The people were assembled, all sitting in wooden pews like in church. They were waiting for the judge to appear. His name was Judge Carrion, a not-so-reassuring name for a trial of such importance. Not for 15 years had a mage of Edward's level gone AWOL.

Judge Carrion entered the courtroom, his robes billowing behind him as he sat upon his high chair with that smug superiority often found on the faces of such people. He relished the chance to cover such an important case. It wasn't important for a the survival of anything. It was important because of the man involved. A man who should have known better than to dabble with the work of Genes and cavort with Demons.

Suddenly, the doors burst open and there stood the man, flanked by two men and surrounded by a halo of light. An arrogant smile painted his lips. The prosecution found it odd that Edward was smiling, considering the amount of evidence against him. The maximum penalty awarded for defiling the work of Genes was death. The removal of the defilement. But Edward was powerful as far as mages went. The Guildsmen of Hydric found nothing wrong magically with Edward but then again...he could run rings around most magicians.

The prosecution called its first witness: the spectre-girl Edward was known to travel with. The prosecution lawyer shuffled his papers then got to his feet.

"Ms, can you ascertain for us the true nature of Edward Morgan? What was he like in every-day life?" The prosecution asked, a confident look on his face. Edward still wore that arrogant smile that had seemed to welded itself to his face.

"Sir Edward was, on the surface, a nice man. He was sweet and practical and very goal-orientated. But underneath this was the capacity to murder. To kill. Edward was ordered to kill someone sometimes and he did so without much interest. I feel that it is this that lead him to commit such an atrocious act. The Unity wore down his moral make-up until he became a crazed murderer." The little girl spoke, her voice dead level. The prosecution looked a bit unsteady at the allegation just levelled at his own legal standpoint. Edward's smile broadened and looked meaningfully at the prosecution's lawyer.

"Would you say that Edward would've made that decision had he not been in the service of the Unity?" The prosecution asked, trying to get her to say that he was really a power-hungry monster that wanted to become immortal for one purpose: Conquest.

"That depends. Would Edward willingly destabilize his soul so much for immortality? I think...I know, that there's something dark in Edward. I saw it in him when I met him. An unknown, dangerous creature that is nothing like the man on the outside. Somehow, that woman drew out the worst in him and cast him down." The little girl spoke with a passion now, her voice brimmed with sympathy for Edward. For the first time since meeting Bedlam, Edward felt that tug at his heart strings. What was it called? How did it work? The smile slid from Edward's face as he grappled with this new sensation. The little girl looked at him with a small smile on her face. Something inside Edward twinged.

"The Bedlam? A rogue Demon couldn't do that. He made the decisions himself. What do you say to this?" The prosecution said in a very cold voice. It spoke much about how the two lawyers were fast losing ground in this case. The jury may think that Edward was in need of help. That he should have the demon blood magically purged from his body.

"The Demon-Woman was very alluring. I could feel her influence through my connection to Edward. It was like...having your heart tied to her. Like you owed her something." The little girl explained. Edward looked at her and felt something squirm in his stomach. Was he ill? He felt very odd indeed seeing this little girl looking after him. No...it was the woman inside that Cadaver that was looking after him. Why? Why was she doing it?

The prosecution looked wide-eyed at the little girl then seemed to admit defeat. He turned to his cohort who nodded, changing the papers to another leaf.

"No further questions your honour. Instead I'd like to call a certain member of the Guild of Hydric...the master of it." the prosecution lawyer asked, watching as the little girl left the stand. She sat near Edward, her little face sombre. Edward's arrogant smile was once-again in place, although with slightly less enthusiasm. The face practically dropped off when a man dressed in dark blue robes entered. He had a rather dark look about him, one that preceded evil. He was even wearing a mask made of cloth mache.
Edward, suddenly felt afraid. Not because of the Leader of the Guild but because he felt something stir within his soul. It was a fluctuation in his soul. he little girl got up and placed her hands about his waist in a comforting hug.

She looked into his soul then recoiled. What the hell?! He'd essentially turned himself into a mordicant! He'd actually taken his soul, shattered it and replaced it with a force-grown one. A course of action was already forming in her mind.

"Interjection your honour! I know what Edward's done to himself!" The little girl shouted suddenly. Edward looked round, his eyes fearful. "Sir Edward Morgan is a Mordicant! We must exorcise the hateful soul from him!" The little girl shouted.

Everyone's eyebrows contracted at that. But Edward's didn't. His shot up in surprise until he bowed down to her head level and glared into her eyes.

"What are you doing you little twerp? We both know full well that Mordicants have nothing to do with this!" He hissed. Then Edward straightened up, a haunted look in his eyes. It was all slotting into place...all the pieces. But the parts weren't assembled yet. One more piece was needed to complete the turn of events.

