Curiosity is a terrible thing. It drove the mind to ask questions that might not need to be answered, to poke one's nose where it really didn't belong. And to get into far more trouble than was anything like sensible.

Jacob was terribly curious. It was one of his great strengths, and one of his major failings. And he'd never seen a logging camp before. Back when he was a wee bunny (before his village threw him out) his home was isolated in the mountains, and there just wasn't enough good lumber there to warrant loggers paying his little village a visit. So when he came upon a logging operation in the foothills of the Newhart Mountains, he simply couldn't help himself. He had to see the inner workings of the logging operation, how they laid out their machines, the logistics of logging and replacement...everything! He had to see it all.

Unfortunately, the logging type - that is to say, large, burly men (and not a few women) with muscles of iron and senses of humor denser than the trees they felled - are not prone to being welcoming to bunnies who snoop around, get into things, and don't even have the sense to wear a hard-hat. And when loggers are unamused, they get angry, and their muscles start doing the thinking for them.

Jacob had the advantage of being a fast and nimble young man. The loggers had the advantage of everything else. They were strong, knew the area like the back of their axes, and there were many, where Jacob was just one terminally curious bunny. He managed to lead them on a merry chase around the logging compound for ten full minutes before they cornered him, panting, against a veritable wall of felled lumber.

"Now, now guys," Jacob said with a smile that was trying to be cheerful and fooling just about nobody as his pink eyes flicked from angry face to angry face, then to the road - he had been so very close - and back again. "I know you're mad, but there's really no need fo-" The fist cut him off, doubling him over with a gasp. With his back to the woodpile there was no way for him to ride the blow - if he even knew how - and he hunched, gagging and struggling to breathe.

Which just made him an easier target for the rest.

Alex's Stats

Small pebbles crunched underneath Alex's boots as he paced the dirt trail, approaching the edge of the Newhart Mountains. He glanced up at the peaks, hidden from sight by clouds. Conflicting emotions dueled for his attention, both eager and reluctant to return to that place. Focusing his gaze downwards, Alex narrowed his eyes as the edge of a lumber camp came into view. Such camps weren't uncommon, but they always made him a bit sad. Some day, they would penetrate deep into the heart, taking down even the trees of his childhood. It didn't anger Alex though. He knew these people depended on these jobs, and it would be against his principles to strip them of them.

As he got closer, the machines seemed strangely...empty. Normally he'd be able to see the loggers going about their normal operations, but not even a tiny hint of saw noises could be heard. Striding ever closer, Alex thought he caught the faint noise of shouts and jeers. Never a good sign. For a moment Alex stood, indecisive of whether to investigate or simply ignore the noises. Boredom won out over apathy, and Alex angled himself towards the noises. What was the worst that could happen? Weaving between tents and machines, Alex emerged to the sight of a ring of bulky loggers, unable to see what they were circled around. Unable to see, but Alex wagered a guess. Tapping the nearest logger on the shoulder, the man swiveled, a wild gleam in his eyes. "What's going on?" The man almost swung his fist at the stranger's head. Almost. The stranger's eyes stared directly into his own, seeming almost dead with boredom.

Grunting, the logger pointed towards the center. Through a small gap, Alex spotted a person, beaten black, blue, and bloody by the mob that was jeering. Fucking mobs. Mob mentality was a personal pet peeve of Alex's. Why follow a group instead of thinking for yourself? Mobs only lead to insanity and mindless destruction in Alex's mind. Shoving his way through the small crowd to get a better look, Alex sighed in disappointment. "What horrible crime could they have possibly committed to deserve this?" Pointing at Jacob, Alex turned to face the group of fifteen or so. Grumbling ensued through the ranks, until the largest and most muscular among them stepped forward. "Found 'em snooping around the edge of camp." Deafening silence ensued as Alex looked straight at the man. "So who did they kill?" Blinking twice, the man who spoke glared at the strange newcomer.

"Didn't you hear me?" Stepping forward threateningly, the man prepared to sock the stranger who had interrupted their fun. Swiveling fully, Alex dropped the bullshit and looked at the man with dead eyes. "Tell you what. I'll fight all of you one on one. One after the other. If I beat you all, I'm taking that guy with me. If one of you poor sods manages to knock my ass out, well, I suppose you're free to do what you want with me." Alex let his insults stew in the audience let them get just angry enough before he continued speaking. "Fair warning, if you all try to attack me at once, well..." Alex reached over his shoulder, fingering the hilt of his sword.

Jacob was unconscious. On the whole, it was a good place to be. It meant he didn't have to hurt for a while. He'd feel jealous of himself later, when he returned to the world of interesting things like curiosity and pain.

The moment rang like a bell. It looked like the spokesman for the mob might actually take up the (new) intruder on his offer. Maybe. Perhaps. ...No. The logger shakes his head with a gruff snort. "You en't poking 'round where you don't belong. Just don't get any funny ideas, got it?" The group of loggers grumble, giving Alex dark looks, but they began to disperse. They had actual work to do, not just seeing to nosy rabbit-eared intruders.

