Stella's Archaeological Team

It was a cool and clear day in the middle of September, just before the leaves started to fall. Stella and her archeological team of hunters, consisted of Ann, Jackson, Ben, Nank and Stella herself had just finished their last expedition in Mt. Yoton. Since their first mission in the Eslaren region, because the team had worked so well together, good enough that they started to contact each other with new potential expedition infos. To the extent that some staffs in Hunter's Association had started to refer to them as a team, usually if one of them got an archeological mission, they would invite the others and they would all go on the mission together. It had been almost a year since they first met in the caving area of Eslaren, and having just completed their latest expedition, although they didn't find anything too valuable this time around, it was still quite meaning for considering that it was almost their anniversary as an unofficial team. It was all very convenient too, after just having cleared the big and longtime mission, there was a vacancy in everyone's schedule and there was a long weekend coming up too.

In the upcoming long weekend, there was an annual celebration tournament held in the York Shin City, where amateur hunters could take part and compete for a grand prize. It wasn't just the tournament either, for three consecutive days celebration events will be held around the area. There will be food vendors all along the streets around the Green Forest Park, various rare items for sale or for auction, parades, stage shows, and even fireworks in the evening. It was a popular event for the locals and having missed the last two events, Stella basically nagged the team non-stopped (with text messages, online PMs and occasionally phone calls) until the team had agreed to all go see the tournament with her. Stella was the type to wanted to try out new things, and she would have wanted to participate in the tournament herself too (and get a shot at that mysterious grand prize!), but it was such a rare occasion that all of them had time-off at the same time, that she wanted to spend time with them instead of participating in the ring. It was a rare opportunity to spend time with them outside of a mission and outside of work, it felt like they were almost close friends and just hanging out, at least Stella hoped that she wasn't the only one who thinks that way.

Stella was strangely excited about the whole thing, she even told the team that the date that they came together as a team was something worth celebrating, despite how embarrassed she felt about the whole notion. In her mind, this might have been the longest bond that she had made ever since reaching landing on the hunter's world. Having lost the Yatsu clan and arriving in the hunter's world, and knowing no one, this new team really made her felt like she belonged somewhere, as if a grass growing roots deeper into the ground and establishing a home here.

Sunday, the team arrived at York Shin City by train and got off at the train station. Stella all but jumped down, and looked around excitedly at all of the people nearby, and immediately tried to rush towards the nearest street food vendor. Nank picked her up by her jacket's collar and dragged her back to the group. The five of them stood in a circle waiting for Ben to go over today's schedule.

Ben, pulled out a notebook from his bag and started going over the city's map with them, having researched on the more popular activities of the event, their usual respective wait time and purchased tickets ahead of time, he briefly provided a rundown of a proposal of today's activity and asked if anyone had any other suggestions or if there's something they would like to do.

Anna stood next to Jackson and said that she would really like to go see the fish market, she was considering adding a few new additions to her home aquarium, and asked if anyone would like to come with her. Jackson and Nank both said that they would like to check out the wildlife exhibit. But before Jackson could finish his sentence, he got an ice cold chilling stare and a pinch from Anna, and quickly finishing the last part of the sentence to "Of course! I would love to go see the fish market with you! You know koi is my favorite type of fish of all time! Big fan! Big fan!"he turned to Nank and was silently conveying messages to the taller man with his stares alone. Nank was silent for a bit, but in the end turned down the invitation to the fish market and opted to wander the streets alone. Stella bit the inside of her cheek silently, and was feeling a bit sad at the notion that the team wouldn't be hanging out together, after all, she was really looking forward to the event and the team building time.

Nank nodded to the rest of the team and told them to be careful of the thieves now that the area was filled with people and looked like he was about to set out. But before he can leave the group, he was stopped by Ben who all but ordered that they all check into the hotel first. Since they were staying in the city for 3 days, they should at least have the luggage issue taken care of.

"I can't believe that I have to babysit you guys like this...you are all licensed hunters, surely you know what should be the first step, what were you guys doing when you were on a mission alone anyway? Do you just leave the luggage on the street or what?" Ben quietly complain to the group.

"I don't have much luggage anyway, so I take them as I go." Nank

"Sorry, I got carried away."
Anna

What was I doing with my luggage....? Thought Stella as she silently asked herself

Ben stared at the group in disbelief. "Are..are you guys serious?! Is this what I can expect from the new hunter generation?!" He all but yelled at them.

"I do check in first..." Jackson

"THANK YOU SIR!!!" Ben yelled, finally, someone with some senses. "Anyway! We are checking in first, and that's that, besides, I already told the front desk that we are coming, so..." Ben grumbled quietly before leading the way.

