Legacy of Akinzu: The Sink![]() A plethora of sinkholes found at a considerable distance away from the majority of the other Ziggurat entrances. They appeared after a mysterious explosion from deep below the surface, that seemed to reverberate all the way into the ruins. ... The Ziggurat and it's endless mysteries! However, now seemingly a shell of its former self, the temple is riddled with strange entrances, including what's been dubbed as 'The Sink'. Absolutely nothing is known about the Sink other than the obvious; multiple sink holes leading into an uncharted area of the Ziggurat. No information is known due to the nature of the sinkholes giving the Sink its name. If an adventurer chooses to use the Sink as a means of entering, they will find no obstacle other than the sand standing in their way, maybe. Creatures have been seen falling into one of the numerous sinks while other creatures have been seen scurrying out. Harmless lizards and insects so far, but there is still no telling if there's more down there, especially considering the varying sizes of some of the sinkholes. The Sink's origin seems to be related to an explosion from within the depths of the Ziggurat, but the actual origins of the sinkholes is up to speculation. Did animals create the sinkholes before the explosion or did these sinkholes form around an ancient building related to the Ziggurat? The increasing number of question would likely be unsettling to cautious travelers, but probably not so for foolish travelers. After all, adventurers are seen purposefully jumping into a sinkhole yet never returning. Sometimes individuals are seen teaming up by jumping into the same sinkhole, but still no return. A scream can sometimes be heard after jumping into a sinkholes, but nobody observing the sinkholes cares to mark the sinkhole responsible for the screaming. Entrepreneurs and gamblers from the makeshift bazaar sometimes visit the Sink from, bringing hopeful adventurers with them for peculiar reasons; the gamblers gamble on whether a scream will comes from one sinkhole or another while the entrepreneurs pay for information and the like. Only the gamblers have made any money from their creative exploits while the entrepreneurs continue to be disappointed. OOC: Alrighty then, let's get started! Since there are three of us, including myself, the suggested posting time is 48 hours from the latest post. If you can't post within that time or wish to be skipped, PM or message me (Flame Ingot) through chatango (triedtogetshade). Posting order is decided based on who comes firsts. Have fun~ |

Filigree's words echoed in the hunter's mind as he started at the sinkhole. He shared the throng of treasure hunter's enthusiasm for the legendary ziggurat of Akinzu. That it had actually been found - it was unbelievable, the lost ziggurat had been regarded by many scholars and hunters alike as a myth. He would have trouble to believe it - had it not been discovered by Buster Filigree. Buster Filigree, a hunter almost as legendary as the ruins themselves - dead. Even the iconic two-star treasure hunter had been unable to escape from the clutches of death... ... but, according to legend, the sects of healers of the Yehua empire had known the secrets to longevity - and, an ancient scroll claimed - immortality itself. Of couse, emperors, kings and nobles didn't often last long - but they succumbed to daggers and poison more often than disease, historians agreed from the sparse records available. The Grand Ziggurat of Akinzu was said to hold wondrous arcane marvels. Mizaki wasn't looking for riches, he was here to uncover the temple's antediluvian secrets. After the mysterious explosion, the sinkholes had appeared - and the information hunter knew not why. However, in spite of the distance from the majority of the entrances to the Ziggurat, from the maps Mizaki had consulted, cross-referenced and drawn, he believed that those lead to the Grand Hall and were the most promising way of exploring the ancient Yehua ruins. Although adventurers had scrambled to the Sink, few hunters had ventured to the tunnels - and none had yet came back. He heard the scream from one of the holes and started having second, claustrophobic thoughts. He saw a wad of notes exchanging hands. Mizaki looked at the gamblers and showed them the middle finger - they wouldn't make any money off him. He took a deep breath, and jumped in. |