With them gone, it was just Alex alone. Alone with the unconscious Jacob, that is. The rabbit mayjuu was clearly still alive - even mobs of muscled loggers weren't going to kill some random snooper - but he was, frankly, a mess. Nothing looked broken, but he had been worked over like they had been tenderizing meat. He would be a mass of black and blue later. Further, his left arm looked dislocated, hanging a strangely from his shoulder. Blood marred his face from split lip and bleeding nose, and both eyes had swollen shut. His clothing was in scarcely better state; his hoodie had come off and was missing an arm, his tanktop was torn, and his shoes were simply missing! In all, he was one battered bunny...

Tch. Truthfully Alex had been hoping they'd take him up, itching to get some of his stress out. Sighing in disappointment, Alex turned to the apparently unconscious sod that the loggers had been taking out their frustration on. Rabbit ears. That was the first thing Alex noticed. Crouching to get a closer look, Alex peered closely at the furry protrusions. They seemed real enough. You know what, I don't really care right now. Straightening up, Alex took in the damage accrued by the rabbit girl...boy...he couldn't tell. Full of mysteries aintcha? Glancing back, Alex caught a couple of the workers glaring in his direction.

What a pain in the ass. Sweat stained Alex's chest as he kept a steady pace up the mountain. Jacob was draped over his shoulder, bouncing slightly with each step Alex took. In the end, Alex had reluctantly decided that he couldn't leave Jacob there. Not only were his injuries severe, the loggers would have most certainly finished the job as soon as he left. The problem lay in where to take the rabbit. There was a small village not too far from the logging camp, but Alex was loath to head back the way he'd came. Besides, he'd probably end up getting roped into some police investigation or something. Screw that. Yet, Alex's eventual choice didn't sit quite right with him either. Nobody else had ever been to his, well, not home exactly. But it was a place he could relax - more or less.

"Should've been able to take care of yourself, bud." Naturally, Jacob did not respond. Alex had been jogging up the mountain for at least three hours now, in a grove much too thick for any vehicles to get through. His legs burning, Alex periodically checked his compass to make sure he was heading in the right direction. Sunlight filtered through the trees, brighter than before, and Alex slowed. The cabin came into view, simple and plain. It was quite large for such a rustic exterior. Glaring at the unconscious bunny on his shoulder, Alex walked up, clicking the secret latch hidden behind a small piece of decorative wood paneling, and opened the door. A large living room greeted them, with a fireplace and couch taking up the bulk of the left half. To the right and front stood a large kitchen, complete with island. Directly right, a door led to Alex's study, though it seemed too empty for its size, with only a desk and recliner. A ladder in between the door and kitchen led up to the second floor.

Alex strode over, and carefully laid Jacob down on top of the large island in the kitchen. "Thanks for making me disinfect the counter later jackass." Again, Jacob didn't deign to reply. Glancing over the bunny, Alex decided the first order of business was to get Jacob out of his dirty clothes. Alex coughed a little apprehensively, failing to convince himself that the rabbit's gender didn't matter. Shaking his head, Alex pulled out his knife, cutting Jacob's tank top off and pulling off the bunny's pants. Fix the arm. Walking around to Jacob's dislocated arm, Alex moved it to a ninety degree angle away from Jacob's body. From there, Alex would steadily pull until the bone popped back into its socket. Please don't wake up.

By some minor miracle (or, more likely, accumulated bodily trauma) Jacob did not wake up when his shoulder was reset. Alex had already discovered that, despite the slender chest and girlish hips, this was a distinctly male bunny, but that wasn't important, right? No, not at all. Just had to patch him up, and wait for him to wake up. The shoulder made a distinctive popping noise when it settled back into its proper place, and the bunny didn't wake up. Which was good. In his current state, the snooper was going to be in enough pain as it was without having to deal with the shock of a dislocated arm being put back to rights.

Once that was taken care of, it was just a matter of mending the lesser injuries, binding the arm to let it heal properly, and then depositing the unconscious rabbit mayjuu on the couch until he woke up.

Jacob, eventually, woke up. That, in itself, was a good thing. It meant he wasn't dead! Which...frankly was the only good thing going for him right now. Everything else was bad. His...everything hurt. There was a distinctive extra soreness to his left arm that he didn't like at all, but it wasn't broken. Dislocated, then. Or, had been? His clothing was...um...missing. Except his underwear, a pair of snug and comfy boxer-briefs in a lime green he quite liked. And his Lion's Paw, which was a little surprising. Small mercies, perhaps.

The rabbit announced his return the (very painful) world of the waking my groaning, low and soft, but still distinctly audible in the otherwise quiet room. He was lying on something soft. And his eyes didn't want to open. Great. Effectively blind and unable to really fend for himself, though clearly someone had taken care of him after his round with the loggers. He groaned again and worked his jaw, making sure it (or his teeth) weren't broken, and waited for...something to turn up.

