(Open for guest posts, so if you want to reserve a character, or talk about a character idea, before signing on, just go ahead)

The characters presented below are there to get your imagination running, and show some of the things that are possible in this setting. They are not "must haves" for this game.

If you'd like to use some - or all - aspects of one of these characters, post here. (Names and avatars below are only suggestions. Change them if you like.) As far as I am concerned these characters are on a first come, first served basis.

While some Faction allegiances and long-term hotel stays are written into these character suggestions, you will have to follow the normal rules, even if you play one of these characters. That is, joining a Faction requires a little bit of writing, and most characters should be relatively new to the hotel. (The one exception is Cheryl, who just wouldn't work well as Sally's mother, if she hadn't been around the hotel for a while.)

Marisol De Mornay - Steampunk elf
Hotel staff - well-mannered, shy, in need of friends
Posted Image
Marisol claims she was a perfectly normal girl from a wealthy family, until she had a terrible accident shortly before her 17th birthday. Her mind was intact, but her body was close to giving out, so a doctor of her father's acquaintance transferred her mind (or her brain - Marisol is not quite certain about the details of the procedure) into an artificial body. But while the doctor was still in the process of giving her a real, human face again, Marisol ran away, afraid of what she had become.

While this is the story Marisol tells of her past, it is possible that she is actually a completely artificial person who has just become convinced - by herself or by someone else - that she once was a real girl. It is also possible that she is at least a little bit insane.

What is certain is that her skin is cool, she never feels hunger or thirst, and needs sleep very rarely (averaging two hours per night). Something in her chest beats at a constant, never-changing pace of twenty beats a minute. Marisol does not feel heat or cold or pain as strongly as a "normal" person would, except on the human-looking part of her face.

Luiz Hernandez da Silva - Con Man
Oligarch - handsome and well aware of it
Posted Image
Luiz always got by on his good looks and fast tongue. Until the day he got someone drunk to get his car and keys, but learned something he had not expected. He pushed and shoved his mark to the door the guy had mentioned, and, once in, he discovered a gold mine.

His fast tongue and vivid imagination got him into the Oligarchs with flying colours, no one suspecting that the information he sold them was almost completely bogus, garnished with only a few things he had overheard here and there during his stay at the hotel.

One of these days he'll find himself a stupid rich guy who will provide him with a truckload of gold or diamonds for some information he just pulled out of his hat and he will be leaving the hotel laughing at everybody. Or maybe switch allegiances and party with the Hedonists for the rest of his life. Something like that - if you take his word on it.

Sally Mariano - "It girl"
Hedonist - sugar and spice, and everything nice
Posted Image
Sally always knew her dad was rich and important, but she never learned the full truth until her boyfriend had a fatal accident. That night she overheard her dad telling her stepmom that "the guy wasn't good enough for my little darling". Digging deeper she discovered that her dad owned everybody in town - perhaps the whole country. Police, politicians, the media, her mom - and her.

Being the most popular girl around was fine by Sally, but being the daughter of a mafia don was not. Having as much fun as she liked was a good thing, but Sally does have more of a conscience than her dad ever had.

But now she has found a place where she can be all she ever knew, the life of the party, the girl everyone wants to be or be with, and still be far far away from a world run by her dad.

She is still not certain what the medical records she found in her father's desk mean, but she suspects they are connected to the fact that she is faster and stronger than any girl her age and never had a hangover in her whole life. Sometimes she wonders, but for now she just considers it a nice bonus.

Archibald "Archie" McGruder - War wizard and monster slayer
Guest - tough guy with a heart of gold
Posted Image
Archie was the meanest young punk in a mean town, until the law caught up with him and he had to skip town. After some travels he joined his world's version of the Foreign Legion, because he thought it would be just the right place for a guy like him who liked to fight and didn't like to lose a fight. But once he was in, he quickly discovered that they taught him more than to fight - they taught him discipline and how to channel his inner fire into fire magic. But one day, when his company was hunting a fierce dragon in Northern Africa, his commanding officer decided that a poorly defended village they had camped at would make a great bait for the beast they were hunting, But Archie would have none of that, and one thing lead to another - i.e. his commanding officer was dead, the villagers escaped, half of Archie's unit was slaughtered by the dragon, and Archie was on the run.

In Archie's world modern technology and magic exist side-by-side with ferocious mythical beasts. He claims that he once slew a Griffin armed with nothing more than a dull knife, and while that may be an exaggeration (or an outright lie), Archie certainly knows how to handle himself in combat.