They dropped off their luggage in the hotel lobby, some staff is taking the luggage away.

Stella stepped out of the hotel front door and dusk off her sleeves, she turned around and asked the team if they wanted to do something together. Ben took in a large yawn and shook his head, having finished his brunch on the train, he was going back to the hotel room to catch a nap before meeting them for the evening's show.

"Well, that's lame..." Stella said sternly. "It is a once per year event and you are just going to sleep it away?" Stella asked in a clear challenging tone.

"Well...to quote Jackson, I do what I want." Ben answered, not really taking the bite.

Stella shook her head and turned to look at the others. "You too both wanted to go to see the fish market? And you want to visit the exhibit?"

"Want is a very strong wor..." Jackson sucked in a cold breath mid-sentence, his body was partially blocking Anna, who poked her head out from behind him and smiled sweetly towards Stella. "Yes~ Jackson always loved Koi fish, he was even kind enough to offer to take care of my fishes for me when I am away. Isn't that right Jackie?" She smiled sweetly and asked.

"...right..." Jackson

Stella was sensing some vibe coming from the two and decided to stay clear and away, she turned to Nank "What about you? Do you want to visit the street vendors together? I saw some weapon shops back that way, they even have those cool looking expedition tools and weird looking vases." asked Stella. To which the taller guy nodded.

"Well, that settles it! You are all adults, take care and we will see each other in the afternoon, closer to the show time." Ben took a large yawn and heading back to the hotel with a wave of a hand.

Stella waved to Anna and Jackson and about to leave the area with Nank, before noticing that Nank was just standing there unmoved, he was looking back at the hotel.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"....did you hear something?" Nank asked.

"Not really?"

"...strange...I thought I heard someone mention my name..."

"Anna, Jackson and Ben all left before us, maybe it was the hotel staff?" Stella asked

Nank shook his head. "...nevermind, it was probably nothing, I haven't returned to the city for a long time now, I'm probably just not used to be around many people nearby. It was good that you offered to come along, I wouldn't know what to do if I am by myself."

Stella smiled and answered. "Not at all! I'm exactly the same way, I'm glad that you come along too, this way at least I won't be the only one acting weird." She pulled out the map that she got from Ben. "There's still some time and there's so many places that I want to see, I actually thought about getting an apartment in York Shin before, didn't work out. Anyway, how about we go here first?" She pointed to a spot, and Nank nodded.

They went to the marketplace, which was booming with life. All around the street, there were many vendors showing off various items for sale. The place was packed with people and noises, the sound of bargaining, chatting and laughter filled the air. Stella went ahead and sampled quite a few of the food items, it was strange, despite York Shin being the metropolis city, there was quite the variety of cultural food going around. Nank was more interested in the small merchandise that they had for show, there was even some performance with common beasts and snake enchanting, which Stella never thought that they would find in York Shin. A few hours in, they managed to bump into Anna and Jackson. Since it was about time for the first tournament, the four went to see the first round of matches and followed by a visit to the ramen shop together.

.....

"So, what did you guys think about the tournament?" Anna asked them while they waited for the noodles. "And what are you guys having?" She looked over Jackson's shoulder and asked curiously.

"Ahhh....It as such a hard choice. I usually go for the chef's special, but I am kind of afraid to try out new things. What if it was really bad? What if I don't like it? I don't want to force myself to eat things that I don't like, but I also don't want to waste food either." Stella put the menu down on the table in front of her. She was sitting on Anna's left beside Nank, and Jackson was sitting on Anna's right.

"So what did you get anyway?" Jackson asked.

"Hm...I ended up ordering soy ramen, it was a favorite of mine and also very hard to mess up. I never tried this shop before so I didn't want to risk it...one day, one day I will try the new items, in fact, I will aim to try out all of the items!" Stella answered.

"Wow wow, slow down tiger, this isn't a competition. Maybe you try one and decided to never go back to this shop again?" at the cold stare of the shop's owner, Jackson swallowed his words and changed topics. "Me? I picked the spiciest item on the menu, I would like to see the owner's face when I eat the whole thing, oh...you can't possibly finish it, it was the hellfire level! My ass...telling a professional hunter that he couldn't have something, what a fool." Jackson mumbled to himself.

Anna chuckled at that. "Really Jackie? I can't wait to see your face when you try out that item. I have the miso flavor one, I heard it was really good. And also I can't help but noticed that none of you answered my question about the match..." Anna's tone dropped down a little as she looked at the team.

