Hullo World!

It seems the spring has brought us not just a wave of good weather, but also a shower of great new changes to the site. On top of our Spring Appreciation and Mothers Day Letters events, which will run through the season, but we also have a number of equally awesome changes and shops for all you lovely folk, from our equally awesome and lovely staff.

It seems a mysterious shot has opened on the edge of town. Specializing in what were once only seasonally available items, the Events Shop will let players exchange their hard earned Event Tokens for magnificent items ranging from magma weapons, to speacity cookbooks, to a fan item representing some of the sites strongest characters. As a special Celebration of the stores opening, all members who post in the celebration thread will receive a special bonus, so make sure you check it out before time runs out!

Within the workings of your roleplay here, make sure you check out the newest section of the Misc. Info section of the rule book, Creative Freedom and You This section outlines the sort of freedom players have here at HxHRPG and the varying types of adventures one might find in a thread.

Saving one of the best for last, the Hunter Exam Hunter Exam system has been fully revamped. What was once a fairly large and very lengthy system, is now a much more direct and streamlined adventure for the characters who want to test their own mettle in becoming some of the select few who call themselves Hunters.

While that’s it for now, there are a few more massive projects coming down the pipeline soon, including the much anticipated Group/Faction System, and some changes to the Nen System!

Tah Valley

A warm spell followed by rainfall always meant flooding in the peaceful Tah Valley. Although it was a regular occurrence, the simple people had little means to handle the dangerous floods, and struggled year after year. Crops were destroyed, livestock was swept away, and homes had been ruined routinely by the fast moving waters, but the valley folk managed to continue in relative peace. The harsh elements of the isolated villages created a close-knit society. One person’s problems commonly became everyone’s concern, and it was on the eve of the flower harvest when the sudden flood took Nigii’s youngest daughter.

He had been working in the field when the rushing mountain waters began spilling down. It was customary for his little girl to go with Nigii when he went out to the flats. She was too much of a handful for her mother, and delighted in the sweeping moss fields, so the farmer always took her along when he needed to dig for milk beetles. On that particular afternoon, she had wandered off further than usual and didn’t come when he called for her. As the waters rose, Nigii’s worry grew. Had she fallen asleep in a begonia tree? The flooding was getting fierce; the water was over Nigii’s knees and rising steadily. Debris was already noticeably moving quickly past him and it had begun to rain. Over and over again he called for her, his heart hammering and his color paling.

Heartbroken and frantic he blew his horn and soon all of the village was wading in the dangerous current and calling for the child. Many things were lost that night, but village mourned only for Nigii’s daughter. Holding his exhausted wife, the farmer raised his eyes to the small statue in the grotto. Around him people coughed and drew closer to the fire. This flood had driven them to the high rocky place; a refuge for the worst of times.

“Please bring my little one back to me.” He prayed to the humble stone lady.

Everyone's always telling you to be humble. When was the last time someone told you to be great?

Kenneth did not like it at all. Not even close. If there was one thing that Kenneth hated with every atom and the consciousness it somehow inhabitated, then it was someone else imposing their rules on others at a societal level. Especially if corrupt or totalitarian. Not too long ago he mapped out all the corrupt places on earth, with the most trustworthy friend, the internet. Now again he was at an excursion, he seemed to have a lot of them these days.

The first day didn't go well. In fact, it went terrible. He traveled from village to village at rapid speeds but the results were messy. They were all incredibly sceptic to the truth, they completely fed into their government's mess. Some were conspiracy theorists that knew their government was fucked up but had no clue how the outside world really was. They see everything in the glasses of conspiracies and big power people. Kenneth saw himself as sticking it to the man, but he wasn't that desillusioned just yet.

Today was similar, he had already given up and decided to go home after this. He just planned to finish this day before going back. Now he speedwalked to some valley where a lot of villages were. The raindrops fell on his hood like a bag of bricks, he wished he brought something else to cover him. Or checked the weather in the country before visiting. Hopefully he could do a bit more before leaving but he doubted that notion. Arriving at the first village, the first thing he noticed was a loud swishing sound and looking up, floods on top of floods. It was in a bad state, and that was being generous.

Incapable of navigating around the location, completely unfamiliar with the territory, he did what he instead, choose to sprint. Covering large distances very quickly in search of something, anything. He wasn't picky after the failure of yesterday and the half one of today. He just wanted to speed the process up because mentally he had already given up hope.

Wet. The tree was good, but clothes were wet. Tummy empty. The rain had stopped! With sluggish movements, the three year old climbed down from her place of refuge. Cautiously, she dipped a toe into the floodwater. It’s murky color did not trouble her, and it’s temperature was tolerable. She simply hoped it wasn’t too deep. During that long loud night of water, she’d felt it rise all the way to where the branches cradled her huddled form; partially submerging her at one point. It was fortunate that the little one loved water, and found the experience interesting rather than terrifying. Floods were common in her home land, her father had taught her to climb the begonia tree and to wait for him in times of big water.