His magic allows him to manipulate fire, but he needs at least a small source of it. Even a lit match will do if he needs to create a great roaring fireball.

Quote: "Move aside. Let a pro handle this."

Cheryl Evans (formerly Mariano) - Barmaid
Hotel staff - trying to forget
Posted Image
Cheryl was a small-time model and B-movie actress who caught the eye of a powerful man. She didn't know much about him, but he showered her with gifts until the day she could say "no" no longer and became Mrs Mariano.

When she started talking about having a child her husband readily agreed, but insisted on an IVF procedure - to allow the doctors to make certain everything was all right with their child's genes before Cheryl became pregnant, or so he told her. Cheryl didn't know the first thing about genetics, but she knew her husband knew all the right people. She agreed.

Three months after giving birth to a baby girl she discovered why her husband had insisted on the procedure, why the doctors had given her all those foul-smelling things to drink and all those pills. A phone call that distracted her husband and an open drawer where enough for her to glimpse the truth. She was just part of an experiment to create the perfect enforcer for her husband's criminal organization.

Cheryl fled, but her little darling was too well guarded for her to take her away from the monster she had called husband. Some days she still misses her, wonders what became of her poor little Sally, if she shouldn't have stayed for her girl's sake.

Quote: "You'd think over twenty years is enough to forget, but it's not that easy."

Edward Alan Tucker (the 3rd) - Ruthless businessman
Oligarch - Greedy manipulator
Posted Image
There are three things in the world Edward truly loves: Money, power, and himself. Everyone else is just a stepping stone on his way up, up, and up. In his time he has bought politicians, manipulated the stock markets, and taught people some rather (literally) painful lessons - and all just because he could.

But some things are even beyond Edward's control. When the stock market crashed he took all the money he could get (most of it not actually his, but rather his for the taking at that moment) and made a run for it. His wife was becoming rather bothersome anyway, complaining more than she should about his affairs and threatening a divorce that would have been rather bad publicity. A fresh start was something Edward didn't mind - only that he didn't expect to find it in a place outside the reality he knew. Right now he plans to lie low for a while, before he goes back and starts new - armed with all the knowledge and resources he can gather - which might take a while.

Taylor O'Toole - Entrepreneur
Guest - looking for an opportunity
Posted Image

Taylor has always been in the restaurant business. Her father owned several bars and clubs and she grew up in that world. When her father died he left most of his business to Taylor's two brothers and all she inherited was a small restaurant, despite feeling that she had the most talent for the business in her family.

Over time - and with long hours of hard work - Taylor managed to turn her restaurant into one of the hottest and most successful bars in town, outdoing her brothers at every turn. All that ended when her club burned down one night. Of course Taylor had enough insurance to cover her losses, but she wanted some time to think things over, come up with ideas for an even better place to open next. And that was when she found the hotel.

Maybe this place could do with a new bar, something better than a pub.

Quote: "That's no way to run a proper bar!"

Ragnar Sigbjörnson - Viking explorer
Guest - inquisitive and thirsty for knowledge
Posted Image
Ragnar was always a bit of an outsider among his seafaring, conquering people. He knows how to wield an axe and a shield in combat, but he was always more interested in knowledge than plunder. Learning more about different people has always been more intriguing to him than fighting them.

In his travels he has seen a lot, from the great city of Babylon to the islands of the Caribbean and picked up a few skills along the way. Ragnar speaks several languages, knows how to read and write (not a given where he comes from), can play the lute, navigate a ship, and knows some mathematics and philosophy.

One day, in an ancient temple high up in the Andes, he came across a bronze door carved with a snake biting its own tail. And while his comrades were busy looting the city they had just conquered, Ragnar laid his hand on the door and pushed it open, to find himself in a place more strange than anything he had ever seen before.

Mary Okuda - Vampire b....
Anarchist - hungry for your love blood
Posted Image
Mary is angry. Angry at the father who abused her, angry at the mother who fled into a bottle rather than confronting her husband over what he did to their daughter, angry at the vampires who made her one of their own instead of letting her bleed to death as she had intended.

Mary hates everyone and everything - but at least now her parents are out of the picture, thanks to her vampiric strength and rage. But she still hates them. The one person she would hate the most - if she had the courage to admit it - would be herself. She was weak and that's why everything happened (or so some part of her believes), but she is weak no more.

Mary doesn't give a shit about the hotel or what goes on there. It's a perfect hideaway for her, and that's all. No one from her world can find her there while she rests, and she can always return to her world to feed... and maim... and slaughter... and torture... and...