The sun had long since set, and Alex was getting tired. He was reclining in the living room, waiting for Jacob to wake up from his deep sleep. Glancing up from his book, he snorted at the sight of the still unconscious rabbit. At least he knew it was a guy now, which helped soothe his fears that he would get slapped when Jacob woke up. At least, he probably wouldn't. The gauntlet on the rabbit's hand caught Alex's eye once more, the bright red clashing with the light grey couch. After some earlier deliberation, Alex had decided to leave it with Jacob. It was clearly more valuable than the rest of Jacob's stuff, and Alex knew he wouldn't want anyone taking away his things like that. Beyond that, it didn't seem to be much of a weapon, and even if it was, Alex figured that anyone who got beat up by those loggers wouldn't be too much of a challenge. Unknowingly, however, Alex had taken the key to Jacob's device, leaving it in a pile with his other possessions on the kitchen counter.

Groaning. Jacob had finally awoken. Throwing his book onto the low table in front of him, Alex walked towards the not-so-unconscious bunny. He'd changed out of his travel gear and taken a quick shower, and now wore a black hoodie with gray sweatpants. The fireplace crackled behind him, driving out the smell of must and disuse. Overall, quite a homey place. Or it would be, if not for the injured man groaning on the couch. Grabbing a chair, Alex dragged it over to the couch before sitting down the wrong way, interrogation style. Eyeing the clearly groggy bunny, Alex muttered incomprehensibly under his breath, before taking a deep breath. "Sit still." Once again, a wave of annoyance swept over him. "You'd better be thankful I helped you out, and you can be damn sure you're going to pay me back for that. The best way you can do that right now is by laying still so that I can get some sleep. If you want to leave, then be my guest, but you're not going to get very far out here during the nighttime. One more thing, I catch you snooping around...well, we'll cross that bridge when we get there. For now, be a good little bunny and get some more sleep."

At this point, Alex was basically just venting his anger out on the injured Jacob laying in front of him. He didn't have much interest in explaining what had happened to someone who was so out of it, and instead opted for the easier route of "sit down, shut up". If it turned out Jacob didn't need any more help, Alex would be more than delighted to send him on his way without a second thought. However, it didn't look like Jacob was going anywhere for a while, unfortunately.

Jacob did his best to reply in the affirmative that he would stay out of...whoever the person was's belongings. He did this with a indistinct mumble (his face was really a mess) that he hoped sounded reassuring. Don't go snooping indeed. Jacob was capable of many things, but navigating effectively blind was not one of them. It wasn't like he was even trying to move; everything hurt too much to do that, and, frankly, he hadn't a clue where he was. Even if he could see where he was going, there was no way in any hell someone cared to name that he was going anywhere! At least not right now.

Once he'd recovered a bit, the whole snooping thing was a different story, but at least for the moment he was going to be a Good Bunny. He was just happy that his...captor? savior? had left him his underwear and his Lion's Paw. Kind of an odd omission, but hey, bonus points for Bunny House. Not that he minded being naked, given the choice, but doing so while recovering from a vicious beating by a bunch of thugs with no sense of humor and even worse hygiene was not very high on his list of "time for nakedness."

Besides, sleep sounded like a wonderful idea. People who had never experienced it before always tried to say being unconscious was really just another form of sleep, but they were, not to put too fine a point on it, talking straight out their backsides. Sleep was wonderful; Jacob quite liked sleep. He came up with some of his best ideas while sleeping. Being unconscious was like...a waiting room. Not restful, not even comfortable, just a ground state until you woke up again. Jacob was quite happy to spend as little time unconscious as possible. But sleep...yes. Sleep sounded good right now.

And so, without so much as a snort, Jacob slept.

The rabbit boy mumbled what Alex guessed was an affirmative, before promptly falling asleep. Oh. That was easy. I guess I should've expected it with those injuries of his. Alex walked away from the living room where Jacob was sleeping, rubbing his eyes. He was sleepy too, damn it. Yawning, Alex walked towards the door on the opposite side of the room, but angled towards a ladder that led up next to the door. Grabbing on, he hoisted himself up, opening the trapdoor into the loft.

It was a fairly spacious room, with a large desk with various drawing materials directly in front of Alex as he slid himself through the opening in the floor. To his right, along that wall, was another desk with what looked like a gaming PC on it. The machine was dark right now, and covered with a thin layer of dust. Guess I'll have to do some cleaning up in here. To Alex's left was the third wall, with a window overlooking the forest at the back of the house. A small easel with paints was set up with a chair, so that one could paint while looking out into the forest.

Alex ignored all of this, instead opening the door that was on the wall behind Alex when he'd climbed up through the trapdoor. He walked out onto the balcony area between the two upstairs rooms, the smooth wood railing sliding effortlessly across his palm as he walked towards the door leading to the other side, which was directly above the living room where Jacob was sleeping. It was good to be back. The final door of the night creaked as Alex gently swung it open, revealing the dark interior of a large bedroom. It was simple, with just a bed and dresser to his left, and a large window to his right, with plenty of open space in between. Another door on the wall he faced when walking in led to the bathroom, but Alex was too tired to bother with it. He fell into bed, and promptly passed out, snoring loudly.

In the morning, the birds were chirping and the sun rose over the horizon, but Alex remained asleep and snoring, catching up on that which he had missed over the past few months.
