The streets of York Shin City had turned a stale gray as the frigid temperatures cast a somber haze across the frosted streets. Where there was often jostling crowds moving down the sidewalks, there were now drab colored huddled ghosts, briskly sweeping to their destinations. Striding among them, Luca pulled his fur lined hood tighter around his head, the bulk of his jacket adding false size to the pirate’s slim frame. Stepping off the sidewalk and hoping over a pool of grimy partially frozen water, Luca raised his hand lazily to stop approaching traffic as he crossed the street. Approaching his destination, Luca pushed through the nearly ancient heavy door. As the shimmering wave of warmth, smoke, and stale beer washed past him, Luca let out a shiver he had been suppressing since stepping into the tundra outside.

The Silver Lady, very possibly Luca’s favorite place in York Shin City. Not only was it nearly hidden thanks to the lack of a real sign outside of its doors, but it also was one of the few bars in the city that still allowed smoking indoors. Most importantly however, no one seemed to care who you were. Populated almost entirely by the jilted and jaded, the patrons were all more interested in finding the bottom of their own cups than anything others had to say, so much so that fights rarely broke out inside The Silver Lady’s walls.

Rubbing his hands together to try to push some warmth into them, Luca pushed back his hood, and lit a cigarette as he cut a focused line to the bar. ”Well whiskey ‘n’ yer cheapest beer,” Luca signaled the well-worn female bartender, tapping a bill on the bar.

The usually vain Geanna did not feel like a fashionista that day in a simple t-shirt, scarf, faded jeans, and knee-length boots covered by a long coat. She was still shook up about running into her uncle the day before. Meeting him reminded her of how alone she currently was. The constant moving around has left her with no friends and it’s been years since she last saw her sister. From what she gathered by what Arminius said, its been years since ANYONE has heard from Aleanna. She fears she could already be dead. But she would know, wouldn’t she? She’d feel it somehow if her bond with her triplet was broken. Could she have missed it? Her eyes began to water at the possibility. She wiped them with one gloved hand.

As if to comfort her, the tattoo in her side began to warm. She placed a hand over it and patted the one place where her brother’s soul was connected with her. “Thank you, brother.” She whispered to him but in her mind she was less than comforted. The gesture was appreciated though. Having him there with her all the time was great but having someone with a face and a warm hand was what she was yearning for right now.

The young summoner aimlessly navigated the streets of York Shin City. Scores of people passing her by in her less than enthusiastic pace. Truth be told, she didn’t feel like leaving her bed that morning but she knew if she didn’t she might slip into dangerous ruminations. At least getting some sunshine would do her some good. Good ‘ol vitamin D to boost her health. She arrived at a sunny spot on the sidewalk and stopped, closed her eyes, and directed her face towards the sun, enjoying the warmth that it brought. She took a deep breath and sighed. Then a man in business attire bumped into her.

“get a move on!” he yelled.
“Sorry!” she yelled back and started her morose pace once again.
Then a door opened in front of her, a wave of chatter disturbed her reflections and she looked up to see a sign that said The Silver Lady.

“A bar, eh?” she thought. Then shrugging, “Why not? It’s not like I have someplace important I had to be.”

She opened the door and walked over to the bar, sat on the first stool she came close to and signaled the bartender for a drink.

Luca put down his tall can of beer in favor of the glass of cheap brown liquor was placed before him. Taking a drag of his cigarette, Luca tossed back his head, finishing the glass in one swift motion. Silently signalling the bartender to refill his glass with a tap on the table, Luca raised his can of beer to his lips, pausing halfway as he heard a familiar voice. Leaning forward over the bar to peer past the other patrons, Luca saw what he thought was a familiar face. Though slightly more disheveled than last he had seen her, a trait that he simply chalked up to the plummeting temperatures. Stepping away from the bar, Luca took a few short steps around the few patrons that separate their seats. Whether it was who he thought or not, a pretty lady was always worth talking to.

