Theme Song: Rivers in the Desert

"or at least, I should go, since I am a healer. I can take care of them in case of injuries." Anna offered.

"While that is true, you are also no fighter, so I should probably go with you..but then everybody might as well go. But I don't think it was that serious, we could wait on Nank's message, his phone is still in service." Stella supplied.

Jackson looked like he wanted to weight in on the discussion, but before he could say anything, there was a loud and sudden explosion on one side of the building. It didn't stop there as one by one starting from the first floor and moving upward, fire and bombs exploded in sequences which gradually eroded upward to cover the entire building. Glasses and debris broke off and fallen down upon the event participants down below, there was suddenly the sound of screaming and shouting as a couple of people being crushed by the fallen drywall. Clouds of dust fly out everywhere and the sound of crying could be heard, it started a widespread panic among the population as people started to move away from the area.

Shocked and awed at what was happening, Stella took out her phone and was about to call for an ambulance. But before she would finish dialing the number, yet another explosion happened, this time, on the ground closer to where they were standing.

The loud sounds of the eruption could be heard as something blow up on the street, a violent and destructive shattering sound happened somewhere near the ground and immediately followed by a shock wave across the street.

"Get Down!!!" Jackson shouted and pushed down both Anna and Stella with him, aura flaring around him as all three dropped to the ground as the sound of gunshot shoot through the air.

Multiple civilians had been hurt by the sudden detonation, the rest are panicking and started to move about, making organizing a rescue effort that much harder. What is worst, trampling is a real concern now.

Stella narrowed her eyes and struggled out from underneath Jackson, she stood up and yelled angrily. "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!" She pushed Jackson to the side, and was about to head over to where the explosion took place, but she was stopped by a hand on her arm. She violently turned around and shouted "LET ME GO!! I CAN'T STAND THIS! Someone is trying to snipe..." her words were cut off mid-sentence, she froze in her place at the sight of red everywhere.

Jackson grinds on his teeth as he tried to swallow blood leaking through his mouth. It had looked like multiple bullets wound had penetrated his body and he was leaking blood. Jackson closed his eyes and tried to swallow and trying to breathe before speaking to the still frozen up Stella again. "You don't know when the next bomb is going to explode...rushing in wouldn't help.."he coughed violently, one hand covered over his mouth as blood leaked over the hand, it looked like there might have been internal wounds.

At that moment all Stella would see was red everywhere, she didn't even have the energy to feel angry that someone dared to shot at HER TEAMMATES. She couldn't even feel rage now as her blood runs cold at the thought that she might lose someone again, and that after establishing bonds that she might be alone once again. The fear gripped at her heart, making her unable to move, she was stunned and disregarded the obvious dangerous situation that they were in, she froze in her place and stood there like a piece of wood.

Jackson lifted up a hand and Anna struggled to stand up from under his arms.

She struggled to help Jackson into a sitting position, "Put pressure on your wounds, I am going to heal you right now..." aura embraced her as she was preparing for her healing hatsu. Just then, a sudden freezing cold feel swiped over Stella forcing her to snap out of her stunning state and she moved by pure instinct, picking by both Jackson and Anna by their collars and dragged them away. But it was still too slow when the gunshot was heard again, she bite down hard on her lower lips. Even without turning back to check, she knew that they got hit, but she couldn't stop now, she had to get away from the sniper's field of vision. The sound of bullets followed them and her chest heaving harshly as she managed to get both of her teammates behind a drywall, only then could she turned to check on their status.

Anna's "emergency room" was activated, the sound of gunfire stopped momentarily. But Stella knew that it wasn't because the shooter give up, but that they were relocating. Stella might down on her lips, she was afraid on multiple levels, but she knew what she had to do. Against the protesting shout of Anna, Stella jumped over the drywall, sounds gunshot immediately followed her as she zigzagged to the other side. She had to draw the gunner's attention away from them, that means she had to confront the unknown. Stella knew that with her current stats, it was unlikely she could fight the attacker head on, she might die from this confrontation, but she had no choice, and the gunner left her no time to reconsider. Her gaze followed the projectile of the bullets and she threw a steel seed towards that location. In the next instant her hatsu activated, teleporting her directly into the shooter's path, she stared down on the barrel of the gun and into the cold white mask of the shooter in front of her.

I know you...you were the one from the desert...!!

Shit!!! Before she could do anything, she rolled and dodged to the side, narrowing missing a bullet to her head. Now that she was in front of the shooter, he was not holding back with the bullets at all.

