HAIL THE HORSE MASK
Quite a lengthy episode, this one. I've written it over the course of a few days, adding on small parts when they came to me.

Episode 6: VS Rattata & Pidgey

“Welcome in Cherrygrove City!” an old man said with a friendly smile on his face “Allow me to show you around.” Rico and Lyra got off Rhyhorn, and the former called the Rock Pokémon back into his Pokéball “Sure” he said. Lyra seemed somewhat surprised, considering Rico’s reaction to Dude “the last time I was here I barely got to look at this place.” “Perfect, please follow me, then.” The old man replied, and walked off, assuming the duo followed him “Here we have both the Pokémon Centre and the Pokémart, where you can heal your Pokémon and buy Pokémon related items respectively. Just about every town has these, and they’re very handy, so make sure to find out where they are. Over here is Route 30, where I assume you will be going after your visit here.” The old man continued. He walked onwards “And here is my house. I thank the both of you for your attention. Those youths these days never pay much attention to an old man like myself. Please accept this gift as a token of my appreciation.” He said, handing Lyra a small chip “This is a Town Map application for your Pokégear. I assume you have one?” “Umm…yes, yes I do.” Lyra answered. She grabbed her Pokégear from her bag, received the chip from the old man, mumbled a word of thanks and inserted the chip into the small machine.

“Thanks again, I’m sure this’ll be of great help!” she said. The old man smiled, waved the two farewell and went back inside his house. Rico turned around, but when he walked off in the direction of Route 30, he felt a smack on the back of his head “Ow! What was that for?” he said, obviously annoyed. He faced Lyra, who was standing in front of him, arms crossed, furiously tapping one foot “You knew about this, didn’t you?” “And what if I did?” was the stoic and careless answer “The poor man is always standing there, waiting for someone to come who needs his assistance. Everyone ignores him until finally someone shows up who seems to show interest, and you still manage to only think about your own possible gains!” “It’s great that you’re young and idealistic, but, in case you were planning on staying my companion for now, I ask you to just pay attention and watch me closely, and you might understand. That’s all I can say for now. Oh, and please remain as quiet as possible, I prefer not drawing a crowd.” Rico said calmly. Unimpressed by Lyra’s outburst, the once again turned around and made his way to Route 30 “You coming?” he nonchalantly proclaimed. Lyra followed reluctantly, not wanting to go against Elm’s wishes.

The rest of their trip passed silently, until they met two youngsters “You there, stop!” one of them yelled. Lyra and Rico both looked in their direction. In front of the trainers they saw a Rattata and a Pidgey, two small Pokémon indigenous to the area they were in “Yeah, you two! Consider yourselves challenged! A double battle between us and you!” Rico swallowed the need to correct the young boy’s grammar
“Look, Lyra, can’t you take them on?” he asked “I mean, let’s be honest, their Pokémon couldn’t possibly stand up to Rhyhor, and it’d be unfair if I were to use him, no?”

“Umm, well, I guess you’re right” Lyra responded. She figured there was something behind this, as she assumed Rico didn’t actually care about having a fair battle. She’d ask him later, if he didn’t tell her himself after the battle. For now, she had other things to take care of. “Go, Marill, Sentret!” she yelled, throwing two Pokéballs in the air “Hey! I thought this was a two versus two battle!” one of the kids said “Well, I only have a Rhyhorn. No matter how much you’ve trained your Pokémon, they simply wouldn’t be able to touch him. Therefore, Lyra here will be your opponent.” The youngsters seemed to get it “Well, I’m Joey, and this here is Mikey.“ the boy with the Rattata said “My Rattata is incredibly strong! I’m willing to bet it’s in the top percentage of Rattata in the world!” Rico looked amused. He walked over to a tree and leaned against it to watch the battle.

