Legacy of Akinzu: The Sink

Posted Image

A plethora of sinkholes found at a considerable distance away from the majority of the other Ziggurat entrances. They appeared after a mysterious explosion from deep below the surface, that seemed to reverberate all the way into the ruins.

...

The Ziggurat and it's endless mysteries! However, now seemingly a shell of its former self, the temple is riddled with strange entrances, including what's been dubbed as 'The Sink'. Absolutely nothing is known about the Sink other than the obvious; multiple sink holes leading into an uncharted area of the Ziggurat. No information is known due to the nature of the sinkholes giving the Sink its name. If an adventurer chooses to use the Sink as a means of entering, they will find no obstacle other than the sand standing in their way, maybe. Creatures have been seen falling into one of the numerous sinks while other creatures have been seen scurrying out. Harmless lizards and insects so far, but there is still no telling if there's more down there, especially considering the varying sizes of some of the sinkholes.

The Sink's origin seems to be related to an explosion from within the depths of the Ziggurat, but the actual origins of the sinkholes is up to speculation. Did animals create the sinkholes before the explosion or did these sinkholes form around an ancient building related to the Ziggurat? The increasing number of question would likely be unsettling to cautious travelers, but probably not so for foolish travelers. After all, adventurers are seen purposefully jumping into a sinkhole yet never returning. Sometimes individuals are seen teaming up by jumping into the same sinkhole, but still no return.

A scream can sometimes be heard after jumping into a sinkholes, but nobody observing the sinkholes cares to mark the sinkhole responsible for the screaming. Entrepreneurs and gamblers from the makeshift bazaar sometimes visit the Sink from, bringing hopeful adventurers with them for peculiar reasons; the gamblers gamble on whether a scream will comes from one sinkhole or another while the entrepreneurs pay for information and the like. Only the gamblers have made any money from their creative exploits while the entrepreneurs continue to be disappointed.

He crashed into something soft instead. Another worm, he realized. Mizaki cursed to himself. If in this small stretch of the sinkhole he'd already found two, there would certainly be many more. At least this one is dealt with, he reckoned as the colossal worm twitched and died. Why didn't I see it?, the hunter asked himself, but the answer came immediately to him. His clothes were spattered with an oddly cool gooey liquid... the worm's haemolymph, he guessed. Mizaki was grossed out for a moment, and then decided he had more pressing issues to worry about. He'd clean himself later, for now he'd have to ignore the goo he was covered with.

Why could I, then, see the other worm?. He could see that both worms were similiar in size, and could spot no other difference between them. Were these worms of the same species, or were they different from one another, in spite of their apparent similiarities? Neither had posed any real threat to him, but could he assume all worm-like creatures he found were this fragile? Although they were intimidating, both had died quickly... a mundane ground worm would survive longer with similiar injuries, but a larger body could account for that. After all, there were few enough large insects - size matters in biological systems.

It also meant Mizaki was blind in the darkness, and therefore must be even more cautious. He could be surprised by more creatures that did not gave off a noticeable heat signature. As he looked around, he saw possible paths in every direction, including down and above, a few dozens meters around him. All of them were pitch black. Where am I, exactly?, he pondered. And where do I go?

Mizaki spotted large spheres in red, about one meter in diameter. He guessed those were worm eggs - or perhaps another creatures'. It would probably not be a bad idea to leave them alone... He started hearing rushed footsteps, seemingly towards him. He had no idea where to go, but he should go somewhere, fast. Footsteps? Who else could possibly be here?

He intended not to leave that question unanswered. In the darkness, it should not be hard to hide himself. He glanced at the worm eggs. Mizaki might leave a lot of worms angry if he went there and he had no idea if they were territorial or not, but if all worms were such as the ones he killed before, that ought not to be a problem. They weren't far away, and they were a good hiding spot. Moreover, he could use them as projectiles if he were forced to fight. He walked fast towards them, muffling his footsteps as best as he could.

