If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster.

The town was in a sorry state if Alex was to be perfectly honest. Broken buildings everywhere, he couldn't take five paces without stepping in a puddle. Yet, the residents he saw looked happy enough. They smiled at each other as they passed, and didn't mind in the slightest that their feet were getting soaked through their shoes.

A few drops hit the ground, and Alex glanced up. The rain quickly evolved into a downpour, and Alex smiled as his hair was forced down under the weight of the clear liquid. He'd always liked the rain, it put him at ease. At the same time however, Alex was glad for his coat and boots, which the rain slid right off of. Rain was nice and all, but he didn't want to get soaked all the way through.

Alex arrived at the hotel, which was in better condition than the rest of the buildings, apparently due to its location directly across from the Kitty Cat Casino. Lights flashed, cutting through the night darkness like a knife through butter, and Alex heard boisterous laughter coming from within. As he watched, a limousine rolled up, and a suited man stepped out under the protection of an umbrella.

Alex checked in to his room, and settled in. The hot shower revitalized him, and he sighed as his various scars stung at the hot water. He turned off the shower and stepped out, drying himself absentmindedly. Alex had heard of the Kitty Cat, and decided that it had been far too long since he'd had some fun gambling. Accordingly, he'd headed here as soon as he heard about the establishment.

"Even if I can't drink, that doesn't mean I can't enjoy myself." Alex looked out his window to the casino, and felt a slight twinge of guilt. Taking time to enjoy himself here meant he wasn't preparing for the hunter exam. Even if it was only one day, every second was valuable when it came to training.

Alex banished the thought with a shake of his head. A day of relaxation and entertainment would help restore his spirits, and the hunter exam wasn't going anywhere. Besides, he could get some training in before he went to bed. Alex rummaged through his pack and pulled out a thick target with latex on the back. Alex stuck it to the wall, and then pulled out his knife.

Flipping it so that he held it by the blade, Alex exhaled deeply, waiting for his heartbeat to settle. Ba-dum. Alex threw the knife, watching it rotate through the air before burying itself in the target. He smiled. Alex threw the knife over and over for the next hour, with it becoming an unconscious action. His body moved, but his mind was busy thinking about tomorrow.

Finally, Alex stopped himself, and walked to look over his suit. It was a silver-gray tuxedo with a white collar, black shirt, and black and white tie. There was a chain that ran from the second button to the inside of the jacket, and a small pin on the left breast. The pants were the same color as the jacket, both made of smooth silk. Damn, he loved this outfit. Alex usually hated dressing up formally, and suits were usually boring and generic, but he made a special exception for his own. He had spent a significant chunk of money on it, but never regretted his purchase. If he was gonna dress up, best to look damn good while doing it. Alex knew he would stand out, but it didn't matter tomorrow. Maybe he'd even attract a woman.

Spoiler: click to toggle

Alex woke up the next morning, and eagerly dressed in his suit, admiring himself in the mirror. He slipped his knife into the inside of the jacket, hiding it from view. His sword was too large to sneak in, but going unarmed didn't sit right with him. Facial hair wasn't a problem, as Alex always kept himself clean shaven, but his hair was a mess. Of course, that was how he liked it, but he had to do something to make it look more formal. He pushed it up a bit with the aid of some hair product, and grimaced. He'd never been good at styling his hair, and it always seemed to resist whatever he did to it. "Whatever, it's good enough."

Alex walked across the street to the casino, keeping an eye out for any potential ladies. The bouncers stepped aside and let him through the decadent doors, and Alex smiled as he stepped inside. Music, conversation, laughter. It had been far too long. The bar served patrons drinks in crystal glasses, and men roared in victory as they scored big at the tables.

Alex walked to the bar, sitting down on one of the high quality stools. "Give me something that tastes good, no alcohol." Alex waited as the bartender whipped up his drink, his mind drifting away to other things. The hunter exam... every time he thought of it, the people he'd met surfaced in his mind. Roy, Motto, Doc... people that supported him. Alex always told himself he didn't need the support of anyone else, that he was meant to be a lone wolf. But the support he'd gotten... it had filled a hole in his chest, a hole that had been there since...

