There's drugs to be done, so I gotta run

"Den of Thieves" was quite the accurately named establishment. The run down bar in the southernmost part of York Shin City was known for three things. Those were good booze, a hell of a crowd at the cards table, and being a popular spot for the Paulo family. The Paulo family was a small but relatively powerful crime family, and they frequented the place. Oursa was at the cards table waiting to be dealt his first hand. The family's power came from them being one of the only groups in the city capable of moving massive amounts of weapons around, virtually undetected. It was rumored that they had a supplier with near infinite amounts of firearms, but rumors often lie. The real magic worker was the head of the family, Costo Paulo. The man was a genius at gunrunning, and his routes had never once been compromised. Recently however, another family was looking to take over the routes, and establish themselves as the premier weapons dealers in the south side. The Marcio family had been quarreling with the Paulo family for a little while now, although it was mostly drunken fights between grunts and arguments about pride. Only, as of last week, it escalated to bloodshed. It was known that the Marcio family wanted to get into the business, but they never fully moved on Paulo's until then. A Marcio goon gunned down a Paulo dealer in the middle of his sale, killing both him and his clients. He ran off with the goods and brought them back to his family. He immediately rose in the organization, now calling himself a capo. His name was Julio, and Julio had a price on his head now. The heads of the Paulo family were all in the bar today, in a room behind a door which a man stood guard. Oursa wouldn't dare try to barge in and ask the men for information on Julio, even though they were the ones who were offering the reward. For one, the mafia was very select about who they give contracts to. Secondly, Oursa wasn't a hitman, he was a bounty hunter, and they didn't look well upon that profession. However, if he brought Julio to them, they would pay indiscriminately. He decided he'd wait around the table for a drunk member of the family to slip up, or he'd indirectly ask a couple questions here and there. Either way, he didn't plan on leaving empty handed tonight. Edited by Ken's Bitch, Nov 14 2017, 03:35 PM.

Jacob sighed as he looked up at the sign of the Den of Thieves. This was definitely not his usual sort of hangout. The typical clientele here was a little...rougher than he typically associated with. Not that he thought he was better than them, or something dumb like that! Just...they tended to be really, really full of themselves or just no damn fun! But the problem was...He needed customers. His usual channels as an information broker had been dry for weeks, and even a fun-loving bunny like him needed to eat. Before his funds ran out, he had to find a new client; places like the Den of Thieves were full of people who just loved to get information, especially the kind that others didn't want them to have. Jacob sighed again, then straightened up. He'd have to just...put one foot in front of the other. He'd be fine! After all, if he really had to, he was a pretty hard bunny to get ahold of. He stepped forward and approached the door. After pausing for a moment, he pushed it open and stepped inside, his ears twitching as he looked around the dim room. He had to find a client.... |

The guarded door creaked open on neglected hinges, prompting the sentry to casually throw a glance over his shoulder, as Spike exited the dim room beyond and promptly closed it behind him. He only slowed to exchange passing nods with the hired muscle, then found an unoccupied stool at the bar with his name on it. "An Old Fashioned. Bourbon, and make it a double." The hunter stated dismissively before the bartender could ask, staring down into his muddled reflection on the bar top as he did so. Alcohol in general was never Spike's go to beverage even under the best of circumstances, but a meeting with Costo and boys could drive a man to drink. Truth be told, their chat had gone better than he could've every hoped, yet it was as he feared when he recognized the number on the caller ID: they wanted him to do a job. If this had been six months ago the hunter would've jumped at the chance to work with them again, begged even. The routes they chose and the territory he went through to make deliveries didn't exactly make their assignments the easiest money he ever made; although, they were easily the most lucrative in terms of payment for services rendered. However, as of six months ago Spike had decided to get away from illegal activity, but no sooner had he returned to York Shin City did folks get their hooks back in him, at least for now. He owed the Paulo's simply too many favors to turn down their request tonight, so his hands were tied in this situation. Thankfully, favors are often a two-way street, and Costo had been in a generous mood. The deal they reached was simple: Capture or kill some guy named Julio, and consider all debts squared. It was almost too good to be true, which is why he wanted this agreement in writing and signed in blood. The small cut on the thumb Spike used to seal the deal too still stung when he picked up the Old Fashioned the bartender finally put in front of him. Even with the bitters the bourbon in the cocktail was almost cloyingly sweet as he took the first sip. Channeling some of Motto's boundless optimism, the hunter chuckled to himself wondering if some of his other clients could settle up in one shot like this too. One could only hope. Besides finishing his drink and paying for it nothing was holding Spike from going on the hunt for Julio at that moment, but neither did he feel the need to rush things. The night was young, and he doubted Julio would bolt from the city so soon after moving up in the world. Running from his problems would've definitely hurt his rep in ways not easily fixed, or forgotten. No, he had to be holed up somewhere in York Shin, finding him was going to be the real trick though. If Julio was boring he could simply surround himself with some other Marcio mooks, yet if he were smart hiring mercenaries or professional bodyguards wouldn't have been a bad idea. While knocking back a third sip, Spike silently hoped Julio was the boring type. |