The dry desert sun was oppressive a land filled with nothing but heat and sand as vast a the ocean it seemed to go on forever. Lance could care less about the death of the Legendary Hunter who had just passed away and left a supposed final treasure hunt for many hunters to participate in and explore as a final with by Filigree. Of course, the tales of vast riches enticed Lance to consider going he was coincidently contacted by a very secretive employer offering a huge sum of money upfront and promising more for the simple task of an assassination job this may be one of Lance's most profitable jobs he has ever been asked to perform. Lance was very curious to whom his employer was and the seemingly vast connections it seems to have at its disposal the way Lance received his payment was most unusual his hidden offshore bank accounts all over the world each had received a substantial boost in numbers and many of his money laundering shell companies doubled in profit themselves effectively they fixed the paper trail from him so the sudden influx of money didn't seem odd. The amount of power they must wield must be immense if they were able to perform something like this they were even able to deliver their orders through complete anonymity using a series of payphones in several countries all while guiding Lance to the location of the Ziggurat even before the news that was announced at Filigree's final wish. The last payphone call he got was the location of the Ziggurat and who exactly was his target. Lance found all his usual gear packed for him in a copter meant to drop him off near an entrance supposed to be called the Sink which is far away from all the other entrances. The copter still landed far off leaving Lance to walk the rest off dressed in a type of camoflouaged fatigues even his vest was changed so that it matched the surrounding desert equipped with all the firearms even his he used most often and relatively well equipped to handle the desert. He even got a cloak the blends in as well it was really useful for keeping the sun out of his face with the hood. After walking for several miles Lance finally saw the sinkholes and wasn't very picky about the one he entered. Slowly walking into a pit Lance let the sand suck him in slowly which made him chuckle it was like being in an escalator going straight into the ground. Lance wasn't very worried about what could be lurking deep down below the only thing on his mind right now was assassination keeping himself hidden Lance decided to perform In to hide his own presence and would hope this would be a simple clean cut job but usually, it never is. The sand began to absorb Lance's body into the ground he thought to himself job first and if he's up to it he could take a little detour and explore the Ziggurat. |

"Kekeke, I bet 100,000 Jenni he's gunna scream, too. You in er whut?" "Ha! You take me for a fool? I heard a scream come from that sinkhole not but one hour ago. That uncultured, middle finger waving, gentleman can kiss my arse. However, I WILL bet on that slowly sinking gentleman over there. I think he's NOT going to scream." "Kekeke, mkay." The chuckling gambler was disappointed in the well spoken gamblers hesitation to gamble on the middle finger waving man, but not so disappointed about the slowly sinking man; after all, both holes expelled screams from their orifices. A naughty smile crossed the chuckling gamblers face as he exchanged another wad of paper with the well spoken gambler. Both Mizaki and Lance entered their respective sinkholes seperatly, unwilling to ask for anyone else's aid for each their own special reason; Mizaki the information hunter and Lance the mercenary. Two lines of work which almost always required secrecy to some degree. Anyway, focusing on Mizaki for a second, the sinkhole the young man entered was wider than most. This wideness could indicate a few lager creatures could have made their home at the bottom, but for now, the way down itself was treacherous enough to warrant a story. Mizaki's way down didn't last long; a sharp bend in the tunnel attached to the sinkhole would force Mizaki to walk his way a few meters before coming to what would seem to be a dead end. The rest of the sinkhole's tunnel seemed to be blocked by either rock or something else and Mizaki would need a proper source of light if he wished to inspect this blockage. If Mizaki did inspect the blockage, he'd be hard pressed to give up on this sinkhole and work his way back up to enter another sinkhole because Murphy's Law states What can go wrong, will go wrong. In this case, Mizaki found himself blockaded by a two meter diameter, man-eating worm. Granted, tagging this creature as 'man- eating' didn't do this worm justice considering the girth of its mouth; if it felt like eating a horse, it could eat a horse. If Mizaki wasn't careful with his inspection of the 'blockage', he'd literally walk into the worm's mouth. With focus being turned towards Lance now, the mercenary would eventually figure out that his 'sinkhole' was actually a form of quicksand. The chuckling gambler already knew this, but the well spoken gambler did not. What seemed like a nice, escalator-like ride was in fact a deathtrap. However, given Lance's might and capability with Nen, he could either force his way through the quicksand without sufficating or climb his way back out. Regardless, if Lance wasn't quick to act, he'd drown in a sea of sand. Not the most glorious way to die nor the most interesting fuel for a story, but what came next would certainly add fuel, "Hey, you do know you stepped into quicksand, right? Are you trying to force your way down or commit suicide?" A feminine voice came from behind Lance, but slowly made it's way around the sinker before finally showing its source; a heavily dressed individual, most likely a woman based on the voice, covered in rags and other desert essentials from head to toe. Apparently a nice person considering she was willing to aid Lance, sticking out a large sword's sheathe like a stick to grab onto. "To be honest, I'm not doing this out of pure kindness; I would like your help in exploring the bottom of a less dangerous sinkhole, but one can never be too sure of what lies ahead, regardless if a scream has come from that location or not." |