“Marill, Bubble! Sentret, Defence Curl!” Lyra started the battle. Rico was already impressed by the first moves. Using Bubble, a move that hits both opponents, to draw attention away from Sentret, allowing him to increase his defensive capabilities through Defence Curl is a sound move to start a battle with “Rattata, use Quick Attack on Marill!” “Pidgey, use Tackle on Marill!” the young boys ignored Sentret and instead focused their attention on Marill “Marill, dodge and hit ‘em with another Bubble! Sentret, one more Defence Curl!” Sentret, not having trained much under his new trainer reluctantly followed orders, obviously unhappy with being left out of the actual fight. Meanwhile, Rattata and Pidgey charged forward, yet not with the speed their trainers expected.

Rico smiled once again. Not only does Bubble hit both opponents, it also has a chance to slow down the target. This gave Sentret the time to prepare to enter the actual battle and immediately give him an additional edge over Rattata and Pidgey, who were being held off by Marill for the time being.
Rattata and Pidgey, both too slow to react to Marill’s next attacks were hit from point blank range.
“Now’s the time, Sentret! Tackle!” a grin appeared on Sentret’s face, content he could finally join the fray. Rico, noticing the Pokémon’s behaviour, decided to check out Sentret’s statistics with his arm computer. “A Brave nature, seems fitting.” He thought to himself, looking at the Normal Pokémon who rammed into Rattata and Pidgey.

The two boys, beaten in one attack, grabbed some money from their pockets and handed it over to Lyra. The practise seemed like a cruel bullying action from Lyra, but was a commonly accepted unwritten rule in the Pokémon world. Lyra, content with her win and the prize money seemed to have forgotten anger towards Rico from earlier that day.

“It’s getting late, let’s make our way over to Violet City.” Rico said, snapping Lyra out of her victorious daydreaming “You did well, you must be tired.” he continued “I’m impressed, using Marill’s weaker special attacks to slow down and distract your opponents while you prepared Sentret, with whom you had no prior battle experience, for a decisive blow.” Lyra blushed “Well, umm, it wasn’t THAT much of a…umm…strategic move, really.” she replied, glad to receive Rico’s acknowledgement “Well, like it or not, that was one impressive battle. I’m glad I submitted you to this little test.” Rico said “I knew there was something behind this. You wouldn’t have let me battle those two boys alone just because it would be a fair battle.” Lyra sighed “You know me too well. And that after barely a day! You’re good at this.” Rico responded with a grin “Now, let’s head to Violet City, I’m starving.”

Very good episode I would say, worth the wait. I like how you have been adding allusions to the games

Yep, I like it as well, as it's a great inspiration. It's like parts of the story are being written for me. So, yes, there's definitely plenty more where that came from. I also need to work on a title, at least for the thread.

Episode 7: VS Bellsprout I

The next morning, after the duo had spent the night in Violet City’s Pokémon Centre, Rico got up. The small room they got was still dark. While he sat up and allowed his eyes to get used to the dark he listened to the rain outside. The weather had completely changed from yesterday, which was a worrying development, considering the epicentre of the extreme weather was supposed to be at the other side of Johto. If the effects were already reaching Violet City, they had to hurry up and stop it. For now, though, challenging the Violet City Gym was the top priority. Rico took another look at the room. On the other side of his bed was Lyra’s, who was still asleep. In between the two beds was a small wooden table on which Lyra’s PokéGear rested. At the end of each bed stood a cupboard, containing the duo’s bags and spare clothing. The room had just one window that looked out on the main street of Violet City.

Rico, his eyes used to the dark, got up from his bed and walked over to his cupboard. He opened it and took out his arm computer and coat. He had prepared for the sudden change in weather by leaving on his pants and thermo shirt when he went to bed. After reattaching the computer to his arm and putting on his coat, he went over to the window and tried looking outside. It was still somewhat dark, and the street lights hardly produced enough light to overcome the bad weather of that day. Dissatisfied with what he was able to see, Rico turned around and went downstairs to take a walk around town. The Pokémon Centre wasn’t opened for the day yet, Rico noticed, considering the lights downstairs were still unlit. Before unlocking the door with the key the nurse had given him he put on a pair of gloves he pulled from his pockets, popped his collar, allowing him to reveal and put on his hood. Lastly, he pulled a piece of cloth from under his collar and covered his mouth and nose with it. While looking quite sinister, it’d at least keep him dry.