Lance is normally diving head first but this time he did it literally doing a dive headfirst and all even putting his hand in front going straight down the sink hole pretty quickly. By the time he heard his companion yell that he should stop himself Lance's torso was already passed the ending of the hole and was about to drop into the cavern below but working quickly Lance used his legs and with great strength pushed them quite hard against the stone essentially coming to a full stop at the last possible second as his feet almost went over the edge. Hanging upside down arms dangling Lance lifted his head to look at the lady "What's the matter a little drop won't kill anyone?"

Letting his head drop he looked down into the dark abyss and snorted out his nose really hard removing sand that got in but as he snorted the sand tickled his nose Lance paused for a second and then he let out a big sneeze causing his legs to move on reflex as he sneezed and fell down into the darkness.

Falling now through the air Lance went over and flipped himself back but before he knew it he hit the ground already. This was not much of a drop so Lance simply looked up and said to the woman "If you drop straight down I can catch you it's not a far drop." Lance held his arms out ready to catch her whenever she decided to jump.

Mizaki's heat signature would be well hidden among the meter large worm eggs in combination with the dead worm's cool liquid already coating most of Mizaki's clothing. Even the greatest heat-seeing technology of today's time would be unable to sense Mizaki's presence! Granted, Nen was an entirely different variable to take into consideration, yet differentiating the aura between Mizaki and worm eggs would be tough for an beginner. Maybe Mizaki didn't have anything to fear from the nearing footsteps?

"Looks like someone took care of that fuckin' cool blooded worm for us!"

"Hey jackass! Don't get too close! The dude who did this might still be close by!"

"Then stop fuckin' yellin' and watch my back!"

"I'M NOT YELLING, YOU'RE YELLING!"

Two distinct voices would ring through Mizaki's ears, indicating the footsteps belonged to two somewhat masculine individuals. One voice was higher than average pitched while the other seemed slightly accented. Though regardless of what they sounded like, they would likely become a nuisance for Mizaki; after all, their goal seemed to be Mizaki's current cover, the worm eggs.

"Sssh! I think I see somethin' stuck between the eggs! Must be the dude who killed the cool worm!"

"Are you sure? I don't see anything odd about the eggs' heat signatures...wait, you must be using Nen!"

"I said SSSSSSH, dumbass! If there is someone there, we don't want him knowin' we are experienced Nen users!"

"Screw you! I can do what I want! In fact, why don't I shed some light on this creep lerkin' between the eggs!"

"Hey, fucker! Let me take my goggles off firs- aah!"

One of the two bumbling idiots decided to turn on a very hot light and pointed the light source in the worm egg's direction, the direction of Mizaki's foiled cover. Why the two jackoffs didn't use the bright light in the first place might become clear later, but for now they looked like fools who only just now remembered the existence of light. Regardless, Mizaki would need to take off his heat-sensing technology if he wanted to properly see. That or Mizaki could run and leave the eggs behind, but if Mizaki stayed, he'd notice the appearance of the two nabobs resembled scroungers; heavy clothing meat for the desert, technology draped over their body while carrying around various bags probably meant for carrying loot. In this case, loot meant the worm eggs and whatever Mizaki had on his person. After asking what Mizaki's intentions were, the two scavengers wouldn't say a word, just waiting to see what Mizaki would do.

"We don't mean any fuckin' trouble. Just step aside, let us take those eggs, and-"

"Give us all your valuables!"

The foulmouthed scavenger rolled his eyes and sighed as the other of the nincompoops decided to pull a rusty looking knife from one of his many pockets in an attempt to, as stated before, scavenge from Mizaki anything valuable. How these two knew Nen was beyond understanding; Nen doesn't discriminant unless you're stupid. Then again, perhaps they were bluffing, didn't know what Nen was but were experienced enough to sense the presence of a nearby individual, or something wildly out of the box.

Lance's falling was unconventional, but he came out of the short fall unscathed nonetheless. The mysterious woman rolled her eyes and sighed as she climbed her way down normally while explaining her doubts about letting Lance catch her, "No thanks, I don't trust you just yet." A reasonable statement to make about a stranger only recently turned ally, but the mysterious woman's statement came from another place related to Lance's behavior thus far. Regardless, she eventually succeeded in climbing down and jumped the ten short meters, too. The ten meter fall was a bit rougher for her, but she managed all the same, dusting her heavy, desert clothing before realizing she could simply take off the desert-wear now that her adventure took her elsewhere. She was about to strip when she realized her identity would be revealed to Lance, prompting the still mysterious woman to stop undressing completely.