The bartender plopped a glass down in front of him, and Alex jumped, shaken out of his introspection. Silently, he thanked the bartender for keeping him from thinking back to those events. The drink was a mixture of blue and purple, with a slice of pineapple on the edge. Alex took a sip, sighing in appreciation. It was just the right amount of sour and sweet, and had no trace of the telltale burn of alcohol.

Shiro had just spent nearly all of his money getting food for both him and Felix and was starting to run out. He wasn't too sure of what he should do to gain some more until he heard about a large casino nearby. So after thinking about it for a bit, he decided to go give it a try, even though he wasn't the best gambler due to his blindness he knew that in certain games he was a master.

"Come now Felix, we are going to go get some cash," Shiro called which caused Felix to run towards him before scurrying up his cloak and resting on his shoulder. Shiro just smiled and pet his little puppy before he started to walk down the street. Using his echolocation he managed to keep watch and protect himself and Felix from anything that may start trouble while also focusing on which way he should go.

As he was walking it started to rain which caused Felix to whimper due to his dislike of the rain. So Shiro put up his hood to protect both of them from the rain before rushing towards the casino. Once he reached it he instantly felt the change in the atmosphere with all the loud sounds and bustling movements. He knew even if he didn't have echolocation he would know where everything was, but he continued to move forward until he reached the bar.

"One water please." He said before placing down a few coins which were enough to pay for the water. Once it arrived he moved it towards him so Felix could sit on his arms while drinking the water. Once Felix finished he decided to go explore before Shiro could pick him up he was already sniffing at another person and started to lick him. "Felix, enough. Leave the guy alone." He said before picking Felix up and setting him down on his shoulder. Felix followed this by running back into Shiro's cloak and nestling in it. "Sorry about him, he's still a puppy and is learning how to act." He apologized to the man.

If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster.

Alex was still sipping his drink at the bar when a puppy ran up and started licking him. Alex smiled and patted his head a couple times before his owner ran up and apologized to him for his behavior. "Oh, it's no trouble." Alex smiled at the man, who towered over him. His eyes were pure white with no pupils or iris, but he didn't walk like a blind man. "Say, were you planning on gambling?" Alex looked again at the man's blind eyes with concern. "Be careful, someone might try to cheat you because of your eyes."

Alex drained his glass and stood up, getting ready to hit the games. He smiled again at the sight of the small puppy - he believed the man had called him Felix - huddling under the man's cloak. Alex had always liked animals, and he could tell Felix would grow up to be an intelligent companion. "Also, a word of advice. Most of the folks in here are rich or important, so I would keep Felix underneath that cloak of yours. They might not respond as kindly as me."

Alex put money on the bar, and checked his wallet. There wasn't much left in there, and Alex wasn't one to gamble it all in blackjack or poker. The first step was to get some more in a slot machine. He was going to walk away, when he glanced back at the blind man. What harm could it do to be a little friendlier for a change? He was here to have fun and enjoy himself, and the man could use a guide and an extra pair of eyes to watch Felix. "Hey, do you want to come with me? We can hit the slots and score big, and I'll help you keep an eye on Felix." Alex stuck out his hand. "Name's Alex. Alex Snow."

“Get that animal out!” Igor didn’t notice the animal until it began to lick a customer. “Out! Out! Fucking puppies running around? Not in the Kitty Cat asshole. Get it? Not in a Cat’s ass? Hole? You catch that? No? No dogs in cat’s assholes. Get it? Because it’s weird..a dog fuckig a cat? No?” Half-way through Igor’s antagonistic scorn, a distressed server approached and began to beg, “Igor-sama, please I must go to my wife! She is too ill to care for our children and the little one has gone missing..I cannot lose this job, Igor-sama. I promise you I will work extra hours without pay but please I must find my daughter and care for my wife!” The waiter was sweating and shaking as he pleaded, it was clear he was fighting hard not to run out and find his missing child. It was hard to say what made keeping his job that important but the man was beside himself with genuine anxiety.

