Alex was struggling to stay conscious as Roy guided him towards the truck. He didn't remember climbing in, yet he was sitting in the passenger seat. Alex slipped into a delirious half sleep as Roy started driving, the lights and sirens of the city becoming a balm for his ears. The periodic penetration of light through his shut eyes by streetlights also became mesmerizing, and Alex's breathing slowed despite his pain. His peace was interrupted with the sound of the truck's rusty brakes squealing. Alex groaned and looked over at Roy, wondering what was going on. He vaguely made out someone standing next to the truck. Were they wearing a police uniform? Alex couldn't tell just from the man's silhouette. Roy had started engaging him in conversation, and Alex decided he could handle it. He slipped back into his state of half-consciousness with a sigh, and felt a slow weight comfort him. Spoiler: click to toggle Alex gasped, bolting up from his sitting position, only to immediately regret moving his leg. He lay back, clenching his fist through the wave of pain. It seemed like a lifetime until the pain dispersed, and Alex let out his pent up breath. He tried to calm himself with deep breaths, but couldn't stop the cold sweat running down his face and neck. He slowly turned to look back, and sighed as he saw that the city was out of sight. At least that ordeal was over. Alex's hands shook badly, and he balled them up, trying to control them. He felt his throat tightening, but persistently fought against it. He tensed up his body like a steel rope, fighting the tears. The tension exited like air from a popped balloon as Alex sagged in the seat. Tears rolled down his face, a veritable waterfall. Immense pressure seemed to squeeze his temples, and Alex lowered his head while putting one hand over his face. The hand was quickly soaked with saltwater. |

Roy looked at Alex in the reflection of his mirror and sighed seeing his poor condition. He looked him over, and he didn't seem to be doing well. Roy wasn't accustomed to caring for those he put through his plans. Most of the men were like him. Not that great, and probably had it coming. Still he normally managed to summon up a little bit of concern, if only from a bussiness standpoint. But looking Alex, a guy who couldn't imagine had done anything to deserve this, who had taken a literal bullet for him. He felt a great deal of sorrow, he wasn't accostumed to that. So he wasn't sure what to say. But after a while he spoke awkwardly. "Hey man are you, are you alright? You need anything?" Roy's voice cut through the emotions, and Alex composed himself. Ten seconds went by. Twenty. Finally, Alex looked up, momentarily steady. "I'm..." He didn't know what to say. Glancing down again, he pressed his fingertips together. "No. I'm not." Roy bit his lip not sure what to do. They had gotten out of town that was just something that had to be done. But were they far enough away that they could risk stopping? He wasn't sure. Normally he wouldn't risk it. But he couldn't look at Alex without his heart sinking lower and lower. He pulled over to the side of the road and looked around. There was no one around. He hoped it would be ok...Roy got out of the car and opened the back seat so he could reach Alex. The one thing he hadn't brought was medical supplies. He had been more focused on just escaping and he cursed himself for his lack of foresight. But he would do what he could. "Hey man if your in really rough shape...I think I could try to cauterize the wound. Do you think we should try?" More pain, wonderful. He knew however that it would come back to bite him if he refused. "Yeah...good idea." In his head, he still harbors a vague suspicion of Roy's intentions, but he didn't have anyone else to turn to. So be it. Roy nodded his head and got back in the car driving off road for a bit. The truck was in good shape but it wasn't made for all terrains by any means. Still they should be able to get out of sight of the main road. Roy parked it behind some trees and got out again speaking to John. "John you can start a fire without anyone seeing it right? Good ol' hobbo trick I'm sure." The man responded with a smile as he exited the car. "Sure thing. For what your paying me Sir, I'd find a way to burn down city hall without anyone noticing." Roy nodded and started looking for something metal while John got to work. He didn't have to look long before he found a tire iron and a hammer. This would have to work...it wasn't ideal but it would have to do. John got to work making sure the fire was hidden, and then Roy came over. A normal fire didn't get the kind of heat that he would need, at least not nearly fast enough. But he should be able to create a small space in the fire, in order to mirror a furnace. John had gathered some supplies for it and Roy did as well. He let Alex stay in the truck, he shouldn't be moving right now. Once they had their materials ready Roy started to place them where they needed to go. Roy looked over at John and asked him for the knife he had on his hip. He took some of the logs that they found and placed the knife blade on them, striking it with the back of his hammer to split them. He set John to start making some mud, throwing him a bottle of water. Once all of that was done Roy tore off pieces of cloth from his sweater and started to tie things together. After a few moments he had built himself a makeshift furnace. Various log pieaces had been strung together in a kind of teepee looking construct, small and compact with the kindling as well as some gas and larger peices of wood in the center. He applies the mud to the inside of the furnace so that the would wouldn't burn right away and light the fire. He would add gas to it periodically and more fuel. He set the tire iron in the center and close off entrance with another pieces of wood. It didn't work fully, but it would at least keep the heat in. Getting a rock from nearby he sat and waited until the iron was hot. Luckily it wasn't steal or they wouldn't have a hope of pulling this off. Soon enough as he pulled out the metal with a gloved hand, the iron tip was shinning bright orange. And he took the hammer and started to pound the end in to a smooth circle. The hammer came down softly, most people thought that one just crashed it down on the mettle. But it was more about smooth fluid movements. Everytime he hit the iron he let the hammer bounce back up, without resisting the movement. Bringing it down again and repeating the process. Soft sharp tings rang throughout the area. And soon it was done. He had forged what he would. Roy wiped the sweat off his brow. And put the iron back in. His disguise was starting to get a little itchy. So he took it off and put on a hat to hide his bald head. He was a little vain it seemed. He left the sweat pants and hoodie on for now. He would change in to a suit when they were further away. He took out the iron it was hot, and came over to Alex. "This is gonna hurt but if your lucky you should be able to pass out from the pain. Hopefully by then we should have some drugs ready for you." Roy put up a weak smile as John took off the bandage. "I'll do it on three ok? Turn your head." Roy spoke to Alex, and the very moment that he did without warning Roy plunged the hot iron on to his bleeding wound, with a sickening hiss and the strangely sweet smell of burning flesh. |