"As I said earlier, I still don't trust you. I hope you understand."

She made another somewhat valid statement about trust, but was revealing her appearance that important? Well, only time might tell, though there's no guarantee. She took off a substantial amount of cloth off her person and let said cloth drop to the nearby ground, leaving a single layer of raggedy clothing in between Lance's eyes and her normal attire underneath.

"Right, so where should we head to now? I see there's four paths to take, one to my left, right, front, and behind. They all look the same and I can't see very far in any of the dark pathways. Can you see anything, Lance?"

As mentioned by the mysterious woman, four practically identical pathways presented themselves within the confined safe of the ten meter large, square room. Each pathway was also square, five meters tall and wide, and still pitch black in the distance. The light from the chimney-like sinkhole above didn't help much to begin with, so either the pair of Lance and woman would go about adventuring blindly or find some way to see in the dark. Perhaps one of them could even reflect the light coming from the sinkhole towards one of the four paths? No telling how helpful a square meter of sunlight would be until someone tries. The mysterious woman didn't seem to comprehend the possibility, so Lance either had to do what he usually did and blindly adventure forth or stop to think about this pitch black predicament.

He heard the conservation, regarding the large eggs not without some apprehension. Although he knew the worms didn't pose much of a threat, he wasn't too eager to find out how a or several baby worm looked like. Mizaki would be hidden from sight, and he would be blurred even on the infra-red spectrum, amidst the eggs. Unless they were nen users, or had seen or heard him moving... but they didn't seem much professional, arguing and shouting at one another...

A tenor and a baritone, with an accent he couldn't place - both male, both walking towards him. Maybe they were after him, maybe they were after the eggs themselves. He found out soon, as they continued blathering. IV cameras, after all they aren't as foolish as they seem - wait, nen! Mizaki froze as he heard the word. He couldn't hold a smile at the self-described experienced nen user. Nevertheless, he could be stupid and dangerous.

An intense, hot light was pointed towards him, and Mizaki immediately took off his glasses, and covered his eyes. He expanded his aura outwards. If he couldn't see, he could sense. He thought of running, but he probably had already been seen, and he'd rather deal with them outright now than having them pursue him. He stayed in the same place, eyes closed to avoid the burning light. He finally opened them slowly, and he saw two scavengers, heavily equipped - and with plenty of room for loot. They wouldn't have any luck with him, though.

Mizaki wondered why they were after the worm eggs - were they really worth that much? Surely, there must be more valuable stuff in the ruins which was far easier to carry, wouldn't there be? Who wanted those eggs anyway? Were they a delicacy? What else could they be used for? One of the idiot nen users asked what he was doing here. Neither of them moved until Mizaki calmly answered, and both grew tense upon hearing the answer.

"I'm a hunter. I'm here to explore the Yehua ruins.", he told them. "And I don't think you want to fight me.". He dismissed their threat with a smirk. He looked at the rusty knife one of them produced from a pocket. "I'd advise you to keep that in your pocket. I may take it as an attempt at a threat.", he added, channeling his intent through his aura, trying to intimidate them.

He wondered how had these two learned nen, but perhaps they weren't as stupid as they seemed. Mizaki drew his vigoorian flail, and looked at both man in the eyes. If they could spot him and isolate his signature from the worm eggs', they weren't as inexperienced as they seemed at first sight. He looked at them with Gyo, evaluating their Ten.

"If you don't bother me, I won't bother you. If you try to use that knife, which, honestly, hardly looks suitable to cut through butter, I'll kill or incapacitate both of you, depending on how I feel. And, sincerely, neither seems too hard, but perhaps you could surprise me and give me an enjoyable fight." he said. "What deal will you take?", he asked them.

Lance looked puzzled at the woman and her mumbling about trust and so forth "Man you know trust goes both ways right you being all mysterious and all doesn't help. Nothing is really stopping me from just killing you right now you know you better start being a team player at least." This wasn't meant to be taken as a threat or anything just some helpful words to boost cooperation. Lance saw the woman peer off into the darkness of the cave and asked Lance what he saw.