Mizaki turned his glasses into thermal vision mode, as he found himself in a dead end, approaching it carefully. He hadn't walked too much through the tunnel, wider than he thought it would be - which he took as a bad sign, until it had bended unexpectedly. He could see a large cilindrical shape in reds and blues from the infrared display and moved slowly towards it to inspect it further... FUCK!. He panicked as he realized, after barely taking a step, that he was facing a worm - whose mouth's radius was at least one meter and which had scary rows of teeth - this is the stuff of nightmares, I won't be able to sleep for the next week. Mizaki clenched the kama-nunchaku and used Ren, expanding his aura further outwards than the normal. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. I guess it explains the screams, and the dissappearances. Mizaki himself felt like screaming... best not to think about the dissapearances, actually. He considered turning back, but he guessed that sooner or later, he'd find these worms in the sinkholes. He wondered if they had excavated it. He forced himself to look at the terrifying worm again - its mouth... it could swallow him whole with little effort. He expanded his aura even further outwards, and shaped it in a circle with Ten. Mizaki estimated that the tunnel was wide enough for him to be able to conjure Aegis. If the worm touched his aura, he would feel it - and he shivered at the thought. He closed his eyes. Mizaki wanted to slash the shit out of the nightmarish monstrousity, not think about it. It was blocking his path, therefore he must destroy it. Mizaki lunged at the worm with his eyes closed, using En, channeling his murderous intent through his aura and slashed, aiming at the side of the its enormous mouth. If he wasn't forced to escape, the hunter would follow with a series of frenetic slashes, trying to get himself in the very narrow opening between the worm and the wall of the tunnel, attacking the worm from there and thus avoiding its nightmare-inducing mouth. If the worm was so large, he reasoned, it would have a lot of trouble maneauvuring in the tunnels, which were little bigger than itself. He intended to use it to his advantage. |

Lance laughed at his own situation he was literally thinking to himself that the sand was moving a bit too slow and it could be quicksand but alas he was caught in the sand and before he got even more stuck. What peeved Lance was the fact that one of the gamblers laughed at him which he didn't take kindly too. His seething thought was interrupted by the voice of a woman to which he snapped his head to get a look but at the same time Lance laid on his back to stop him from sinking further down stopping the sinking at his hips he has been trapped in quicksand before and knows just staying calm it doesn't really try to take you in unless you struggle. Hearing the woman's side comment about what he was doing made him laugh again "I should probably just end it all huh haha....ehhh." his laughter faded and a stoic expression appeared on his face "Man I hate sand it's in my boots..." The women spoke to Lance and heard what she said and her reasoning he nodded but didn't go for the sword sheath instead he spoke words of wisdom You know you're not supposed to try and pull someone out you could just fall in trying to help and make it even worse." Lance using his incredible strength with all the muscle in his legs ripped em right out of the sand and made sure to get a decent distance from the mouth of the pit. "But I do appreciate the gesture even if it was entirely self-serving. Now you said a safer pit I think we might be able to find the safest one of them all actually. " Lance made his way out this pit and went, right for the gambler who laughed at him and instantly put his palm on the top of his skull and lifted him up real high "Say you been out here all day gambling, haven't you? You seem to have a decent amount of money on you so you been winning right? Would you happen to know which one is the pit you never hear a scream from?" Lance added a little bit of force to his fingers putting pressure on the man's head then his eye turned to the other man right next to him "Is this your buddy? Want to help him out here he seems to be at a loss of words do you know anything sir or do you need a little lift as well?" |