Having closed the door behind him, Rico took a look around to decide where he wanted to go. The Sprout Tower, one of Violet City’s attractions was to the northwest, and that is where he decided on going first. While strolling towards his destination he occasionally passed by a shimmering street light, revealing the entirety of his clothing. The green stripes that went up from his feet to his collar extend into the piece of face masking cloth. The stripes initially continue on the hood, but quickly split into two stripes each, with the inner ones re-joining in the middle, creating a total of three stripes that lead to the neck of the coat, where they split up and continue their initial pattern of two vertical stripes.

The rain was so dense it had blocked Rico’s sight enough so he hadn’t yet noticed the upcoming intersection. Considering he’d been walking towards the east so far, taking a right turn would take him to his destination, so he began walking in that direction. In the distance a tall shadow appeared in the distance. Rico wasn’t entirely sure if it was the rain playing tricks on his mind, but he could swear the tower was slowly swaying from side to side. He shook his head, assuming it was some kind of illusion and walked onwards.

When he reached the tower itself, he noticed another shadow, this time a smaller one in the form of a human ducking. Rico walked over to the figure, who seemed to be a young man. Considering there was insufficient light to see anything else, Rico couldn’t judge the age of the man.

“Some weather, huh?”

The man, not expecting to see someone this early, jumped up after hearing Rico’s sudden question. Light coming from the tower revealed him to be in his early twenties. His glasses were foggy and wet from the rain. Rico could almost feel the desperation flood from the man’s face. Taking off his glasses, the man stutteringly answered.

“Ehh, yeah, I ehh…guess you could say that, yeah.” Taking another look at Rico, his eyes widened “W…w…wait, you’re not going to rob me, a…are you?” Rico raised an eyebrow, having temporarily forgotten about the looks of his outfit. As soon as he remembered, he answered the man, whose facial expression had turned from desperate to frightened. He was clearly not having a good morning.

“Oh, you mean this? Well, I guess it kind of makes me look like a thief of some sorts - a shady character, at the least.” he said, investigating his own clothing “Don’t worry, though, I won’t hurt you. I was just taking a leisurely stroll through town when I noticed you here. I was just wondering what you were doing out here at this time in this weather.”

Another episode. I wanted to put in a bit more, but it ended up quite long, so I'll save the rest of the dialogue for the next episode. The whole "VS Bellsprout" episode will probably consist of three parts, just so you know. Oh, and I have an idea for a title. So yay.

Yep, I'll try and keep it a recurring theme during the story, and it'll be one of the (hopefully) small amount of things in which it differentiates from the manga, considering I have yet to notice any large weather changes in there.

EDIT: Changed the title, finally.

Same here, it's why it took me so long.

So, it's been ages since I've updated this, and since I had some more inspiration, motivation and time to write up some stuff, I've continued work on the next episode, so go me and shit.

So, I have no clue if anyone's been wondering about the progress on this story (probably not, I almost forgot about it myself), but I've just started rereading the original file of this story and have been editing some things. Why? Well, a few days, in order to get more involved with the community with the release of X and Y, I've created an account on the Serebii forums, and have been pondering about continuing this story over there. I still have a lot of ideas for this story, and the one that I want to follow it up with. The release of X and Y did give me some new ideas and inspiration to draw from. I expect the upcoming manga to stay away from my plans, as they take place across the planet anyway (or at least, I presume that to be the case).

So, yeah, if I decide to go through with this and start posting this on Serebii, I'll be sure to leave the link here for those who are interested.