A grin already on his lips, Luca slid into the space between the woman and the patron next to her. Again Luca leaned out over the bar, as much to give himself a good look at the woman’s face as it was to announce his presence. Luca’s grin split into an earnest bark of laughter as he confirmed his suspicion. ”Bright Eyes!” Luca exclaimed without thinking. ”Me fav’rite desert rose! Ya know, if’n I didn’t know better, I’d think ye was followin’ me.” Luca gave Geanna a coy wink before turning to the bartender, placing Geanna’s drinks on his own tab. ”Fuck, I figured after the shit show tha Temple fell into I weren’t gonna see ya again. Wot brings ye ta the City? I dun suppose I’d be lucky enough ta actually have ye trackin’ me down?” Luca leaned on the bar as he spoke, the confident ghost of a smile never fading from his lips.

Despite his casual demeanor, Luca’s sharp eyes analyzed Geanna. She held herself differently than last time he had seen her. It was a quiet shift he had seen in many people, a quiet dampening of their personality. If Luca had to guess, between when he had last seen her and now the woman had been through a trial, and wasn’t yet resolved. Offering Geanna another wink, Luca added, ”It ain’t often a scoundrel like meself gets such a treat when it ain’t even barely mid-day.” Luca smiled warmly, studying Geanna through his heavy eyelashes.

She signaled the bartender and asked for a blood orange screwdriver. Truth be told, she wasn’t one to get tipsy before lunch but she needed something to numb her insides from the heavy thoughts that swirled in her mind. Plus, she liked the color of the drink. This cheered her up a bit.

Geanna looked up to find the sexy pirate she met during that desert campaign. At the sight of him, her heart took a sudden leap and she could feel her face heating up. “Oh, God. Please don’t blush. Please don’t blush” she internally commanded herself. Yet she still found one side of her face sliding into a smile which she immediately schooled. There was nothing she could do to stop the gleam in her eyes, however.

Then clearing her throat, she replied, “You’re a sight yourself, Luca.” Taking a good long look at the pirate. Her heart skipped another beat. “And, please… as if you’ll let yourself be tracked so easily.” She took a small sip of her drink and smiled at him as thanks for taking her tab. Then playing with the rim of her glass, “It’s business as usual for me even during holidays, sadly.” She paused. “Or not.” She faced him once again. “How about you? What brings a sea captain to dry land on a ‘special’ day such as this?” making air quotes on the word “special”.

Luca grinned heavily. He’d never admit it outside of a joking context, but the prideful pirate loved being showered with flattery. As Geanna spoke, Luca’s eyes darted over her form, habitually drinking in all the information he saw. The woman he had met in the desert had adjusted her appearance fit city and cold well enough. The fashionable blouse Luca remembered her in was replaced with the regular garb of someone more concerned with bundling themselves against that cold than the foolish parade of frozen women who chose a short dress and heels over reaminging warm. Luca also didn’t miss the somewhat melancholy tone as Genna touched on the holiday itself.

Offering Geanna a wink and a smile Luca held his hands out before him. ”“Bright Eyes, I ain’t been a sea capn’ in a spell. Ain’t nuthin’ but the sky fer me ‘n’ me crew these days.” Luca said, visibly swelling with pride at being able to mention his own airship, ”“‘N’ as usual, I’m ‘ere fer business.” Much as Geanna had done, Luca intentionally avoided mentioning what he was planning in the city. It was as much to avoid spiking her interest and having her ask to come along, as it was to avoid any patron who may be willing to break the unspoken rule of The SIlver Lady and sell him out in exchange for a favor with one of the mobs. ”“Now it’s lookin’ like I might jus’ be stayin’ a bit longer ‘n’ I intended jus’ fer tha comp’ny. Whatcha say we get a table.” As though anticipating the answer, Luca took a handful of steps away from the bar before pausing to turn and wait for his attractive companion. Whether Geanna followed him to the nearby booth or not, Luca wouldn’t stray far, his plan to drink alone already replaced with the idea of spending time with the beautiful healer instead.

”“Nah, I could ask ye the same question. Wot’s a lady a fine as yerself doin’ alone on a time a year when ev’ryone is supposed to be with folk they give a shit about, eh? Makes sense fer me ta be alone, no family ta speak of,” a lie, ”“no real place I’m welcum at,” another lie, ”“‘n’ far as I know, not a soul is lookin’ fer me,” still lying, ”“but you, well yer jus’ fantastic ‘n’ adorable enuff that I got a hard time imaginin’ that you’d be bravin’ all this cold by yerself, nyah?” Luca’s casual arrogance had shifted into a quiet concern, leaning in to watch Geanna as he spoke. Whether she answered truthfully or not, Luca figured anyone at a bar mid-day could use a distraction regardless.