“Who’s going to serve drinks Lee?" Igor snapped, "I’ll lose my job if I don’t get drinks to the VIP tables Lee. That’s why we get paid extra!! Because we signed a contract based on our unwavering commitment…fuck. You’re fucking me right now. Dammit Lee. I need my job too, you know! Go. Get your kid. Just go. You’re firing us both if you leave. The cops will find the kid Lee, and your wife is probably a drama queen. I’ve seen it before, Lee. Wives get all pissy because their man ain’t home and they make shit up.”

Igor nodded sagely and gave Lee’s shoulder a pat. “Your kid probably ain’t even missing. Your old lady’s just lyin’.”

At this the other man burst into tears. “What if I found a replacement?”

"Ah, shit. I knew this would happen. You'd better get out of here dude, before security throws you out." Alex quickly distanced himself, not wanting to get caught up with the tall guy. What was the point of dressing up in this badass suit if he got thrown out? Weaving in and out of the machines, Alex picked one at random and sat down, catching his breath. Should be a bit safer over here. Nobles wouldn't bother with puny slot machines, so this area mostly has upper class merchants, not the big wigs.

I've never gambled before. The revelation hit Alex like a bag of rocks, shattering the world as he knew it. Why did I come to a fancy casino when I've never gambled a day in my life? Did I really just come here because I wanted to wear my suit, which is admittedly fucking badass? I suppose there's worse reasons to come, but...what the fuck Alex?

An inconspicuous man brushed past Alex, snatching his wallet in the process. Alex felt the slight motion, but it took him a second to realize what had just happened. Wonderful. Alex only caught a flicker of motion as the pickpocket disappeared around the corner. Alex swiftly jogged to the corner, turning it casually. He couldn't afford to make a scene in such a high-quality establishment.

The thief was nowhere to be seen among the huge throng standing around the corner. Looked like some sort of reunion between two noble families. Stuck up shits. This night just keeps getting better and better. I'm broke, I don't know how to gamble, and those bodyguards looking at me like I killed someone.

Everyone's always telling you to be humble. When was the last time someone told you to be great?

Kenneth was annoyed. Very annoyed. He liked to act like he was mature, always cool and suave. The fact of the matter is, he wasn't. Not even remotely. He was only eighteen, the boyish tendencies weren't close to leaving his mind and his hormones weren't close to stabilizing in his body. So needless to say, when he got annoyed, he also got petty. That's the reason why he was still at this casino despite having no reason to be there, like at all. And it's already rare for Kenneth to venture outside of Cinema Town, let alone voluntarily stay away for even a second longer than he actually has to. Simply because he was petty.

A girl he met some time ago in the exploration of a case. Long story, but she ended up being his roommate, temporarily at least. She has a long history with gambling and some mafia stuff, but she was also addicted to it and couldn't escape it. So Kenneth thought he'd be a nice guy and bring her on a surprise trip. Like mentioned, he didn't like venturing outside of Cinema Town. That just showed how much effort he had put into this shit.

She ended up going back home because she was scared that they were gonna meet someone from the mafia chasing her. So now you got salt-sack Kenneth pouring drinks in his systems, completely not having a good time. So what does a drunk Kenneth do when he's drunk and not having a good time? He starts playing tricks on people with his abilities that are just too convenient not to use for pranks once in a while. He stumbled around the place, listening in on conversations, using his incredible method acting to appear inconspicuous. Getting all the information about the place that he can get his hand on and piecing them together. Apparently there were a large amount of rooms and departments where all type of stuff was going on. Mudwrestling to nobles and rich en meeting together in the room next to it. Catching names here and there, it was almost too easy.

Something about this one man not showing up to this reunion of noble families. For some reason everyone was talking about it. Kenneth flipped his phone and casually hacked a few government databases until he found the person he was looking for. Philip Featherward. A controversial figure known for his charm and tendency to seduce and chuck ladies from both noble houses. Also rumors of incest with his half sister. No wonder everyone was talking about it. He was only three years older than Kenneth. He looked for the most recent picture he could find, hid in the bathroom stall and used his CGI hatsu to change his appearance to model it.