Alex closed his eyes weakly, listening to the truck rumble on the dirt. The brakes squealed, a spray of dust emerging from underneath the tires. Alex heard the doors open, and Roy's voice. He couldn't make out the words, and Alex felt himself drifting off. Pulling himself up, Alex shook his head vigorously. I won't fall asleep. I can't...I can't deal with those dreams. Alex huddled up inside the truck, desperately trying to ward off the fatigue. Roy's footsteps crunched, walking back toward the truck. Looking towards him, Alex saw the glowing hot iron in his hand. He felt his throat tighten in fear, and wanted to run as far as he could from that thing, not that he could stand, let alone run right now. "This is gonna hurt, but if you're lucky you should be able to pass out from the pain." It took Alex a few seconds to register the words, and his eyes widened slightly when they processed. No way, I'm not going back to those nightmares. I'm not passing out. I won't. I won't. I won't. "I'll do it on three." Alex nodded, his body shaking like a leaf. Turning his head, he imagined the hot iron burning through his leg, waiting for Roy to start counting. Pain. Terrible pain. Alex was screaming, yet he couldn't hear a thing. All he could concentrate on was the terrible, horrible heat burning into his leg. I WON'T PASS OUT! I WON'T PASS OUT! The vagabond felt his flesh pop and sizzle from the heat, vomit rising up his throat. I...won't...pass...out. Arching his back, Alex felt his whole body ache. His screaming had subsided into groaning and grinding teeth, as Alex stubbornly refused to lose consciousness. Unbeknownst to Alex, smoke was rising from his leg, and the flesh had darkened. The blood flow was slowing, but the deep burn pain persisted. He felt his vision narrow and darken, his body desiring to slip into a state of unconsciousness. Rghhhhhh. Alex forced himself to stay awake, enduring every bit of the pain. The vagabond remained conscious for the entire procedure. |

Roy let out a small whistle. He was impressed that Alex had managed to not pass out throughout this whole process. But that was probably a bad thing if he was being honest. He was sure that he was in excrutiating pain. Roy threw the hot iron aside as John took care of putting out the fire. He wrapped the wound in some more cloth that he tore from the sweater he had been wearing. It probably wasn't medically sterile but it would have to. "I'm pretty impressed you didn't pass out to be honest. But I'm not sure that was such a great idea. Still. The bleeding is stopped and as long as you get the burns treated at some point you shouldn't suffer any infections." Roy got back in to the car John taking the passenger seat once more and got back on to the road continuing their long drive. He was positive that Alex was in horrible horrible pain right now. There might be one other thing he could do for him. "Hey Alex. What do you say we hit up a bar?" Roy smiled as he proposed such a casual question to such a greviously wounded man. Still it was pretty fitting. They could end this whole terrible ordeal over what they had started it with. A drink. Edited by Roy, Dec 17 2017, 02:48 AM.