"I don't see jack shit.... wait did you just say, Lance? How do you know my name? Alright, now you got some explaining to do you got 10 seconds before I just kill you right here right now."

He wasn't very pleased at all by this how did she know his name now things are way off and he doesn't like her commands of him. His arms crossed he lifted a finger each time a second past he was now down to 6 he was pretty much ready to blow her brain right out the back of her skull. He wondered if she had some kind of mind reading ability which is spooky he wondered if she could see the picture of what Lance imagined how it would look if her brain went splat against the wall. He only has 3 fingers left and he was ready for action right here right now.

The two scavengers got a little nervous upon flashing a rusty knife Mizaki's way, but most of the time, fighting did not ensue. One way or another situations such as this dissolved peacefully; after all, either the pointy end of the rusty knife would attracted a stranger's trinkets or the handle end of the rusty knife would be detracted and subsequently sheathed. These two scavengers weren't particularly great fighters, much less clever individuals, but they knew how to get themselves out of the situations they put themselves into.

"Whoa whoa whoa! We didn't fuckin' mean anythin' by it! Just wanted to fuckin' test your nerves and see if you would be a valuable enough ally."

"Exactly what he said, yup."

The Ten emanating from the two scavengers was about even, roughly 20-25 aura apiece. Obviously a meager amount compared to Mizaki, but enough to allow these dolts the chance to call themselves 'experienced Nen users'. Regardless, the two stopped being hostile towards the intimidating Mizaki. The high pitched scavenger's knife was put away, for now, only to be seen again if another similar situation reared its ugly head.

"Sorry for the fuckin' trouble, buddy. Gotta look out for ourselves every once in a fuckin' blue moon. So, with your obvious strength and charisma, how does teamin' up sound? We've just about scavenged a good portion or two of this area, so maybe we could but a new deal-"

"Be our bodyguard and we'll guide you to the ruins you spoke of."

"Right, what he fuckin' said."

The pair seemed awfully friendly now that Mizaki was present and capable of combat. The worm would have been a real pain in the ass to deal with on their own, but Mizaki took the beast out solo! Better try and strike a deal with such a strong individual before he strikes you down!

For a few seconds, Lance seemed oblivious as usual. Having used a stranger's name should set off some alarms when the stranger hasn't said his name yet, but eventually Lance did catch the mysterious woman's 'mistake', so to speak. The mysterious woman would have continued to ally herself with Lance if he hadn't noticed, but a Plan B was certainly ready in case the mercenary caught the mysterious woman saying Lance's name.

"Simply prodding your alertness."

Anyway, having successfully tested Lance's true alertness, the mysterious woman could execute the remainder of Plan B and escape to the best of her ability. She seemed to each for her sheathed sword at her side, probably attempting to slash at Lance. Granted, Lance has proven himself to be quick, so why be offensive rather than defensive or just running away? No telling unless Lance acts before the the mysterious woman reaches her sword's handle.

"Goodbye, Lance."

Lance knew it you never trust a mind reading swordsman he's been crossed before and this certainly wouldn't be the last. Seeing her go from the handle of her sword Lance lifted his eye brow it seemed as if she was moving in slow motion to him. Seeing as her hand moved closer and closer Lance thought it would be a good time to interrupt with his gun.

Pulling his pistol out from his side with great speed Lance had drawn his pistol first and pointed it right at the swordsman "HA! I am the quickest hand in the west.... Alrighty hands in the air partner." Lance waited for the swordsman to comply and lift her hands up in the air.

But the one thing Lance noticed was he forgot to load his gun before he came so the pistol is actually empty but he was the only one who knew that she couldn't possibly have figured that out.

An uneasy expression captured both men's faces, immediately after he spoke, and they began an attempt to withdraw their threats. If they backed off so readily as soon as they faced a confident opponent, they were either as much cowards as idiotic they appeared to be or as good fighters as clever they seemed. Again, he wouldn't expect anyone that used a rusty knife to intimidate to carry out their threats. Mizaki snorted.

