HAIL THE HORSE MASK
|
Prologue A loud ringing sound. Annoyed by having his nap interrupted so rudely, the young man grudgingly sat up and waited a bit to let his eyes get used to the dark of the room. Judging from the fact that he was on a boat, and the ship seemed to rock gently from side to side, he assumed the weather was calm that day. Remembering the incoming call, he shoved the left sleeve of his long, black coat aside in order to reveal some kind of computer attached to his arm. A small green light was impatiently flickering, and the small display next to it read “Tempe”. Still tired, he pushed a button near the flashing light and, while slowly standing up, muttered a greeting: “Rico.”. The screen lifted itself and showed the face of an old man. An amused sounding voice came from the speaker: “Did I wake you?”. A low grunt from Rico confirmed the old man’s suspicions. “So, I assume you haven’t arrived yet?” he continued. “Nope, but we should be arriving in Cherrygrove soon”, Rico answered “and I’ll make my way to New Bark immediately once I get there. By the way, what’s the rest doing?”. The old man frowned in order to show his conversational partner that he was thinking “Let me see, Aaron is in Hoenn right now, but he’ll join you eventually. Humbert went to Sinnoh to help resolve the crisis there, and Plute went with him. I don’t know the exact locations of Wladislaw and March, but Aria should be participating in the Goldenrod Bug Catching Contests, knowing her love for Bug Pokémon. You’ll probably meet up with her eventually. As for me, I have some business to take care of in Ilex Forest.”. Satisfied with the answer, Rico hung up, knowing Tempe and him had exchanged all the information they needed from each other. After he pulled back his sleeve, he reached for his belt and took out a small sphere. Through the transparent top half, he could see a sleeping mass of rock and muscle. He could vaguely make out a horn coming out of the large and heavy head. The cabin door slammed open, allowing the bright morning sunlight to flood into the small room, blinding Rico, forcing him to put up his arm to shield his eyes from the sudden flash. “We’re here.” was all the old sailor said to him. The two hadn’t been interacting much during the journey to Johto, and the lengths of the small amount of conversations they had were always short. As Rico stepped outside, he took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh scent of the small flowers that are famous for the city. As soon as he had jumped off the boat, had waved the sailor, whose name had slipped away from his mind, goodbye and had landed on the small beach near the edge of the city he made his way through Cherrygrove and leisurely strolled to Route 29 which would lead him to his next destination, New Bark Town, where he’d meet up with Professor Elm. As soon as he reached the other side of town, he once again reached for his belt to take out the sphere he was looking at earlier. Before throwing it in the air to let out the creature inside, he muttered “Well, let’s see what you can do, Rhyhorn.”. in mid-air, the ball opened, and the awakened Pokémon revealed itself with a roar. “Well, onwards to victory, I suppose.” Rico said, mounting Rhyhorn, who in turn began walking forward down the route. If the names of the characters seem a bit strange, don't worry, they all have been thought out carefully. |

I was going to write a longer episode, but it's getting late, so I'll be going to sleep now and write "VS Marill II" tomorrow. Episode 1: VS Marill I “Hrm, this must be it” Rico said, jumping off Rhyhorn and recalling him into his Pokéball. In front of him lay New Bark Town, where he’d meet Professor Elm, who would help him and get him started on his missions. Strolling through town, he noticed a large mansion in the distance. “Must be Gold’s place.” He thought to himself. Gold, one of the Pokédex holders of Johto, had left for Goldenrod City to compete in the recently opened Pokéathlon earlier, Rico remembered. Of course, if a respected Pokédex holder suddenly left to go somewhere in a hurry, it couldn’t have something to do with the opening of a petty sports centre, no matter how much money had gone into constructing it. However, with Professor Elm contacting the organization Rico was affiliated with, Gold’s mission and his own were most likely unrelated, Rico hoped. While Gold was a Pokédex holder and a respected battler, he was also renowned for being an inconsiderate cunt, which was something Rico, while he was quite a patient person, wasn’t exactly looking forward to dealing with. While