The worm blocking Mizaki's path was blind, being a worm and all, but the large creature did have vibration-sensing organs specialized in sending vibration within solid objects such as the ground or sand. The worm therefore sensed Mizaki's approach, readying itself for the prey to literally walk into its mouth. However, an unforeseen variable would cause this creature's demise sooner than expected; Mizaki was armed and grossed out. Mizaki's frenetic slashing against the large worm's open mouth caused considerable damage and subsequent pain to the somewhat helpless worm. All the worm could do to defense itself was to try and escape through the opening Mizaki came from and try to force the slashing menace into submission. Unfortunately, not all last ditch efforts work out for single-minded creatures; Mizaki was able to escape just in the nick of time, successfully slashing against the soft worm's body as the several meter long titan of a monstrosity shot up and out of the sinkhole from which Mizaki entered. The length of the worm was around 15 meters, but only ten meters shot up and out of Mizaki's sinkhole; the worm died mid-escape, unable to clink to what little blood it needed to survive the wounds sustained from Mizaki's frenzy. As the worm peaked in its upward stride ten meters high, the foul yet poor creature roared one last time in a hopeless cry for attention and finally crashed towards the harsh sand with a thud and subsequent quake. Mizaki suceeded in defeating the blockade, but at the cost of blockading where Mizaki came from to begin with. The worm's fat body stuffed Mizaki's sinkhole's opening of which only a licensed crane could move, more or less. Mizaki could attempt to move the worm out of the way or dice the corpse to mincemeat. Granted, Mizaki wished to continue through sinkhole to begin with, so it mattered not the state of the sinkhole's entrance. Mizaki's path would no longer be blocked by anything other than smaller rodents and insects of which none would be provocative. Many twists and turns would in Mizaki's way, but nothing life threatening or interesting enough to elaborate upon. However, these many twists and turns would sap the light from Mizaki's eyes and leave him in the cold, dark sands. He would also need to be weary of the end of the sinkhole's tunnel, for there would be a steep drop into a dark abyss. The heavily dressed, sword wielding woman was glad her honesty didn't get her into trouble with Lance, but she wouldn't have tried if she couldn't see through his thick exterior. Now she possessed an ally, an invaluable tool within the Ziggurat should fighting come to her doorstep. Granted, she had no intention of using Lance for ill intent. She was an honest and straightforward individual after all. Anyway, she observed Lance's barbaric display of strength as he lifted himself out of the sinkhole effortlessly and eventually picked up the laughing gambler by the head with a single hand. "KAAAAAH! I'msorryI'msorryI'msorryI'msorryI'msorry!" The laughing gambler who'd been winning most of the day was scared half to death as Lance walked over. Being lifted up with one hand was even more frightening. However, what frightened the laughing gambler the most was the amount of money he just lost to the well spoken gambler; 100,000 Jenni metaphorically vanished from his pockets when Lance didn't scream! Unfortunately enough, the other gamble would have also failed anyway, so the laughing gambler wasn't having the greatest luck at the moment. The well spoken gambler seemed eerily calm considering Lance's display of brute strength. As a self proclaimed gentleman among gentlemen, the well spoken gambler wasn't allowed to be afraid of barbaric behavior. In fact, was rather displeased by Lance's brute force tactic, "I say, you must think me frightened by such a heathenish display. Behave yourself before I call the authorities! Erhmhm, though if you must know, the safest sinkhole today seems to be the square one over there. I warn you though, by safest, I mean the least number of screams." Based on the well spoken gambler's words, none of the sinkholes didn't occupy a scream at one point or another on this fateful day. The square sinkhole may have had the least number of screams, but any number of screams is always risky. Lance would have to decide what he'd do next. However, one last event happened right before everyone's eyes; a giant, heavily wounded worm rocketed out of a hole from which the middle finger waving gentleman entered. Upon inspection, the worm would be very dead, subsequently blocking the sinkhole. The laughing gambler fainted upon seeing such a horrifying creature whereas the well spoken gentleman continued to seem fearless. "My, my...what a loud abomination. I guess you would have won ol' chap; a scream did come from that sinkhole after all, just not the one you were expecting, har har! Lucky you, brute, that wasn't the square sinkhole...not that your risk changes, mind you." |