Geanna smiled at the offer. Normally, she was a very independent woman but she needed the company that day. She got on her feet and followed Luca to one of the tables with her drink in hand. She smiled at him again as she took her seat.

“Well,” she began her not very enthusiastic response. “I haven’t been home since I was fifteen.” She took a small sip of her drink here to bolster herself to what she had to say next. “Though some of them are alive, my family is as good as dead.” Then she took another sip. “I was a triplet, did you know? Our eldest brother you’ve seen in action before,” here she tapped the tattoo on her side. “or what’s left of him.” Here she chuckled a little, taking a glance at the sky captain’s reaction. “..and my triplet sister, well, I haven’t seen her since she ran away when we were fourteen. Spent all my time looking for her and my other family members for a decade now with not a single clue.” Here she gulped a little bit more of her drink. “Been thinking maybe its time to call them gone and get on with life.” She looked away, fighting back tears from her words and downed the rest of her drink. She then raised her glass towards the bartender to signify she needed another one.

She then looked at Luca and gave a small smile. “It’s kinda embarrassing unloading all of my junk unto you.” She said, tracing the rim of her empty glass. “You can stop me any time if I’m going too far.”

Luca leaned back in his booth as Geanna unloaded what was on her mind. Though he remained quiet, his expressive features showed clearly what he was thinking. An uninterested understanding of being estranged from one's family, concerned curiosity at the idea of Geanna having bound her brother’s spirit to her Hatsu, and then guilty sympathy as he came to the understanding that she had actually been looking for her family, a different situation from his own. As she finished, Luca dismissively waved his hand. ”I’ll get tired o’ ye talkin’ jus’ as soon as I get tired o’ lookin’ inta yer eyes. Neither’s gonna be any time soon.” Luca leaned onto the table with a smug smirk. At that, a concerned expression crossed onto his face, as rapidly as Luca had transitioned from listening to flirting, his demeanor shifted to serious. ”I left me own home jus’ a bit younger ‘n’ you did. Not many folk know that ‘bout me neither. I weren’t always this charmin’ gentlefolk before ya. I left ‘cause the whole lot of ‘em can choke on the dicks that brought ‘em into this world.” Luca cut himself off as he was becoming visibly angry at just the thought of his hometown. ”That aint right,” Luca gave his head a short, slow shake. Opening his mouth, then closing it again, Luca battled internally over how much of his own personal story to share. In the end he settled on none. ”Look, theres a girl that works on me ship, not quite even 13 yet. Her da was a piece o’ shit. Lost the girl to a gang to work off his debts in a whorehouse. Her old man ain’t dead, but he might as well be dead ta her. She’s started seein’ me ‘n’ some o’ the rest o’ the crew as her family. Folk that actually give a shit about her ‘n’ what not.” Luca paused and let a sheepish grin spread across his face, ”Not that I give a shit about the lil’ pink wonder.”

Luca cocked an eyebrow as he paused briefly, not entirely sure where his own story was going. ”I guess what I’m sayin’ is that it dunn matter how long it’s been since ye’ve seen yer family, or if they’re dead or not. If ye give a shit about ‘em, they’re family. Blood or not. If they ain’t nuthin’ but a head ache, fuck ‘em. Leave ‘em behind fer good. Find some folk who give a shit about ya, Bright Eyes.” His rambling at an end for at least the time, Luca sat back in his booth, gesturing to the bartender in the same fashion Geanna had for a fresh can of beer. ”Like any charmin’ rogues who’ve set out ta buy ye a drink or six fer example.” A wolfish grin came over Luca as he gave Geanna a wink.