thinking about all of this, Rico almost forgot about his destination, the New Bark Town Lab, and as soon as he remembered, he looked up, searching for the building he was looking for. After wandering around town for a bit, he finally reached the lab. Not seeing any sign of human life, Rico decided to walk up to the door and knock. However, when he reached for the door with his fist, his movements were frozen by a female voice. ”Umm…hi. So…umm…you must be here for umm…the Professor, right?” Judging from the tone, it was a young, rather shy girl. He turned around to take a look at her. She was quite small, and with the exception of two strands of hair, one of each side of her face, her hair was done in one large ponytail, reaching all the way down her back. She was wearing a short, red jacket which was opened to reveal a white shirt she was wearing underneath that. She also wore short jeans and a pair of worn sneakers. She in turn looked at Rico with her big, brown eyes, seeing a tall, slim young man with some facial stubble wearing mainly black clothing with green stripes running down from his throat along his chest down to his shoes with a long black coat over that. “Don’t worry, it’s temperature regulating clothing. It’s part of our outfit.” Rico commented. The girl’s eyes widened, realizing she had been staring at the strange man’s clothing, wondering why he wasn’t sweating profusely in the heat that had been in Johto recently. “And to answer your question: yes, I am in fact here for the Professor. Do you happen to know where he is? It’s quite urgent, and he’s expecting me.” Rico continued. “Oh, umm, well, there were two boys who were starting their journey through Johto, so we went off and gave them their Pokémon and showed them how to catch others. The Professor is still with them, but he should be here shortly.” the girl answered. Satisfied with the answer, yet annoyed at the Professor’s bad timing, Rico realized he had no idea who this girl was. Stretching out his hand towards the girl, he introduced himself: “By the way, I’m Rico. The organization I’m associated with has been contacted by the Professor about something he needed help with, so, well, here I am. Pleased to meet you.” The girl shook his hand with somewhat of a confused look on her face and replied with an introduction of her own: “Hi, I’m Lyra*, Professor Elm’s assistant.” After their hands lost contact, she continued “So, it’ll be a while before the Professor will be back. How about a battle? You and me, one on one.” *Lyra only appears in the HG/SS games, and is a replacement for Kris, or Crystal. In the manga, Crystal takes her look, therefore I find it safe to include Lyra herself as a character based on Lyra from the games, with a different look. |

Thanks for the kind words. I've been working on VS Marill II right now, and I'm nearly done. I'm taking a small brake, as I have to think about the ending of the episode a bit. |

So, screw double posting, it's late and I feel like posting a new episode: Episode 2: VS Marill II Confused by the sudden change of Lyra’s attitude, Rico stared a bit at her before agreeing to the battle. This would be the perfect opportunity to test out Rhyhorn. Considering he obtained the Pokémon in a trade, as part of a request that was going to bring him to Johto regardless of Professor Elm’s mission, he was unsure whether or not Rhyhorn would listen to him immediately. The Rock Pokémon seemed to obey during their walk to New Bark, but a battle is a completely different thing. Oh well, it’d have to do. He did bring one of his own Pokémon, his trusted friend whom he’d never leave behind, but looking at the girl, he estimated her battling skills to be below average, and using his final Pokémon would only end up drawing unwanted attention, despite the battle being over in an instant. No, Rhyhorn would have to do. “All right, I accept your challenge.” he finally replied, throwing Rhyhorn’s Pokéball in the air, calling him forward into battle. The stone rhino looked determined, much to Rico’s satisfaction. He might be able to beeline towards the rendezvous point with Rhyhorn’s original owner without needing to gain too many badges, although defeating all the Gym Leaders in Johto remained one of his plans on this journey. After he came to the conclusion that he’d need to write down all his objectives for this journey on a piece of paper that evening, he noticed a smile appearing on Lyra’s face. “Ha! Rhyhorn is both a Ground and a Rock type, meaning my Pokémon has a strong advantage!” Lyra happily exclaimed, throwing a Pokéball of her own in the air “Go, Marill!” she said, filled with self-confidence. In turn, Rico smiled, knowing the challenge had just increased. This was going to be fun. He slowly spread his legs into a fighting pose, stretched his right arm with his finger pointing forward and shouted: “Rhyhorn, let’s do this!” to which Rhyhorn growled, presumably to confirm to Rico that he was ready for battle. In reaction to this, both Lyra and her Marill took on their own battle stances, while the former shouted her first battle command: “Quick, Marill, use Bubble!” “Rhyhorn, Fury Attack!” Rico commanded. While small bubbles shot from Marill’s mouth into Rhyhorn’s direction, the latter lunged forward, popping the bubbles with his horn as he ran towards the small, blue mouse. Lyra, surprised that her type advantage didn’t bring down the heavy beast, yelled out another command: “Marill, quick, jump up!” a quick reaction from her Pokémon prevented it from being smashed by the rampaging Rhyhorn, who, after discovering his target had disappeared, looked around in confusion. “Now, use Bubble again!” Lyra shouted. Marill responded quickly by releasing another volley of bubbles. Rhyhorn, too slow to react, was hit hard, and stood shaking, but looked determined to keep on fighting. Rico, concerned that a defeat might undermine his authority over Rhyhorn, yelled out his next command: “Sandstorm, go!” Rhyhorn reluctantly agreed, and started spinning around. Noticing the doubt in his Pokémon’s actions, Rico quickly came up with a plan. His satisfaction with this plan grew when he saw both Lyra and her Marill peering into the dust clouds, looking for Rhyhorn. “Take aim!” Rico announced. Both Lyra and Marill froze in anticipation. “Now, Rock Blast!” he continued, as a barrage of rocks flew from the sandstorm, hitting Marill, who wasn’t anticipating a long-ranged attack from a physically oriented Pokémon like Rhyhorn. Disappointed with her defeat, Lyra recalled Marill, who was unable to continue the battle, to her Pokéball. “Well, that certainly didn’t go as expected…” she sighed “You can’t base your entire strategy around type advantages. Surprise is a great strategy to utilize when used correctly.” Rico answered. Lyra looked at him with a confused look on her face. He continued his explanation “I assume you weren’t expecting Rhyhorn to use something different from a physical attack, am I right?” Lyra nodded “Therefore, you felt safe keeping your distance, using your Water type attacks to your advantage. Now, I noticed you were only using Bubble, a relatively weak attack that can be broken quite easily. Using Sandstorm not only meant I could block the bubbles, it also allowed me to prepare my surprise attack - Rock Blast.” Lyra looked impressed, and began to understand why she was defeated, despite her initial advantage. “Well, thanks for the lesson, I guess. So, what were you meeting the Professor for, again?” she asked, changing the subject. “Ah, well, ehrm, you see, the Professor asked me here to help him out with ehrm…well, it’s kind of a touchy su-” Rico muttered, knowing fully well Professor Elm had asked him to keep his mission a secret to anyone outside of his organization. He could mention one of his other two intentions, to defeat all the Gym Leaders is Johto or meeting up with Steven Stone, Rhyhorn’s original trainer, in order to reverse the trade and complete their research, but considering that meeting was coincidentally also part of Elm’s secret mission, and his other objective was completely unrelated to the Professor, putting him in quite the awkward situation. “Hey there, you must be Rico!” Saved by the bell. Or the Professor, in this case. “Sorry it took me so long, those youngsters really needed all the help I could give them. I almost walked them all the way to Cherrygrove! Anyway, let’s head inside, I’ll brief you on your missio-” Elm stopped momentarily, noticing the girl standing near Rico “Oh, Lyra, I didn’t see you standing there…well, ehh, could you ehh…” watching the two interact made Rico think about how well these two fit together. The Professor continued: “Well, ehh, Rico and I have some things to discuss. Could you, ehh, you know, if you wouldn’t mind?” Lyra, somehow getting the vague hints from the Professor, made up an excuse about being hungry and leaving for home. “Well, I sure talked myself out of that, didn’t I?” Elm had directed his attention back to Rico. “Ehrm, yeah, sure, great job.” Rico answered with an awkward smile on his face. “Anyway, let’s go inside, shall we?” The Professor continued, opening the door to his lab. Rico followed and closed the door behind him. |
