Jake shielded her eyes from the torrential rain pouring down at her, the strong winds threatening to blow her away from the mountain cliff face. She grabbed one side of the hood of her raincoat as it was nearly blown away. Jake adjusted the heavy pack on her back and stared up at the mountain peak that stood waiting to test her will. She narrowed her eyes at it as if it was a smug refusal to bow down to the force of the elements. She wiped her face with one hand to reduce the moisture running down her face, then trudged on. It has been an entire year since the incident at Torsif Field. All her broken bones and bruises may have healed but her psyche still remained as battered and bruised as it was that day. She could barely remember what exactly happened but what she did recall was the face of the boy that defeated her. It was humiliating. Being defeated was one thing, but being owned by a boy that looked half her age was just mortifying beyond belief. The year she spent recuperating, however, gave her time to reflect on things. Having almost lost her life made her wonder what her life really was all about. Was it enough that she just spent her day to days doing everything and nothing at the same time? The experience made her feel that she needed a goal. What that goal was, she did not yet know. The experience also taught her how weak and fragile she really was. She always knew that she was not that strong. Yet somehow, she always found a way to get past any weakness. Except, that time in Torsif, her luck finally ran out and she almost paid too dear a price for it. If she wanted to move ahead in this world, she needed to be stronger. She needed to find a real master and not just a wandering martial artist to teach her. But its not like she can just demand that of anybody. And on top of that, she also needed to train her body back to full strength. Jake could not tell exactly what time of day it was because the storm clouds covered the sun completely and turned the whole sky a dark grey. Judging by the rumbling of her stomach, though, it was most likely noon or a little past that. Jake was getting tired. She wanted to sit down somewhere and take out some of her rations to help replenish the energy she had burned on her hike up the mountain. This was quite impossible at the moment though because she was in the middle of a steep grassy incline with no trees or any kind of shelter in sight. With a sigh of resignation, she willed herself to trek the little ways left to the top of the incline and hoped that what waited at the top was some form of shelter from the cold rain. After what seemed like 20 minutes later, she reached the top and was overjoyed to find a small cave. Jake looked heavenward in gratitude and practically ran for the refuge of the cave. The cave was dark and stuffy but immensely more comforting than the merciless deluge of cold water outside. Jake took off her heavy burden and laid it against what she felt was the wall of the cave. She then rubbed both her hands and exhaled on it, hoping to restore some warmth to her pruny fingers. All this she did by feel because the interior of the cavern was dark. In order to prepare her small meal, however, she needed to have at least a little light. She rummaged inside her pack until she felt for either the box of matches or the lighter she had hidden deep within to shield it from moisture. She found the lighter and eagerly lit it. Fate had yet again left a little surprise for her. Lit by the feeble glow of her lighter were two hulking masses of flesh that did not look very happy to share their sanctuary with her. “Hello Mister and Missus Ape”. despite not really knowing the two creatures' genders, she feebly whispered with a nervous smile. She tried to be as polite as possible by offering the two a slight nod. But of course, Jake is fully aware that the mountain apes of Mount Miera were an inhospitable bunch. Her still drenched body began to sweat terribly. Edited by margrae, May 4 2015, 02:06 AM.