Now it was time to infiltrate in that party that's not really a party. Five minutes later, he got turned down at the door. Two bodyguards with their nose up in their air, disgust in their face as they saw yung Philip asking for his special pass that only people from his status would get. Of course Kenneth didn't have it, so he turned back, mumbling something about how he was gonna grab it, pickpocketed some poor sucker and jumped right into the reunion. Ready to stir up some trouble.

"Whoa there gentlemen, no need to look so scary! I'll just be going around." Alex turned to stroll leisurely around the group. A heavy hand landed on his shoulder, and Alex glanced over to see that it belonged to one of the hulking bodyguards. The man pushed only lightly, but the weight behind it was enough to send Alex stumbling back several meters. So that's how it's gonna be, asshole? Dusting off his shoulders, Alex paced towards the same guard.

"You know, this day started out great." Clenching his fist, Alex reached inside his suit to grasp his knife. Stopping in front of the large man, Alex glared at him with a gaze as icy as a nuclear winter. He pulled his knife and placed it near the man's genitals, up against his inner thigh. "It's not going so great anymore. Now, I want you to decide which you value more. Your life, or your employment."

Alex pressed the knife in, needing only to move it to slice open a vein. The large man's face had gone pale, and he glanced behind him. The nobles were seemingly occupied, and hadn't even noticed the scene happening right in front of their eyes. Gulping, the man nodded complacently to Alex.

Alex removed the knife, and the bodyguard silently slipped around the corner, before running as quickly as he could to the door. If that man with the knife didn't get him, then his former employers were sure to hunt him down instead. Bursting through the doors, the former bodyguard ran out through the rain, putting as much distance as he could between himself and the Kitty Cat.

Alex slipped the knife back into his concealed sheath, slightly regretting the fact that the man hadn't fought back, but knowing that it would've caused a lot of problems. Looking in front of him, Alex saw a man laughing and talking with the rest of the nobles. It was impossible to tell if he was the pickpocket or not. No matter. Alex rifled through the wallet he'd stolen from the former bodyguard on his way out. About 200,000 Jenni. He could work with that. Time to go make some cash.

Turning, Alex walked away from the group of nobles, walking a few rows before turning left into an aisle of slot machines. He walked all the way to the end before sitting down, wanting to remain as far as possible from the group. Sliding in a few coins, Alex pulled the lever, watching the dials flash and twinkle.

Lee’s color went from the pale, distressed chalky color to an angry reddish blotchy complexion. Stepping onto the Kitty Cat’s main gambling floor was none other than Phillip Featherward. The year’s playboy bastard. Even Lee, a lowly VIP waiter knew of Phillip’s sickening behavior from the gossip circles and casino staff. According to what he heard that very evening, Mr. Featherward had been caught with small children in his luggage. Children that had been reported missing. Why this evil pervert was allowed to walk the streets let alone enter the Kitty Cat was beyond Lee, but it was the final straw. He would not serve the likes of that creature while his own wife was too ill to look after their children. His little girl was missing and seeing Phillip Featherward triggered the man’s deepest fears.

“Igor-sama. I quit. I promise to make recompense one day.”

“Fuck. Lee. LEE. THE FUCK IS RECOMPENSE!!” It was too late, Lee’s back disappeared through the crowd. Igor stared for a long moment as his world came crashing down around him. This damn job was all he had going for him. He was just months away from fulfilling the criteria set forth by his eccentric uncle who’d written up a bizarre will entitling him to the entire fortune. If he held a job for a whole year. Igor and Lee had worked together for months, and secured the highly coveted VIP bar position. Now it was all over. His fucking life supply of wealth was yanked from his fingertips. Good thing he had a back up plan. Granted, Igor never imagined he’d actually use the sinister shit, but it suddenly seemed like a good idea. His expression became strangely calm as he pulled a tiny vial from his inner vest pocket. Two droplets of the dark liquid in each glass. Picking up the tray, Igor delivered it himself to the nobles table; tonight was the final night the world would know.