Alex panted, barely aware of his surroundings, but still conscious. The bone deep pain in his leg had subsided to a severe throbbing, and his breath shuddered as he attempted to regain his composure. The vagabond glanced up at Roy's words, and would've laughed if he had the energy. It was better than the alternative. Alex would've said it out loud, but his throat was hoarse from his screams. His leg continued to throb, and Alex laid back, trying to find some sort of slightly comfortable way to sit. His head pounded right along with it, causing Alex to groan. A bar? In my condition? That's the worst idea I've heard all day. Smiling faintly, Alex nodded to Roy, before laying his head back and closing his eyes to try to cope with the pain. Without even realizing, the vagabond passed out. His boots echoed on the floor. A dark tunnel. At the very end, Alex saw a small square of light. Walking towards it, Alex cracked his neck. Click, clack, click, clack. The square didn't seem to be getting any closer. Alex felt a hand on his back, pushing him. Stumbling, Alex regained his balance, the square inches from his face. It was still blinding white, with no hint as to what was beyond. Looking back, Alex saw a pair of ice blue eyes glowing, before they disappeared without a trace. Alex stepped through the square into an arena full of cheering spectators. Looking around, Alex's gaze settled on the man opposite him in the ring. Roy. |

Roy glanced at Alex as he mentioned the bar and smirked. He said yes, but he could tell he thought the idea was pretty ridiculous. In all fairness it was, but he really couldn't afford to be taking him to a hospital at this point. With officials and the like. So to ease his pain he'd probably just pick up a bottle and he could try drinking it in the car. Soon though he would have to pull over and hand this car over to John, he couldn't very well keep it forever... As Roy thought about this his eyes picked up the first few buildings of a new town. He didn't want to risk going in to a bar himself but he could always send John... Roy pulled over near a bar and sent John in with some money for booze, as well as a much larger stack of cash for something else too. He pulled away and drove out of town after this and found a nice secluded spot to park. Roy noticed that Alex was still passed out and didn't bother waking him, he just started up another smoke and waited. After about two hours John pulled up at the side of the road in a blue battered car, it was old but it looked like it would work. "All went well?" Roy called out to him. He just nodded and smiled as he got out of the car. Roy stepped out of his truck and caught the keys that were thrown to him. From here John would make his way back to the city, and he and Alex would use this car to get the hell out of dodge. Roy tapped Alex' shoulder after he grabbed the bottle that John had bought them as well. When he woke up Roy would hand him the bottle and help him to the car. "Drink up Mate. I'm afraid the hospital's too risky so we can't get any painkiller's but this should be better than nothing. We have to get you in a new car. We'll drive the next few days until we are safe. I know that sounds aweful but on the bright side, we can...I don't know...get some food and get to know eachother...if your interested haha..." Roy grinned and rubbed the back of his shaved head. He wasn't used to trying to make friends. But Alex had already gotten shot for him and...well. He had to start somewhere right? Edited by Roy, Dec 31 2017, 12:30 AM.

Alex groaned, opening his eyes at Roy's insistent tapping. Still half-asleep, he missed most of what Roy said, but groggily held the bottle. Alcohol? Guess it's better than nothing. Alex took a swig, the taste waking him up. As his wits returned, Alex's eyes widened, remembering the bar from earlier. He spat it all out, coughing at the return journey. Handing the bottle back to Roy, Alex leaned heavily on the man's shoulder. "Sorry, but I...I can't drink. Not anymore. Fuck." The pain in Alex's leg surged in a tidal wave, and Alex slumped, putting almost his full weight on Roy. Roy helped him inside the car, slamming the door shut. The engine sputtered to life, clearly having seen better days. They slowly pulled away, back on the road. Alex looked at Roy through the fatigue, though feeling a little better after his nap. Why did you help me like this Roy? You could have just as easily left me on my own. Peering into Roy's eyes, Alex saw it there. A desire for change, redemption. Alex didn't know what to feel at that moment. Conflicting approval and regret struggled against one another, neither reigning supreme. I can't be what you need Roy. You're looking for light, but you'll find nothing in me. Only an empty void. "Roy...when I'm able to stand on my own, I need to leave. I'm too dangerous to stick around. I..." Breathing deeply, Alex committed to his next words. "I have a second half, a demon, whatever you want to call it. When he takes over...murder. Chaos. I can't stop him." It felt so good to come clean to another human being. He might be making a huge mistake telling Roy, but the vagabond didn't care. For the sake of his sanity, he needed to share this with someone, anyone. "I know you probably have questions, and we can talk more about it later. For now, I just want to say...thank you. For getting me out of there alive." Grabbing his pack from between his legs, Alex dug inside until he found what he needed. Clicking the pen, he scribbled quickly, tearing the page out of the notepad. Reaching out, he offered it to Roy. "You ever need me...just call." A feeling of acceptance washed throughout Alex. I don't need redemption. All I want is someone who...understands. The car faded into the night, carrying the two men with it. |