"Argh... Come on..." Rain. Although given fair warning by the increasing temperature earlier in the day and the overcast sky, Aiza chose to brave the oncoming storm and keep training in the heart of Mount Miera. Persevering through the constant bombardment of rain Aiza, with his legs wrapped tightly around a thick tree branch, continued to lift his body vigorously up and down, performing abdominal crunches high up in the trees. The high altitude of mountainous regions made for excellent training spots. Although the Rocky Mountains of the Vigorous Isle were his first choice ordinarily, Aiza decided that it was high time for a change of pace. One of the main things that attracted him to the place was the wildlife. With larger wooded areas than the Rocky Mountains, Miera was home to a far more diverse variety of flora and fauna. The fact that they were known for their adapted body shapes and vicious temperaments only served to intrigue Aiza more. However, he had been somewhat disappointed on that front. He hadn't seen a single predator since he'd arrived. He chose to train high up in the trees. On a subconscious level, he must have been looking to attract the attention of the beast that intrigued him the most; The Great Mountain Apes. Infamous for being especially aggressive, even in relation to the rest of the native wildlife, Aiza was surprised that he hadn't stumbled upon their territory yet. It was quite possible that they'd sought out shelter from the storm. After a while, having decided that he was due a break, he felt that he ought to seek out shelter as well; Aiza found that he'd had quite enough of being drenched in the constant rains. After leaping down from the trees and gathering his equipment, Aiza began to trek higher into the mountains. There were many caves around but, especially in the wooded area, it was very likely that the chances were higher of bumping into a creature that had the same idea. Eventually trees began to grow scarcer and scarcer, until there were almost none in sight, replaced by rocks and grass. "Ugh..." Aiza sighed heavily, lugging himself up the side of the mountain through the harsh downpour. With the rain creating a watery mist all around, as it bounced off of the ground, it was a bit of a struggle to see. Something caught his eye though, amidst the thousands of drops. A small light in the distance. Pressing on harder, quickening his pace as he neared the faint light, Aiza began to jog up the slope. From the looks of it, somebody was inside one of the deeper caves. "Perfect..." He thought to himself, beaming widely as he approached. A voice. Aiza furrowed his brow. It sounded shaky, there was an air of panic in the soft whisper. He didn't need to know what was said, it was clear that somebody was in trouble. Slowly creeping into the cave, Aiza began to charge Void Sparks in both hands. Edging around a corner to take a peek at the situation, Aiza could make out the three figures. A woman, slowly backing away from two hulking figures. Mountain apes. "Sorry about this!" Aiza leapt around the corner, catching the creatures off guard. Lurching backwards, away from the woman, they turned to face Aiza. Suddenly, Aiza threw off his jacket. Drenched in the rainwater, it was the perfect conductor. Throwing the jacket, so that it spread out mid-flight, the pair of apes both raised their arms to bat it away. "Too late." Aiza outstretched his palms and fired two streams of electricity, straight at the pair. Using the jacket wasn't particularly necessary, but in terms of style-points it was perfect. "Hmph..." Aiza smirked. The apes yelled out in fear, scrambling for a moment before hightailing it straight out of the cave. "Well, looks like you were in a bit of a sticky situation there." Aiza chuckled. He outstretched his hand to shake hers. "The name's Aiza." He took on a strange look, slightly confused. "What on earth possessed you to come up here to hang out with mountain apes?" |

With danger standing just a few feet in front of her, all Jake’s senses were fully directed at the two angry figures snarling at her. Because of this, she was caught by surprise when suddenly a tall man bolted past her and threw his jacket at the vicious primates. He swiftly followed this by sending what looked to Jake like currents of electricity from the palm of his hands. This wasn't the first time she has encountered extrahuman feats and was well aware of the existence of Nen. She herself has some knowledge of the subject although much still needs to be learned on her part. Nevertheless, she was amazed by the ease at which this man was able to utilize the technique. He was clearly very knowledgeable. The sparks hit both targets and sent the beasts scurrying out of the cave. Jake jumped back to make way and accidentally stepped on the pack she laid against the cave wall. She almost made a bumbling fool out of herself but was able to quickly regain composure. The man now turned to her. The cave was dark and the little light afforded to her by her lighter had gone out in all the commotion. But even in the dimness, she was able to make out a tall form that towered over her average frame. "Well, looks like you were in a bit of a sticky situation there." the man had said with a small laugh that resonated in the small enclosure. His voice was deep and with a quality that made her feel that he was an honorable sort. He probably was part of some warrior clan, she surmised. But of course she could not fully tell just by the little display she saw earlier and just by his voice. True, the exhibition clearly labeled him a master but whether he was the kind of master she was looking for needs to be further ascertained. She felt more than saw him stretch his hand to shake hers. "The name's Aiza." she told her. “Jessica,” she replied. “though most know me by Jake”. His grip was firm but still friendly, the kind of shake that reveals his confidence. "What on earth possessed you to come up here to hang out with mountain apes?" came his next inquiry. Jake laughed at that, the kind of boisterous laugh she was known for back in her little island home. The laugh was both her way of letting out all the tension she had accumulated during the encounter with the wild just now, as well as a self-depreciation. She knew there were safer spots to train, other mountains that were less dangerous to climb and prove that she can beat the tough elements. However, the biggest flaw in character she has is an uncanny disposition to always end up in the wrong place at the right time. What was meant to be a hike through the Rohto Mountain range turned out into a jaunt into the hazards of Mount Miera all because along the way, she must’ve taken a wrong turn and couldn't be bothered to back track anymore. Well, fate has a way of making you meet people for a reason and although lately fate has been a right nasty bitch to her, here she was making the acquaintance of a promising stranger. “Oh, I’m just a wondering nobody looking for a master. Turns out caves aren’t the right places to look for them.” she replied with mischief in her eyes. “How about you, Aiza? What possessed you to do the same?” |