He slashed, the flail's blade tearing the worm's soft skin. It rushed forward, trying to escape towards the sinkhole's entrance and engulf Mizaki in its enormous mouth. Mizaki leapt out of the gargantuan worm's way, slashing again and again at its skin. He took a breath as it shot upward, hearing a roar that made him shiver and a thump. Mizaki was almost knocked to his feet as the ground shifted underneath him, once the worm crashed onto the ground. As the hunter looked upwards, he learned that the worm's escape attempt had been a failure. He wondered how did the gigantic beast survive. How many of those were there in the sinkholes? Did they eat anything besides unfortunate adventurers? He hoped so, because he reckoned it would take many for it to grow to that impressive, nightmarish size. Nevertheless, looking at it dead, he thought he might have exaggerated - he would have to be cautious, but the worms themselves didn't seem to be much of a threat, however gross they might be. He might have... overreacted. It completely blocked the sinkhole's entrance, and it probably weighted several tonnes, so the hunter figured it wouldn't be moved anytime soon. In spite of Mizaki's curiosity at the gamblers' reaction at the appearance of a several meter long monstruous worm's appearance from the hole, he supposed that actually served his purposes. It might discourage some adventurers from venturing into the sinkholes, but he doubted it would do much - there were enough foolish and single-minded people whose minds wouldn't be changed by the prospect of finding another beast such as that one. However, more importantly, it meant he didn't have to worry about being followed, for now. He had chosen the entrance carefully, but he suspected the sinkholes were connected below the surface. I suppose there's no going back now, the hunter told himself as he examined the blocked path, and moved forward, deeper, towards the ancient ruins. He was in Ten now, but he advanced slowly and carefully. He didn't fancy another suprise. Although he was startled by a few rats and annoyed by small insects, and the sinkhole's trajectory was more tortuous than what he'd expected, there were no more. After several minutes moving through the sands, which insisted in making his way into and through his clothes, which started to itch and irritate him, the tunnel had become entirely dark. At first, Mizaki's eyes had mostly adjusted to the darkness, but afterwards he grew as blind as the worm he's slaughtered earlier and was forced to turn on the infra-red mode on his glasses' display. He wanted to save its battery, but he couldn't risk being caught unaware so deep in an unfamiliar location who held none knew what. He eventually reached the end of the tunnel, and he instantly recognized what a great idea it had been to turn on the thermal vision mode. If he hadn't, he might have not noticed that, or the sudden drop after a stretch of sand not unlike any other he had trodden upon that marked it. Mizaki grabbed the largest rock he could find, which was no larger than his fist, set up a cronometre in his watch and dropped it. He stopped it once he heard the thud of the rock crashing down below, and estimated the depth of the drop. It was unnerving, but he could make it, he guessed. Mizaki wasn't too confident on his estimation, nonetheless. He hadn't accounted for air resistance, maybe it had it an obstacle closer to the surface... He glanced at it - from the IV camera, he could see none, but maybe there were further below... It was not as if he had any choice, however. He had nowhere else to go. Mizaki took a deep breath focused aura on his legs, and leapt, or rather, dropped from the tunnel's end. It would be best if he didn't have to deal with any initial speed. He saw hunters who could keep themselves floating in the air, but he was no emmiter. Mizaki hoped he could just crash not too hard... on the courtyard, below? Lance dropped the the laughing gambler and heard the claim from the well spoken gambler that the square sinkhole was the one with the least amount of screams which is plenty for Lance. As Lance was about to speak to his newly gained companion a giant sand worm came out of one the sinkholes which instantly caught Lance's attention. A huge grin came across his face with a hardy laugh "Oh man what a sight huh hahah!" Lance was excited too see such a sight it reminded him of home which was pleasant but it did make him yearn to return back home too which he knew is impossible but one day he shall return hopefully. Turning his head to face his companion he pointed at the dead worm "We are going to need some of that worm before we venture off." Lance gestured her to follow him to which the pair made there way to the corpse of the now dead beast. Sliding down the pit too the creature Lance pulled out a knife from his pocket and jammed it deep into the side of the worm making a square cut as deep as he could. Making the sqaure cut Lance took the chunk of meat out and reveled behind the chunk of meat that he took out was a wall of white goop. "Old trick I learned at home." Lance went in and reached into his backpack and pulled out a half empty bottle of what looked like rum went easily down Lance's throat and he took the empty bottle and instantly plunged it into the