"Yes Edward...I was inhabiting that magician you killed. I was using him as a puppet. I always intended you to get here. I just didn't realise that you were so heavy-handed...Editor." The little girl whispered back. Edward began to tremble, fear coursing through him. He knew it. Angel had intended this from the very beginning. She planned to make him immortal and make him a murderer just so she could destroy The Editor. Edward stirred with unbridled love for Angel at that moment. Finally, someone was coming to save him...She knew about the other side of him...

"You have proof of this ms?" Judge Carrion spoke. Edward bashed his fists so hard into the table that there were dents. His mouth was foaming with rage and his face was contorted in rage. His normally Violet eyes had turned a nasty shade of crimson. His hair darkened into an even darker blue. Before he looked like an old man but now he truly looked like the Avatar of some great God. He was extruding magic too, one tenth of his magical power. It was so strong that a glass next to him broke.

"I would rather die! You will never destroy me puny humans! I am the rage, and the rancour and the bile and the hatred and the obsession of man! I am eternal! Killing me will accomplish nothing! You hear me? NOTHING!" Edward raged, surprising everyone in the room. Nobody could deny that he wasn't possessed of something. Everyone who'd met Edward would know instantly that he wasn't that sort of person. "I am your new God! Forsake your weakened angels and demons! I am the omnipotent! I shall never die! I am immortal to all mortal beings, I am eternal, I will smite anyone that defiles the grace of the Editor!" Edward continued. The halo of golden light that was the Nesbitt Cage was beginning to wine down. Suddenly, with a sharp retort, one of the lines snapped and a mage fell to the floor. People recoiled, realising that they were no-longer safe from Edward's wrath.

Angel, quite calmly, reached forth and hugged Edward around his waist. Before he could shake her, she pressed her soul into his body.

What greeted her was a towering dark monster, all claws and fangs, a shapeless shadow within Edward's soul. It was snarling and ripping at the white shadow that was Edward's soul. They were ripping chunks out of each other. The white shadow was considerably smaller and was being beaten back but it still fought on bravely.

When the white shadow beheld Angel it raised its fist and punched the Black Shadow from it. The white shadow raised its hand and held up its hand. Within the hand, a glowing white sword appeared. Suddenly, the Shadow took shape and formed a regular Edward, garbed in glowing white armour with gold trim. His head was bared and his long mane of white-blue hair could be seen. A long white cape the same shade of white as the shadow flew behind him.

The black shadow also collated into a black-armoured Edward. His hair was navy blue and his eyes red. His face was like soft leather and his mouth full of metal-grey fangs. He wielded a black sword.

The two giants met with a sharp detonation and the swords smashed together. The giants resumed their fight with equal footing. Angel just wished she could help Edward...

Edward raised his sword above his head in a vicious two-handed blow. The Editor let it glance of his shield and retorted with a one-handed strike of his viciously spiked chain. Edward dodged then smashed The Editor in the face with his shield.

The Editor fell to the floor and did a back-roll onto his feet and brought his chain to bare. Edward didn't see it coming and the chain succeeded in embedding itself in the armoured warrior's leg. He roared with pain and slashed across, cutting the ligaments of the chain around his foot. The chain was but shortened and came around for another slab at Edward. This one bashed against his shield. Edward deliberately fell as the chain hit the shield and made it sink into the floor. Edward, using his split-second advantage, brought his blade down on The Editor's shield arm.

There was a second of sparks before it was the blood's turn to spray. The Editor, more like a rabid animal, let go of his chain and smashed Edward with his gauntleted fist. Edward was dazed for a second and The Editor took this advantage and kicked him a good ten feet back into a tree. Edward's will was failing. If this continued, he would lose this fight!

"Edward! Remember what you said to me in Vulcan! Tell him why you're not a murderer...not like him!" Angel shouted, completely ignoring the beasts rising from the ground with jewel-like eyes and wolf-like bodies. She turned and saw the cretins with almost abstract interest. The beasts would do nothing unless the Editor told them to. He was a bit preoccupied getting his chain out of the ground.

"I've had 24 years to decide how to kill you. But death isn't the option I take. It's the option I'm forced to take. If I let you live, you'll only kill more people. And so, for them, it fall upon me to kill you Editor. May Genes have pity on your miserable soul." Edward condemned, taking a fighting stance. The sword glowed but more brightly in the darkness. The Editor raised his chain and shot it towards Edward. Without much interest, he slashed at the chain. Energy shot up it and broke the ligaments between the spikes. The pieces clanged to the floor ominously.

