I think that even if the North Korean regime was somehow peacefully dismantled--which is just about impossible given the ideology at play and the size of their military--it would take a generation--that is to say 25-30 years--before they could be politically integrated with South Korea. The depth of difference between the culture and mindsets of the people of North and South Korea--not to mention their economic condition--is so vast that it makes the differences between West and East Germany look like as minor as the differences between northern and southern England by comparison.
Pretty much this. You're talking about two completely different societies here: probably the only thing common is heritage, and nothing else. Even East Germans were quite aware of the world they were living in, having access to West German television and all.

I dont know.

Ive read a bit into the North Korean Populaces view on the south koreans, and while theres a major difference in Ethics, Reunification isnt completely put out of the question. Of course, any non-south Korean military forces would have to leave south korea for north korea to consider so. They think they might be stabbed in the back.
North korea's infrastructure could be compared to that of some parts of the US in the 50s (The less developed ones) But if China could turn their fortunes so dramatically i think North korea could do it.
Anyway, A German style unification could just not work, partially because the north koreans know of nothing but dictatorship (Japan invaded korea and held it as a colonial possession for 40 years before WWII) They are so content with their life, its like 1984. The north koreans would either flood into south korea, or stay put and resist change!

The thing that sucks is that North Korea will collapse eventually--whether in 5 months or 50 years we don't know--and when it does it's going to be a catastrophe. At least maybe then we'll learn what's been really going on there all these years.

Reminds me of how in East Germany, people within their own country found out the extent of the Stasi's (secret police) spying. This is probably going to be on a far larger scale than the collapse of the Soviet Union and her allies.

But we won't learn everything, or even most things. Much of the evidence will be destroyed in the chaos.

Indeed. I think for North Korea now it's either do it like china (or cuba, or vietnam) soon or go the way of the USSR (and the rest of the Warsaw Pact).
In a country where all the good milk supplies are used for ice cream for the elite, I'm not hopeful they will reform in the face of change, in the worlds last 1960s-Style Communist state.

B29 indeed that is true, the communists in Russia and the nazis in Germany and even the US for 9/11, Iraq and Guantanamo bay have destroyed evidence.

I'm not even talking about that. I'm talking about the chaos of a government collapse. This happens a lot in history.

Meh, we know quite a bit about how the USSR worked, but then it was a global superpower and the largest country on earth.
The easiest comparison would be with Yugoslavia, because when that fell, a load of wars broke out over which racial groups got which areas. But even still, we know a lot how the society worked.
If your referring to the colonization period (southerm africa, native america) or ancient civilizations such as rome, greece, persia, egypt or the holy roman empire then its a completely different scenario, its another age.