Geanna took a minute to digest what Luca said. “If you give a shit about them, they’re family. Blood or not. If they’re nothing but a headache, fuck them. Leave them behind for good.” Replayed in her mind. Did she still care about her family? Aleanna and Alarion, her triplets, they will always be a part of her. Her father, the kindest man he had met, she loved him dearly. Her stepsister, Zenari, she loved her too. She smiled at remembering their training sessions with her. Their grandmother—she was always so strict and distant but she could tell she loved them. Yes, they were family. Geanna smiled a little at their remembrance but quickly frowned when the image of her mother in the arms of her uncle came to mind. Those two can burn in hell. Those traitors to the memory of her father. Yet how ironic it is that those she considered not family anymore are the only ones whom she knew were still alive and well. And the rest…

Tears welled up in her eyes but she quickly shook her head to dismiss them. She did not like feeling sad and Luca’s words reminded her that there was still a future ahead. “Find some folk who give a shit about you.” He had said. And he was right. Enough of this sadness. Its time to move forward.

Geanna wasn’t a practiced drinker and it was evident at the end of one drink. She was already starting to loosen up. “charming rougue, is it?” She grinned back at Luca. “Delightful, pleasing, agreeable, appealing, attractive-- all synonyms that describes you in my eyes, Luca.” And Geanna had a foxy expression, taking a sip of her drink that just arrived. She looked at him through the rim of the glass and appreciated what a work of art he was.

Admittedly, that was one of the last responses Luca expected, especially after the conflicting emotions that clearly ran through Geanna’s mind. The momentary shock at having gentle bantering flirt becoming something more open gave Luca brief pause as he blinked in pleasant surprise. While he kept an air of arrogance and silly confidence, he never expected it reciprocated. Internally he was far more humble than what he projected, it just became habit out of his time in command as a captain. It was an odd combination, the emotional paradox Luca found himself in. General excitement at the reciprocated interest of the bright-eyed beauty before him, and anxiety at anyone peeling beneath the swagger he had created for himself.

Leaning forward onto the table, a half-smile playing on his lips, Luca gave a nod of thanks to the waitress as she dropped off his newest drink without breaking eye-contact with Geanna. “Well, miss Bright-Eyes, sounds like yer even better at describin’ me then I am.” Tilting his head as though something had caught his attention, Luca turned a sly gaze back to Geanna. Gracefully sliding from the booth, Luca extended a hand to Geanna. “Might ye honor this simple man wit’ a dance?” Luca continued to grin as though he were enjoying his own private joke and the answer didn’t begin to matter to him as the aged jukebox continued to play and aren- rock power-ballad. If Geanna accepted Luca’s ridiculous offer to dance in the worn down bar, he’d pull her from her seat and set the dances pace at a slow dance. If she rejected the offer, he’d hook a chair with his foot and pull it to the table to sit at the head of the table next to, instead of across from Geanna. Whether Luca ended up slow dancing with Geanna, or sitting next to her his next question would remain the same. With the intent to continue flirting, what came out of his mouth instead was almost a surprise to even Luca. ”If there is folk ye give a shit about, dun give up on ‘em.” His somber statement melting to a genuinely warm smile, Luca added, “I’d be more ‘n’ happy ta have ya stick around even then.”

“A dance?” she asked, looking around at all the seated patrons. “Here?” bewilderment taking over. But seeing the smile Luca gave her made her pause from outright rejecting him in embarrassment. The smile held so much promise to her at what could be—a new bond. That was what she needed more and the promise was too enticing to let go of. Blushing red from the crazy proposal, she held out her hand to reach for Luca’s and she stood up on her feet. The man held her and started a slow dance. Its been years since Geanna had danced and she quite enjoyed this especially the close proximity to the strong solid figure that was the sky captain. She felt safe in his arms and she couldn’t help smiling up at him despite some audience members starting to whistle at them for their crazy yet romantic stunt.

”If there is folk ye give a shit about, dun give up on ‘em.” He said to her and she nodded in response. But what he said after made her the happiest she’s ever been. “I’d be more ‘n’ happy ta have ya stick around even then.” Her eyes started to water but she blinked away the happy tears. She gave him another smile, this one bigger than the last. She was overwhelmed with emotion that someone would want her to be part of their life that she was chocked up inside. She squeezed his hand as a form of overwhelming gratitude for accepting her even though he still barely knew her. That was okay. He said he was going to stick around. There’ll be time to get to know each other better in the future.