"Odd..." Aiza thought. The woman seemed rather nonchalant about his usage of Void Sparks, leading him to believe she definitely had experience with Nen. It surprised him a little. She seemed friendly enough, grateful that he'd stepped in. There was just enough light creeping in from outside and, combined with the light from her lighter, Aiza was able to get a good look at her. Judging from her attire, along with the fact that she was decently equipped, lead Aiza to think she was some sort of hunter. She had a somewhat short frame, at least relative to himself; his own height was certainly accentuated when juxtaposed against hers. Smiling back as she spoke, Aiza's attention was fully drawn when she mentioned that she was looking for a master, or a teacher of some sort. Pondering on it, as she said the words, he laughed internally at his strange way of bumping into people in the wilderness. It seemed that even though he'd come to the mountains to cultivate his own skills, fate had other plans for him. More than willing to help her out, Aiza perked up. "Woah, woah. Hold your horses." He laughed. "I came here myself to train. Maybe i can help you with your situation. I don't like to toot my own horn, but I've certainly taken on some students in my time. Some more successful than others...." he laughed. |

Apparently fate has had enough of throwing shit at Jake’s face for the meantime. Lady luck has once again smiled on the destiny of the young contract hunter aspirant. She managed to find herself a master. What is most incredible about it is that she managed to find one on top of a lonely yet danger-filled mountain; practically in the middle of nowhere. Jake smirked at the thought but controlled herself from laughing. It simply wouldn't do to give her new master the impression that she was some sort of hyena incapable of keeping a straight face. She learned that Aiza was also in the midst of his own training and she was indeed grateful that he could spare some of his time to teach a complete nobody like her. Now both of them walked out of the cave and into the sunlight that just now peeked out from the dissipating rain clouds. Jake had grabbed her pack before they exited and was now carrying it over one shoulder. Adjusting it to a more comfortable position, she now turned to her new master and inquired. “So, master--” she addressed him, half-bowing clumsily at the last second in hopes of adding more respectfulness to her designation of him. “--how should we start the training?” she continued with eagerness in her eyes. |

Watching as the wall of rain that separated Aiza and Jake from the outside begin to evanesce before his eyes, Aiza smiled. Slowly but surely, the downpour became drizzle and the drizzle became mere droplets. Dozens of pillars of heavenly light began to emerge, penetrating the cloud, shining down across the mountain range... Sunbreak. It was as though the clouds had knowingly parted before the pair. The way the weather almost seemed to react to their presence boded well, mother nature giving them her blessing before they started; she warmly invited them to begin their training. Chuffed by her keenness to begin, Aiza scratched the back of his head, a little embarrassed. The fact that she was addressing him as her 'Master' already made him smile, he liked the sound of that. Wasting no time, Aiza strode out ahead of Jake and turned. Hands held behind his back, like some sort of drill sergeant, Aiza held his head high and began pacing up and down. "There's no need for such formality." He laughed. "Well firstly, it would help me if you gave me an idea of what you wanted to learn. Of course, i could just give you a general training session. But if you'd like to specialize, we can do that too." |

“Well,” Jake began. “I know a little bit about Nen but not much. It would be great if we could strengthen my basics. I know there is still a lot I can improve on.” she replied eyes turning away in embarrassment. “Oh! but I do already have an idea what kind of hatsu I want to have.” she excitedly put in. “I know I’m a transmuter so I was thinking of transmuting my aura into metal so that I can change weapons whenever I want.” she added with a smile. “Though right now I only know one sword style,” she supplemented while staring at the fingers she was tapping together. “I saw this dude once who was able to fight with swords and staves and a whole bunch of weapons and thought it was pretty cool. I’d like to be able to do that.” she said shyly staring up at the man. Jake was feeling embarrassed that a girl like her could be interested in such a thing but nevertheless went on with her explanation of what she wished she could learn from him. “Do you think you could also teach me your sword style?” glancing at the weapons the man was carrying. They were weapons that were new to her. She’d love to see Aiza in action with them. She guessed he would be a master with them and looked forward to it and to the training. She eagerly waited for his response, hoping that it was a favorable one but before he could respond, her stomach decided that that was the time to remind her that she had not eaten her midday meal. Jake face-palmed at the embarrassing sound. “Err… after lunch, maybe?” she added. |