Three cherries lined up for Alex, followed by a loud chime. Golden tokens poured out. “Nice.” A handsome man was standing beside the slot machine, smiling at the lucky results. “I can tell this isn’t your game though. I think you’re more of a dice man. Am I right?” His smile was warm and a hand extended to Alex’s. “Dodge Beckonsdale. I hope I’m not intruding?”

Meanwhile, the former bodyguard fled through the streets; the Kitty Cat’s glow growing dimmer and his footsteps louder as the glitz and crowds were behind him. His pace slowed and the man’s breathing evened out. Whoever that well-dressed youngster was with the knife, he was terrifying. A small white dog in the corner of his eye made the man stop and turn. The friendly little creature seemed to be with a fierce warrior-like person. Katana and everything.

“Can I pet your dog?”

If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster.

The rainbow lights flashed as Alex hit the jackpot. Golden coins spilled out of the machine, causing a grin to spread across Alex's face. He became aware of a man standing next to him. Turning, he saw the outstretched hand. Alex stood, grasping the man's hand. "Not at all. Name's Alex Snow." An employee hurried over, quickly filling up a briefcase with all of Alex's coins. "I'll take it." Alex seized the briefcase, noting its hefty weight.

Turning back to Dodge, Alex slid his free hand into his pocket. "You mentioned something about dice?" It certainly sounded a lot more interesting than slot machines. He'd just wanted some peace and quiet after the chaotic events earlier, but now he had the funds to roll higher. Raising a single eyebrow, he looked Dodge in the eyes. "I'm game. Though if you don't mind, I'll spend one round watching. After that..." Alex let the sentence go unfinished, challenging the man.

The vagabond was gaining confidence, and in any case, he was here to enjoy himself. Now he just needed to figure out how the rules worked. If he ended up losing all the money he'd made, oh well. It was all part of the fun, the constant risk that your earnings could disappear at a moment's notice. How far could he push his luck? Alex was itching to find out. "Lead the way Mr. Beckonsdale." Alex gestured magnanimously with his hand towards the gambling tables.

Amusement flickered on Dodge’s face before he bowed his head to the other’s charming implications. “Alex Snow, excellent.” He lifted his hand to point at a table just five meters away. It was like many around it; a twelve feet long rectangle with a complex pattern of gridlines and numerals marked on the green felt. Two men looked up from the table to see Alex. Both of them were dressed identically and seemed somewhat out of place. They seemed eager to play however, and raised their drinks to Mr. Snow and Mr. Beckonsdale. Upon joining them, Dodge nodded to the dealer.

two men

“Ah. Ready gentleman? The game is called Conditions. You will each have a roll with a six-sided die. Depending on where it lands will determine the chips gained or won, respectively. And let’s begin with you sir.” The dealer handed Dodge a single red die with white divets.

Dodge held it for a moment and smiled while closing his eyes. Inhaling, he tossed the single cube onto the green cloth. It bounced against the inner wall and came to a rolling stop on a yellow symbol; it’s upward-facing divets numbering four. A collective sigh could be heard. “Very good..” The dealer said in a song-like way, “, yellow yellow, safest fellow. And you sir..” with his stick, he pushed the die to one of the other men who grinned and raised his eyebrows to Dodge before he threw. It landed on a red nine, the cube’s digit featured a three. His head bowed and shoulders drooped while Mr. Becksondale and the other man laughed. They seemed quite pleased while one who rolled onto the red nine looked ill. The majority of the chips were slid towards him and he added them to his other stacks.

“Nine is fine. Yes indeed!” the dealer passed the die to the third player. The other dressed in a grey suit with a collarless white shirt. The one with sleepy eyes verses the sharper, darker eyed winner of the last round. The red block rolled and stopped on a black three, the number five faced upwards on the die. “Yeeeeaaahhh!!!” He cried, tossing his head back and grinning wide. “nnNN..” Alex would notice both Mr. Beckonsdale and the sharp-eyed man groaning. They were less then pleased and tossed three black chips from their piles towards the happy victor.

“Aaaaaand that’s the game! Very nice very nice!” The dealer bowed and stood to clap his hands.

Dodge turned to Alex and lifted his brows. “So. You in? The buy in’s about what you have there in that case.”

"Conditions" dice table