Stella was avoiding her gaze and picked up her menu again, pretending to thought over a second order. "I kind of want the fried chicken as well...also hard to mess up."

"I didn't even order ramen...I had the beef special." Nank supplied helpfully.

"Seriously? We are in a ramen shop, and you didn't order Ramen..? What are you?" Jackson bickered back.

"I just want to eat some solid food, is that so wrong?" Nank answered.

Anna coughed into her hands.

"Right...to answer your previous question Anna...the reason that none of us said anything was because..." Nank frowned, trying to go over the words in his own head, he was already not the chatting type, but he was trying his hardest to go over his shells to better fit in and cooperate with the team. Anna and Jackson had known each other for a long time so they were natural with each other even if no one spoke, Ben really didn't care what anyone thinks about anything, and Stella seemed to not know what the word "shy" or "personal boundary" means, so he was the only one constantly having his comfort zone challenged. They didn't know each other that long, despite knowing each other for almost a year, most of the time together was spent during missions, not a place for getting to know one another, and the rest being away doing their own stuff. He was trying to tiptoe around them and not to piss anyone off, but at the same time, he wanted to open up to them as well.

"It was because they sucked! Really really badly!" Jackson supplied very helpfully.

Stella titled up an eyebrow at that.

"Watch your language." Nank

"...should you be really saying things like that? Everyone started from ground zero, you were not born a fighter too. Remember how much you used to struggle." Anna chuckled to herself at her memories. "Personally, I think the effort itself is worth praising. Some of them tried really hard." Anna spoke softly to Jackson, despite her words she didn't sound all that upset, not really disagreeing with what he said.

"But...I kind of didn't like it when they picked the flashy moves just to try to show off. Remember that one guy, he could have won the match if he wasn't trying so hard to please the crowds. It was a match, for a prize, not an entertainment show. The prize itself should have been enough pull to work towards the goal." Stella titled her head and rested her chin on top of her hands.

"Not everyone was there for the prizes..." Nank interjected.

"Oh really?" Stella asked, "Then why are they there if not for the prize?"

"Some of them were there for the fame, they wanted exposure, they think it would help them in the future." Anna asked helpfully.

"Oh, I heard that one too, I think last year the disqualified some nen user pretending to be an amateur hunter, saying that it will help them find contract jobs later on." Jackson chipped in.

"It is hard to keep track of hunters and where they are, but an event like this draw in hunters every year. If you are not a hunter but wanted to meet one, going around the street this time of the year is the best way to do it." Anna

Stella raised an eyebrow, it was news to her. But before she could say anything else, their food arrived and they all enjoyed the food to various degrees with Jackson enjoyed his food the least.

.....

It was turning out to the quite a fun day for Stella, her attention was drawn away left and right by all the different things that were happening on the street. After tea time, they went out to the market again, walking under the different color street decoration, and looking around for more activities, that was when Jackson received a phone call from Ben.

Jackson narrowed his eyes and frowned at his phone. The Ringtone was ringing for only a few seconds before it ended, Jackson wasn't able to answer the call fast enough, and when he called back, no one answered. Stella shuffled closer and peer at the phone screen from beside Jackson, he was sending off a text to Ben -What was that all about? Did you need something?-

They waited for a bit but still no answer so they decided to forget about it and continue their way. The next stop was the petting zone, it was said that they even have horses for rent. That was when Jackson received a text back from Ben. -Someone is following me, be careful, I think they are aft...- the message cut off mid-sentence.

Stella was riding a pony and Anna was feeding a rabbit when they finally received the text back after a good half an hour delay, Nank frowned enough that his eyebrows looked like it was touching the eyes, and he immediately started to head back towards the hotel.

"Maybe it was a prank! He was trying to ruin our mood!" Jackson called out after him.

"He doesn't know combat! I need to check in with him! You three continue and stay close to each other!" Nank yelled back before disappearing into the crowds.

"You don't think he was actually in trouble do you?" Stella asked Jackson. "Can you call him again?"

"I already try that, he wasn't answering his phone..." Jackson tried again. "Great, and now his phone is turned off, that's wonderful."

"Maybe...he was really in trouble," Anna said hesitantly. "Should we go with Nank?"

How dare you write such an epic cliff hanger. This is pure excellence.
Stella’s team is a pleasure to read, not only are they interesting as individuals, but there are a few relationships within the group I’m already invested in. You do a fantastic group weaving them all together while keeping things focused on Stella. NOT TO MENTION YOUR FANTASTIC STORIES. You seem to be overflowing with unique ideas but you take your time with all of them, exploring things thoroughly but also maintaining a nice pace. As usual, great job.