white goop of the worm and filled it to the top before taking it out and wiping it off with his hands. Swirling the white goop Lance got a piece of string which he ripped from his own uniform the end of his shirt so it didn't matter much getting a decent length and dumped the string down the bottle of the white goopy bottle and capped it this time. with a cork. "Alright we could head down the sinkhole now sorry for the wait." Lance said this as he put the bottle in his bag and put it back on his bag. Lance looked at his rifle and wondered if going down the hole would mess it up as well as his pistol but if anything he could clean it out. Heading over to the strange square sinkhole Lance looked down over the edge and looked at his partner "Last one in is a rotten egg." Lance took a jogging start and dove straight into the hole wondering what was just below the sand. |

Mizaki simply jumped into the darkest darkness and hoped for the best, preparing himself using Nen to the best of his capabilities. Thankfully, simply jumping down had its merits considering the darkness held another worm! However, this time the worm would be unable to prepare for the oncoming 'assault' from above; the Nen being used in Mizaki's legs would not only soften the impact against the worm but would also crush the gargantuan worm in the process. Well, perhaps the worm softened the landing and not the body crushing Nen. Regardless, the worm was unable to survive the impact and quickly died, even though normal ground worms would be able to survive at least a few minutes when split in half. Size and species makes a significant difference after all. Whatever amount of worm goop would splash against Mizaki would feel oddly cool; this cool liquid would help explain why Mizaki was unable to see the worm using his special gadget. Though, if this worm was of the same species as the dead worm above, why would it be in possession of a cool liquid? This conundrum would likely cause Mizaki to think about his next move quickly and wisely else he fall prey to heat seeking predators. Several paths lay roughly 30 meters in all directions of Mizaki's landing point. Some higher up, others further into the ground. With the darkness covering most, if not all, these paths, Mizaki would need to think carefully about how he'd escape from the incoming rush footsteps. If Mizaki looked around his landing point, he'd notice an assortment of heat signatures in the shape of one meter large balls. Most likely worm eggs. Perhaps these would help in his flight...or fight if he was ballsy enough. The heavily dressed woman wasn't too fond of Lance's strange behavior when the giant worm rose and fell from one of the sinkholes. In fact, given how strong Lance was, she was surprised the worm-goop-collecting young man didn't try to lift the worm from the sinkhole and make his way down what was likely now the safest sinkhole; the worm was likely the cause of all the screams in that specific sinkhole, which was now dead. However, Lance instead headed off towards the square sinkhole in hopes of something different, or so the mysterious woman theorized. If only I was strong enough to lift this damn worm from the ground...ugh, well, at least my ally seems strong. Better him than nobody. Just wish he checked how deep the square sinkhole was before barging in. Lance really should have checked the depth of the fall through the square sinkhole, though the same could be said about his female companion; she followed but her and Lance would soon find out that light reached the end of the square sinkhole. From Lance's distance from the bottom, this tiny light was the only light not being blocked by Lance and the woman's combined shadow. Therefore there's no telling how far down this square sinkhole would reach until either of them went extinct. Given Lance's reaction to most of the situations thus far, the heavily dressed woman had to speak up in order to shed more light, metaphorically speaking. "Shit! This sinkhole doesn't have turns or corners! Stop yourself, quickly!" Thankfully enough, this sinkhole's horizontal size was only one meter. This would allow even a normal person to stop themselves by using their arms and legs as friction devices to push against the sides of the sinkhole. There may be coarse sand lining the stone walls of the square sinkhole, but better sand than slime. Anyway, the heavily dressed woman quickly stopped herself from falling by thrusting her arms and legs to her sides and against the walls of the sinkhole. With her being heavily dressed, the cloth and bandages covering her hands allowed for a smooth halt. Could the same be said about Lance? If Lance was able to stop himself, him and the woman would be able to safely climb up or down as they please given enough stamina; up contained what they already knew whereas down contained one square meter plot of light. The pair wouldn't need to worry about reaching the very bottom for the distance between the ground and end of the sinkhole was a measly ten meters. Edited by Flame Ingot, Jul 11 2017, 06:53 PM.