"Texas Hold 'em" was a game that Oursa was well acquainted with. Early in his travels, he had befriended an old drunk who slept on the side of a saloon, in a small town near his home. He'd bring him four packs of "Five Loko," and half drank bottles of "Crackin" rum. The man, delighted to have a drinking buddy and extra booze, would play friendly games of "Texas Hold 'em," where he'd act as both dealer and the other players. Oursa watched as he set up a stuffed bear and a platoon of toy soldiers as opposing players, and dealt them and him a hand. As he went around the table, he'd do hilarious impressions with the bear and the soldiers. He, ironically, gave the bear a drunk personality. But the real kicker was the man acting with each soldier differently. Often, Oursa couldn't contain his laughter. But, the man never gave off a single signal as to what his hand was, ever. After losing every single game they'd played for the first week, Oursa had enough. He told the man, "Old head, you're drunk as shit every time we play. Why can't you ever play serious? Just put the drink aside until later, and play an honest hand. I can't read shit from you when you're sloshed. Why is that?" The man simply replied, "Silly silly, you just answered before you even asked." 'Answered before I...' He thought briefly before he said with a smile, "You bastard... That explains why you have no poker face, but doesn't playing drunk every time throw your game off?" "Not when you've never played sober." The drunk said and then chuckled. That philosophy stuck with Oursa since, and was being implemented in the bar tonight. He'd only had one beer tonight, and it had been a while since his last game. Oursa looked around at the people he shared the dealer with. There was six other players, and the dealer. As soon as he finished glancing around, his hand was dealt. With all players reaching towards their hands, Oursa blurted something out, pausing each player in their tracks. "Before we see what lady luck dealt us, I'll wager something. If any of you win this hand, I'll buy the whole table a shot of "Jim Bean." If I manage to win, I only ask one of you buys me a shot." All of them looked around as if Oursa wasn't serious, and laughed simultaneously. Of course they all agreed, and the hand was played. Oursa then followed up with another statement. "Bartender, six shots of Jim. Please." The whole table roared in glee, believing they would be enjoying a merry toast after this game. They didn't. Minutes passed, and Oursa won on a two pair, King high. They all grunted and mumbled among one another, and one threw the money on the table. He said "Dumbass, you still ordered the whole tray of shots." Oursa walked to the bar and grabbed the tray. Returning to his seat, he placed it on his lap. "I suppose I did, didn't I... Don't wanna waste it." He proceeded to throw the six shots back with ease, and belching loudly. He said with a slight slur, "Bartender... bartender I believe the man over there just ordered my seventh." The bartender walked over and exchanged Oursa the shot for the tray. The bounty hunter threw the seventh back, and looked at his fellow player with his eyes low. "If ya would, Dealer..." Edited by Ken's Bitch, Dec 17 2017, 12:33 PM.

If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster.