Aiza furrowed his brow, his suspicions about Jake confirmed by her words. It was clear that she was familiar with nen. "Sounds interesting..." Aiza nodded, smiling a little as her cheeks flushed red with embarrassment. He found her sheer level of excitement cute, whilst she explained the man she'd seen fight. However, he maintained a somewhat serious posture, He stood with his arms folded, as she went on to give him an idea of what she wanted to learn. "Hmm..." Nodding his head. He grinned as she asked to learn his style from him. It excited him to teach properly again. It had been a long while since he'd properly assumed the role of master and formally shown someone the ropes. The fact that Jake seemed so eager inspired the same feeling in Aiza; her excitement was simply infectious. Upon mention of food though, Aiza realised that his own stomach was growling and ushered her back towards the cave. "Well, looks like you've bumped into the right man." He raised his hand in a 'thumbs up'. "Expect to be out here a while though learning from scratch is going to take work. We prefer to throw our practitioners straight into the fire, back home. You'll be no exception." Smirking as her stomach continued to growl, Aiza patted his own. "Looks like great minds think alike. I'm starving! We should head back inside to eat though, i'd rather not get my arse wet on the grass." He laughed. "Let's set up camp here, light a fire. You got a lighter or something? I'd rather not have to use the stick method..." He scratched the back of his head, himself a little embarrassed now. He was awfully ill-equipped really, tending only to carry dried food around. "This is all i've got." Aiza pulled out a few packets of dried meat, a single bag of rice and a couple of his favourite Kakinese condiments. "Unfortunately i'm not exactly a gourmet hunter..." He chuckled awkwardly, presenting the food. Edited by Flash, May 17 2015, 05:47 PM.

“Well then, Master Aiza, you’re also in luck!” she beamed at him. “I may not be a gourmet hunter either but I happen to have worked for a few and know a thing or two about this or that.” While she was saying this, she was also rummaging through her backpack and pulled out a small iron pot. “I also don’t have much” she said, showing him that the pot contained a few small bags of dried fruit and some spices. “But they also taught me that most of what we need we can find in nature. Fresh food tastes better too.” she added as she grabbed her utility knife and jogged towards the outside of the cave. “I’ll be just a second.” she called over her shoulder as she exited. Not a minute later, she was back with a handful of herbs and was assembling the ingredients they will need for their meal. “Please make yourself more comfortable. This won’t take long.” Jake assured Aiza as she lit a fire and placed the pot over it. She then filled the pot with water and waited for it to boil. She then proceeded to cut the herbs into little pieces as well as the dried meat that the man offered. Once the water began to boil, she filled it with enough rice for the stew she was making, covered it with the lid and turned to talk to Aiza while they waited. “I figured, Aiza, that you may want to know a little bit about your new student.” she said as she leaned back on a part of the cave wall she deemed cleanest. “I’m from an island off the west coast of the Yorubian Continent. I’m not entirely sure what the name of our island is.” she said, scratching her cheek, eyes downcast as a mannerism of her embarrassment. “For me it simply is home. You get what I mean?” she asked, glancing at him. “I sort of decided to see the world on my own when I was 16 and have been getting around through temp job after temp job.” she explained, fiddling with the utensils she just took out from her pack. “But it was fun!” her eyes now starting to shine with excitement. “I get to meet many interesting people. One of which was a wandering swordsman who taught me the style I use now.” she explained, glancing at the twin bolos leaning in one corner. “He was also the one who taught me a little about nen. The rest, though, including how to make my hatsu, I learned by piecing together info I got from the different people I met. So I’m pretty sure my nen has a lot of holes in it.” she chuckled at her incompetence. “You have a very interesting set of swords, Aiza” she commented, having glanced at them at the end of her tale. |

Aiza sighed with relief, taking a seat around the fire and watching as Jake pottered about, preparing something to eat. It seemed that Aiza was hungrier than he'd thought; he was practically watering at the mouth, as a fragrant aroma began to emanate from the pot. He had to almost physically restrain himself from snacking on food they'd need for the next couple of days. Although his hunger was great, it could never outweigh his hunger to learn more about his new student. He sat tightly, cross-legged and warming his hands over the open flame; he listened intently to Jake's story. Aiza took on quite a confused look for a moment as Jake explained to him where she hailed from. Although she seemed to know where she was from, it appeared that she wasn't entirely sure of its name. The concept of not knowing your homeland's name was somewhat alien to Aiza. The Arizu and the other clans took great pride in their heritage after all. However, Aiza's expression changed when he saw a warmth in Jake's eyes. A fondness as she mentioned the place of her birth and how she only knew it as 'Home'. There was something about her words that made Aiza smile too. "I do." He said. Aiza's eyes widened, shimmering with curiosity at the mention of the wandering swordsman and the style that he taught her. From what he could see she wielded a pair of machetes, which excited Aiza. When used well, they were brutal weapons, often favored by islanders just off of Kakin. The weapon was barely used outside of agricultural endeavours back on the Arizu Isles. "Phew..." Aiza jumped for joy internally, teaching nen from scratch was a lengthy process and he was glad to find out that hers just needed a quick polish and some refinement. Unsheathing his blades and passing them over to her, Aiza smiled. "I'll show you mine and you show me yours" He laughed. "These are Phobos and Deimos." He reached behind him and, after heaving the Macuahuitl from his back, rested his third weapon upon the ground. "And this is Setesh." Edited by Flash, May 19 2015, 08:10 AM.