Stella backed away and into a nearby building, the store was empty from when the occupants evacuated from the explosion. Stella hidden behind a divider, all senses were on high alert as she was trying to figure out where the shooter was now. The shooter might have lost the sight of her, but the vice versa was also true. Not knowing where her enemy was at the moment gave the shooter the upper hand, since he was the one outclassing her in the arsenal. When Stella first teleported, she had the element of surprise on her side so the shooter's reaction speed was lagging for a beat, but as he collected his calm, there was no way she could have dodged a flying bullet her way now. But she couldn't just run away either, since she had the distinct feeling that the shooter would be chasing after Anna and Jackson if he thought that she fled already. She was the living bait, and she has to play her part.

But why...why was he here?! What was he doing here? Twice now, that I run into him, is this just a coincident? Or was he actually after me..?! That can't be, I'm an archeological hunter, we don't make enemies!!

Stella was shaking from fear behind the divider, she did not dare to breath harder than she had to, and she was listening to any sound coming and trying to pick up clues from the chaos happening outside. That was when the beeping sound of a text reached her phone, her heart almost skipped a beat. She quickly pulled up her phone and was going to turn it off for fear that the ringtone might give away her position, but she glanced at the brief message across the top of the home screen.

From Nank:

-Someone was trying to kill Ben in the hotel. He turned off his phone to avoid being detected, he's hidden away now and I am coming back. Where are you guys? Be careful, Ben said that the attackers appear to be targeting hunters and may attack anyone in their way.-

Stella stared at her phone, thoughts crossed her mind in lightning speed, she can't text him back here not when she didn't even know where the enemy was. But she couldn't help herself.

Stella:
-Meet me at X9236, Y3708-

She managed to hit "send" just as the corner of her vision caught a movement to the side, and without any time to think, she teleported out. Biting her lips as a bullet went through her shoulder as the sound of gunshot fill the air, had she hesitant for just a second it would go through her heart and be game over for her. As soon as her feet hit the ground, she took off sprinting toward that location. She didn't have to check and she already knew that the gunman was chasing after her.

Nank was the better fighter of the group, as much as it hurt her pride to admit, by herself, she stood no chance against the gunman and she had to regroup with her teammate. "Beep!"

Nank:
-Do not come here! There are enemies here! Turn back now!-

Stella did not have the time to check the text and missed the warning from Nank, she arrived at the location only to be greeted by the sight of not one, but multiple people in black clothes and masks. They all were slightly different looking masks but it was clear that they were a group. Nank was among them as he tried to fight them off. His emission and enhancement hatsu made him quite the dangerous target to corner and for the minute he was keeping the enemies at bay. He seemed to have noticed Stella and decided to run towards the other direction, and just then, one of the blackcloth threw something toward him on the ground and in the next second, black smoke surrounded the area, Nank would not be able to see. The surrounding blackcloth backed away and a few of them raised their arms, they have something in their hands.

From her position, Stella realized that they were flame bombs and that realization turned her blood cold. Without thinking, she threw another steel seed towards the mixed and teleport herself there. It was sheer luck that she was not caught by Nank's hatsu as he sent out a shockwave made with pure aura, which pushed the smoke along with the nearest blackcloth aside. She landed in front of him and activated her core flower hatsu in a heartbeat, and throw any flame bombs reaching her sphere right back at them. The flame bomb managed to keep the front line blackcloth busy for a bit, but the backline blackclothes pulled out the guns and started to shoot at them.

Stella had never been tested like this before, normally changing bullet's trajectory would be outside of her capacity, but here, as adrenaline rushed over here and facing life or death scenario, she was magically intercepting the bullets with her sphere, but all she could do was just to drop the bullets to the ground. That simple actions took every last bit of her concentration, there was no way that she could have kept this up, and the blackclothes were moving toward them steadily. From behind some of the blackcloth, she saw some movement, and Stella's heart sunk as she saw some of them carrying a flamethrower and walking toward them. She knew that this was the end for them, she had to do something, but her mind came out blank, there wasn't anything she could have done. She had nothing in her sleeves against a situation like this. But the choice was not up to her, she felt herself being picked up from behind and suddenly being throw through the air like a projectile, she glanced back in mid-air and saw the last moment of Nank, as he activated some kind of self-detonation hatsu which caught the surrounding blackclothes off guard.

Theme Song: Rivers in the Desert

It didn't really hit her on what was happening until she landed on the ground with a loud thump, if she wasn't so used to cover herself with aura for protection at all time, the drop itself might have killed her. The world of pain surrounded her as she felt her bones cracked beneath her own weight, she was crumbling on the ground unable to move even an inch. But what hurt her more was the thought on what she just witnessed. It paralyzed her with heartbreaking pain, it made her see white, it made breathing air painful and it made her blood run cold. Her mind was blank and she was unable to process on what had just happened, and she was shaking like a leaf in the wind. The pain, not only from the body suffering from a gunshot wound, exhaustion from overusing her hatsu, the unprepared dropped from the sky but the thought of losing someone so important once again. It felt like she was back into the ocean again, struggling against the tides, trying her hardest not to drown.