Not being allowed to feed on the other guests is starting to get to her, but she doesn't know the place and the staff well enough yet to risk being thrown out of such a perfect hideaway. If only she could be certain her speed and strength would be enough to stand up to the strange people there...

Karl Alvers - Avenger
Guardsmen - Grumpy old lawgiver
Posted Image
Karl used to be a cop until they kicked him out. Officially it was because of his age. Getting too old for the job they said, not keeping up with modern methodology they said. Bull... Karl knows why it happened. He was too direct for them, too much interested in results. Everyone else just wanted to meet the latest target the bureaucrats had set for them and look good doing it. Not him.

But now he has found a place where the bureaucrats won't hassle him, where there are people who think like him, and where his skills are seriously needed. It has to be one of those damn Anarchists. Or maybe one of the Hotel staff. Nobody would suspect them, and they have access everywhere. God knows how many skeletons they have in some cupboards the guests don't know about.

Quote: "Old? Nah! Experienced is the word you are looking for. Now move aside, sunshine."

Kimberley "Kim" Sun - Young mage
Guest - waiting for the right time to go home
Posted Image

In Kim's world people with special abilities always existed, but decided to hide their powers from the mundane world. But there were schools, academies, dojos where those born into powers were trained and taught to use their abilities responsibly. Kim's uncle ran one of the most respected of those schools and she lived a happy life there. Until the day her uncle was killed in front of her eyes by other 'wizards'.

There were always a few around who thought their abilities gave them the right to rule, that staying in the shadows was a mistake. They decided to have their way, and dealing with the 'wizards' who adhered to the tradition of secrecy was their first step.

Kim ran - ran to the place her uncle told her to go to if anything should ever happen to him.

Magic suggestion #1: Kim's powers center around probabilities. She can foresee the outcome of a coin toss with 99.99% accuracy and is almost as good when it comes to the roll of a die. To predict more complex events she needs to use Tarrot cards, tea leaves, or some other traditional divination method as a concentration aid, and the reliability of her predictions is a lower. but once she has predicted the outcome of an event she can sometimes change it. That is a skill she still has to master completely, but she can do small things, like increasing the odds of someone's shoelaces coming untied and that person tripping over them, or increasing the odds of an elevator being there when she needs it to something approaching certainty.

Magic suggestion #2: Something more "traditional" like control over a certain element, perhaps water or air.

Timothy Miller - Werewolf
Guest - brooding and carefree
Posted Image
Tim never wanted to be turned into a werewolf, but then, who ever did? He had a good job in the city, money, women, a penthouse - and then all that vanished.

The change only came over him two or three nights a month, but Tim knew he was a changed man. The outdoors called to him, drew him to trees and earth and all the smells he had never noticed before. He couldn't find that in the city, so he quit his job, moved to the countryside, lived a quiet life for a while until the hunters found him. He had never done any harm, but they still thought him a monster, chased him, shot at him, until her found a door in the middle of nowhere.

And now the nights are always filled with a full moon, the change comes over him every night, the grounds are endless, and he can be free.

Tim knows the creature he turns into at night is dangerous, could seriously harm - perhaps even kill - someone, so he tries to avoid close contact with anyone and tries to keep his condition hidden, as much as he enjoys the opportunity to let it all out.

Jane - The girl with a hundred... thousand... million faces
Guest - Looks can be deceiving
Posted Image
Jane was conceived in a test tube and born in a lab, but she turned out to be far more than her creators ever could imagine.

Once her creators discovered she was far more than a reservoir of mutable cells, they decided to hide her, raise her, and see what she really was, or rather what her body was. As the scientists at the lab though a "normal" girl would be easier to handle, they raised Jane as if she was their daughter. "Would you please give a little blood for daddy" was so easy to say.

But when the lab burned down, Jane fled and found herself in a pretty strange place on the other side of the emergency exit.

Jane's body is fluid, mutable. She can turn herself into anyone she likes, provided it's a woman. (Her chromosomes make her a woman, no matter what the rest of her DNA says.)
Jane can stay in the same shape for about 12 hours, before her body forces a change on her. If she changes shape within that twelve-hour window she resets the clock, gains another twelve hours before the next involuntary change, but chances are she wakes up every morning with a face she has not seen in the mirror when she went to bed. She can return to a previous form, but only after some rest, so she might be the same woman every morning, or every afternoon, or every night, but never all the time.
