It's weird how Syria has almost completely dropped from the news recently. |

No it hasn't. There was a massive bombing in a government building killing over thirty on Saturday, including possibly six pro-Assad generals, and yesterday the leader of the more moderate rebels was killed in an air raid. This is the "Arab Spring's" worst nightmare, and you really don't have to look too hard in international coverage to see the reports of the carnage still going on. I recommend Al Jazeera, the Moscow Times (the only major Russian news service that isn't a Kremlin mouthpiece, and with an excellent English Language Section), and the BBC World Service for the best coverage of Syria. The war is turning into a World War One style stalemate with the government forces slowly devolving into another one of the militias, without stable leadership and the steady loss of professional soldiers, and with the moderate/secular rebel groups being hunted down by both government and Islamist rebel groups and with Hezbollah and Al Qaeda sending in forces. Without international leadership to stop the fighting, this war will not end any time soon, and the slaughter will only get worse as any remnants of a civil society in Syria are pounded into dust. Syria has gone from absolutist dictatorship to failed state in two years, and a failed state that close to Israel and in the heart of the Arab World is an extreme terror that has to be watched with the deepest concern.

I guess I should have just said that the Syrian Civil War isn't talked about much in the mainstream American press, just because I rarely see it mentioned on CNN or any of the other major news sites anymore. I probably should keep more up on the international coverage...I admit I mostly just watch CNN when I'm getting ready for work and that's how I've been getting my news lately. The Civil War is an absolute nightmare, and I don't see how it's going to end. I've also heard it described as a proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia. I have a feeling that this is at least partially true. I've also heard there is a bit of a falling out between the Saudis and the US, but I don't really know the details. I'd add more, but I'm running out the door as I type so I'll have to come back to this thread later. Also, as a quick note, I changed the name of the thread because the original title wasn't relevant anymore as we aren't "going in". |

CNN has very, very good news coverage, but in the last few years it has become very US centered. I guess for ratings down there. This is the golden age of information, as I tell my students, don't depend on one source of information. We have the entire world a few keystrokes away from us now. Don't be afraid to do a Google search for new sources of information. Even if the sources you are reading are obviously propaganda, read them, they do give a unique perspective. But I do suggest always try to find at least two perspectives to every major event you are interested in. I find it very interesting to read China's and Russia's take on Syria. I find their views incredibly cynical and bordering on the self-serving evil side, but it does pay to know where they are coming from. |

It's a shame really US TV news is so-rating orientated, but then again, it's the same for our newspapers. (I grew up with the very international BBC News)

We had CBC News. Great for comic relief and hockey scores, not so great for anything else |

I guess iTV and FIVE are like that here, but I hardly ever see anyone watch anything apart from the BBC, except if emmerdale and coronation street are separated by Edited by Square, Nov 19 2013, 12:34 PM.