But she was tired of waiting. Long time of tree and now hungry. The water was still high. Up to armpits. Pee pee in the water.

“Daadaa!” The child called out happily. “DAADAAAA!” She wanted food.

A splashing sound came. Running man. Funny! The little girl watched as the figure got closer across the flat watery land, and waved her arms. It was customary to greet new friends after all. Laughing, she grinned at the big fast splasher as he swiftly crossed the plain.

“DOOOO DEEEE!” a song hello to the new water runner.

Doo Deeeee!

Kenneth stopped abruptly, sending pain twinges of strain through his quadriceps. He looked for the source of the sound. It was upwards somewhere, probably up in the trees. Kenneth was greeted, quite literally by a little girl. Kenneth didn't understand, he didn't have the most friendly look he knew. With all his tattoos and permanent douche smirk. Where did she have the idea from that it was safe to be alone with you. Nevermind the fact that she was one syllable away from shouting 'doo-doo', which would mean the exit of Kenneth. He didn't have time, or the skill to be taking care of diapers.

Kenneth snatched up his phone from his pockets. In almost the same movement he opened it and entered the auto-translation tool. He put his phone on max volume to make sure she heard it. "Where are your caretakers. Are you here alone? You know it's dangerous here right", Kenneth wanted to say a lot more than just that, but he didn't wanna overload the poor girl with information. She had that fragile aura that made you wanna protect and shield her... Apparently also against too many questions at the same time. Kenneth didn't think she was hostile, the grin on her face was bigger than his ego. Well, not literally because that would be impossible.

He still couldn't put his guard down however. The 'poor little girl trap' was a known trick, he learned that from Anansi. Kenneth scanned the environment around her but didn't sense anyones presence. It was possible that she was lost, climbing the tree for survival. It wouldn't make sense for a girl her age to be alone during a flood, at least not on purpose. He made a note to first hear out her answer before making a decision on what to do, he took a few steps towards her. Close enough for him to be confident that the auto-translation tool would catch her response and send it back to him.

Water runner stopped and looked up. Funny because she down. Down in the water making splashy fun. When the runner showed her a beautiful rock that made noise, the child squealed with delight. The rock was singing!

“Ta ta! Ta ta!” Pointing at the pretty talking rock, the child’s gibberish was immersed in giggles. Stomach empty however, and soon the smiling was over.

“Me hunny. Eet? Eet?” sloshing towards the runner, the little one opened and shut her small hand in a grabbing-like gesture.

“Peeeees? Eet? Me hunny.”

As the child was speaking, the spiny dorsal fin of a horse-eel broke the water’s surface a yard from where they stood. Normally they weren’t aggressive creatures which was convenient given their noteworthy size and strength, but this one hadn’t fed in over a week.

Noticing the pinkish color, the little girl turned to look at the water dwelling creature with fascination. It glided silently around them and seemed to be interested! A new swimming friend! Maybe touch it and hold it and pet it and lick it and have a ride! A swim ride!

As if reading the child’s thoughts, the horse-eel headed straight for her; it’s speed picking up.

Kenneth shook his head. He didn't know what was with him lately, must have felt victims to his own illusions. She was the quite the hyperactive one. Too naive, but aren't most children? It was cute and he almost wanted to play with the child before remembering that a flood was coming up and they would both probably die as Kenneth's swimming ability is more mediocre than his persuasion ability.

Apparently the little brat was hungry. Kenneth didn't have any food with him, but he could also go for a bite. Maybe he should fix them something up, while they were running for their lives before they die. He would bring her home, sugarcoat the story of how he saved her and hope to use it as a leverage. Kenneth was just about to ask if she knew where her home was till his senses picked up a threat.

Kenneth two-stepped at maximum speed, picked her up and launched himself in the trees for safety. Hoping that it couldn't follow them up, but staying alert to make sure he was prepared if it did. He didn't want to show violence to the kid at this age, if he was capable of escaping this he would rather take that option until all others were exhausted.

Through the translation tool he asked what direction she came from and that her family was waiting for her.

“WEEEEE!!!!” Up up up into the tall tree with the glowing stone man! Laughing and waving, looking down down and dancing! Maybe the sky was close enough to touch now! The man made his stone glow again and she understood. Well she was from her momma and dada obviously. Home. She wanted home.

“Momma. Me wan momma. Chee Chan momma. Chee Chan momma.”

The child was tired and growing weary of games. Rubbing her eyes, she tried again with a serious face like the one dada used.

“Chee Chan wan go momma.”

The little one’s chin began to tremble and her eyes moistened. In the distance, a soft horn was heard. If there had been any kind of wind that day, they wouldn’t have heard it, the sound was so faint. Chee Chan recognized it right away and kicked her feet in delight.

“Dada! DADA! DAAADAAA!

The horn had in fact been blown by the child’s father. He could wait no longer for the waters to recede and risked meeting the various creatures that sometimes came with the floods. He paddled alone in the fragile canoe and scanned the dark waters with exhausted eyes. His heart was broken and aching for little Chee Chan.