He might find an use for this idiots, but if he were stuck with them, the hunter would have to be always wary of being attacked. Unless he scared them enough to earn their unquestionable loyalty - which would work only insofar they didn't face anything scarier than himself. Mizaki nodded appreciatively at the scavenger's Ten. It would shame many rookie hunters, but both were weaker than him. He could have them under control, but it'd be a risk...

Neither made any movement, neither showed any hostility and the knife dissapeared far more smoothly than it had emerged. He considered their proposal in silence. Although he didn't want to team up with them... he could do with guides, and both had been here longer than himself. As for being their bodyguard... he needn't really honor that part of the bargain. It wasn't as if he truly expected them to honor theirs, but since he would have to mantain his own safety anyway... A few empty words, a lie spoken in the depths, heard by none else.

"I'll be your bodyguard, then, if you keep your part of the deal.", he told them, slowly. He wondered if he wasn't making a mistake, whether he shouldn't punch both now-friendly faces when he had the chance, but if he found that necessary, the young hunter would have the chance to do it later. Never strike a deal with someone more powerful than yourself, if you can't force them to keep their word. They might change their mind.

"Then, let's get to the Great Hall. I have an awful amount of stuff to search there. You can keep most the loot, except for that which pertains to my research. I am not interested in any valuables, if there any remain.", the information hunter said.

Lance's attempt to fool the mysterious woman would be in vain; she seemed almost lifeless now as she continued to go for her sheathed sword at her side. Due to Lance's arrogant hesitation and bluff, the doll-like movements of the mysterious woman would allow her to grab the sword and attempt to slash at the nearby gun wielder. At this point Lance could start assuming something odd has just happened to the mysterious woman; if Lance felt like checking the mysterious woman's aura, he'd find barely any leaving her body, much less surrounding. Perhaps the mysterious woman wasn't a person at all! All the more reason to hurry up and defend himself, if Lance felt so inclined. The mercenary could easily dodge the sword swing and make an escape towards one of the four dark paths.

The scavengers were relieved when Mizaki turned out to be a reasonable human being. Their paltry efforts at negotiations with such a strong individual paid off, for now at least. The duo knew very well betrayal was possible in any negotiation. Anyway, the scavengers felt as though getting the worm eggs would be safe now that Mizaki was seemingly an ally, so they stepped past the information hunter and went for the very large worm eggs worth tend of hundreds of Jenni apiece; such large worms eggs were a delicacy within the Suburbian Desert. However, the size of the eggs allowed only one egg per individual; carry too much and other, possibly more valuable, artifacts would slip through their grubby fingers.

"Phew! These things are fuckin' heavy! They could feed a rich family of ten or twenty!"

"We'll make mill- ugh...hundreds of Jenni from selling these, ehehe."

The experienced information hunter ought to be capable of discerning the value of the worm eggs just by the reaction of the scavengers, though whether or not Mizaki would actually take such a cumbersome thing with him was another story altogether. Regardless, after getting two eggs, the scavengers headed out towards their next looting destination; the long way towards the Great Hall. Keeping Mizaki around as their personal bodyguard for as long as possible would be essential to looting and scavenging as much as humanly possible!

If Mizaki did continued to follow the nincompoops, he wouldn't be able to find anything of interest for himself unless he fancied broken trinkets. Not only that, but the long way towards the Great Hall was long, to say the least, so perhaps Mizaki would question the reason he partnered with the scavengers and leave them? Whether Mizaki would be patient or not would be up to the information hunter inside him.

Lance saw the strange movements almost puppet like at this point this really made Lance wonder what was going on this made him really wonder. Putting Gyou into his eye Lance looked at the woman in front as well as trying to look around his environment trying to see if anyone was hiding around this could be the work of a manipulator well some kind of ability at least. Dodging the swings with ease Lance wasn't at all concerned about getting hit he would just wait for an opening when she makes a wide swing.

Seeing the gap in her swing Lance went forward quickly and basically performed a teep kick with 35% aura on his foot but with a lot of his force and weight into it this kick it should easily shatter her right rib cage and send her flying to hit the wall behind her.

If she is able to get up from that he would know she is under the influence of someone and that the person should be nearby.
