites. I had to google “brusque”. You little shit.. Oh and Sable’s “relevant techniques” are terrifying. Posting diminished stats was so great I intend to copy that.