Not again...I....I can't lose someone again...I already have no one to begin with...please...dear lord, I lost everybody to the plague, I can't afford losing anyone else again...

Stella sucks in a cold breath and struggled to put herself up, she slapped herself hard across her face leaving a burning red mark, and internally yelled at herself to calm down. She bites back her tears and tried to activate her hatsu again, trying to teleport herself back to the previous location.

Maybe there was still hope? Maybe, just maybe, that wasn't a self-destruction attack and the could be still alive?

She tried to blink away the tears that rush down her face and stared at the image ahead...waiting for the familiar sense of warping to happen, but nothing happened. She was still there standing on the ground at where she was, unmoved from her previous location. She blinked, but nothing changed, she was still there at her previous location. The teleportation hatsu didn't work and she was still here standing like an idiot! That was when she remembered that her seed hatsu was a one-way trip, she couldn't teleport back to the same marker again without a reset. Even if it wasn't a one-way trip, it was doubtful if she even has enough energy to use hatsu now.

Stella felt like she was unable to breathe, but she told herself to calm down. If she had a breakdown now, it would have helped no one, and any chance of saving Nank would have been forfeited. She struggled desperately to move forward, she was trying to go back to that location by foot, but she was slow and stumbling all over the place. She swallowed hiccups as she walked and cried silently until she reached the spot a good 10 minutes or so after the fact. The sight that greeted her eyes made her legs go weak and she crushed down to the ground.

There was a large hole in the ground in front of her, the dust had already settled, everything was covered with a layer of debris. But it was not hard to tell what had happened here. There were some dead bodies lying around, some portions of the body were blown away, leaving dried blood on the ground. Stella forced herself to stand up and go see the hole.

Until I saw the corpse myself, there's still a chance....

A silly thought that she couldn't even sell to herself, but she hangs on to that silly idea and it brought her forward to the edge of the hole. There was no way that Nank could have survived that, but she couldn't bring herself to face the reality either.

Upon the sight of what was left of Nank she quickly coward back and throw up to the side, her mind went blank and she blacked out.

When she woke up again, she was in what looked like a hospital setting. For a moment she thought that it was all a dream, and at that thought, she immediately wanted to call her teammates again, she wanted to see them for herself and confirmed that it was all just a crazy nightmare. She needed to know that in reality, nothing happened, she didn't want to go see some kind of tournament, she just needed her team to be alive and well. She picked up the ivy needles from her arms and tried to get out of the room. When her feet touched the ground she draw back in pain, it felt like her whole body was burning up. But she bit down on her lips and struggle forward and out of the room.

The sound of moaning greet her, she realized that she was indeed in a hospital and it looked like the hospital was currently running out of staff from treating the various survivors of the attack. The hallway was filled with patients waiting around, some were lying on the ground receiving treatment from nurses. The big hallway and was filled with stench in the air. The TV was on and it was broadcasting news coverage of the attack, the anchor was saying that they didn't know what or who lead the attack or for what reason. The only thing was known was that the building that initially blew up was hosting some kind of confidential meeting by a group of professional hunters. Upon the building being blown up, reinforcement was immediately dispatched, but all hunters send to the scene or any hunter in the immediate vicinity, in fact, was met with armed resistant. The civilians were better off and were mostly left alone, but licensed hunters were met with brutal hostility.

The broadcast ended with a list of confirmed dead and Stella stared at the screen in disbelief as the names rolled up.

....
Teresa Anna Washington
.....
Jackson Hill
.....
Nank Yaguto
....

There was the sound of someone crushed down to the floor, maybe it was her. Then, she received a text from Ben and it read.

-Are you awake?-

-The End-

That was unsettling, heartbreaking, and incredible. The entire piece was riveting; the descriptions only serving to make the action so much more believable. I should have seen this coming, but I didn’t. When Jackson was struck, it was so well done in it’s graphic, raw, abruptness…it will haunt me for a long time. Anna’s injuries were less gruesome, giving us false hope while Nank’s violent sacrifice was pure horror. I absolutely loved this. Stella’s emotions were brilliantly portrayed here, and it was breathtaking to experience the chaos alongside her. Oh man when her PHONE WENT OFF? You did an exquisite job setting things up with such a lighthearted scenario, going into details and painting a vivid picture of Stella’s team members, only to slaughter them all in a sickeningly unimportant way. My hat is off to you. This solo is being bookmarked as an example of great storytelling; for soloists and narrators alike.