"No! No you can't do this to me!" The Editor shouted, backing away from the shining aura of magic that was shooting off Edward. You can't! I lent you my power...my knowledge! You were a better mage because of me!" Still, Edward continued his inextricable march towards The Editor. He quivered under the violet-eyed gaze of his master.

Edward held up his blade without much problem. He looked down at the Editor. There was more than a flicker of pity in his eyes as the dark version of himself cowered for his life. But Edward knew that mercy was a luxury unaffordable by people in his profession. Was he still going to be executed after? He wasn't going to kill The Editor. It would be wrong. Instead he would set him free. Abolish his sins from their body.

Edward drew back the blade and sheathed it, offering a hand to The Editor. He looked at Edward's hand then smashed it away with a hateful glare. It was obvious that the Editor wanted Edward to become like him, to become a murderer. That was Edward's victory. He'd shown The Editor mercy. His greatest enemy was before him and he let him live. Edward's face was expressionless as he picked up The Editor and opened a gateway out of his soul with a finger. He pushed the Editor out of it then turned to Angel.

"I am once-again the only entity in this body. Thank you Angel. Thank you for everything." Edward smiled, receiving the hug from a sobbing Angel with a small smile on his features. For once he didn't see the little girl but the sobbing woman's spectre with her arms about his chest. He pulled her up into his arms, for she was too overcome to walk, and walked towards the gate.

The courtroom was full of screams when he came back to himself. There were many shouts of 'monster' and 'demons!'. Edward looked around and saw a spitting and raging beast in from of him. The Editor. Second round? Not likely: he was shackled and held as Edward returned to himself. Nobody could deny that the thing came from Edward: they looked exactly alike save for the hair and eyes.

The court was in shock! Not only had Edward exorcised his own demon but he'd done it with the help of only one little girl! Such a thing was unprecidented! He'd have had to understand The Editor perfectly before exorcising him.

Edward was smiling happily until a wave of dizziness overcame him and he fell backwards, snoring loudly as The Editor was arrested for the crimes Edward was accused of committing. The little girl looked at Edward's sleeping form with a small smile upon her features. She did love the way he snored.

"What is his name?" Arke asked one of his lowers.

"Shouldn't you be more concerned about the distress spell sent by Si-"

"I know how to deal with my own men. Do not tell me how to do my job." Arke spat at the lowly mage. He was only a pitiful Second Class. "Now tell me his name."

"Edward Morgan, sir. But why are you looking into his case, while there is the possibility of a new land?" The mage asked Arke, who shot a look of disgust at his underling.

"Genes was no fool. She left behind prophecies to protect those who would listen. I know what lays across that border, and I already know that Sin was doomed the moment he took his mission." The solider looked shocked. "Yes, Sin is going to die." He said straight faced. "We must obey the wishes of Genes, and do nothing to prevent this. He is... replaceable."

Arke started taking long strides, eager to see the one the called Edward. "It seems, sir, that there was some havoc at Edwards trial. We should--"

"I told you, I can do my own job..." Arke spat at the mage.

"But sir, he is an even lower rank than I am! And he tampered with forbidden magics. He isn't worth your ti-"

"Solider, I could leave you as nothing more than a blood spatter on this wall. You are lucky I haven't checked the Script of Genes today, for if I had found out that that was the case, I would have no issue pulling apart the very fabrics of your being. I am sure that your wife and offspring would also be very sad and angry, then I would have to kill them too, so that they stayed quiet, and so that they wouldn't harbor a grudge against me over the years. Now go arrange me a meeting with Sir Edward Morgan, now!" Arke stared down the mage with his blood red eyes, as he practically ran to try and go see what he could do.

Edward was woken to several nervous stares. The Spectre-woman, Angel, smiled at him and he was happy. For that instant, he could believe that it was the first time she'd been raised. It was good that Edward had given her a body. She was legally living and therefore had a right to life even if it was only half of one...

Another face wavered into view. Edward couldn't quite place anything about it until he saw those horrid red eyes.

Edward, acting with cat-like military skills, flipped over onto his feet, taking the fighting stance he'd been taught. He then saw the rest of the face and relaxed. He stared behind the stranger and saw that the Editor was safely restrained by several armed men, each with glowing weapons much like the sword at Edward's side.

Edward was still dazed for a second before he snapped out of it and realised who he was looking at.

"Sir Edward Morgan, Unity Mage 3rd class, Sir!" Edward shouted, snapping into the formal salute used by the Horundian army. Edward had only seen him once but did recognize the forms and titles of rank. Angel stepped into a salute too only it was slightly more mocking than Edward's.

"Sir, after much deliberation the jury found Edward Morgan innocent and found that entity that looks a lot like him guilty. You're just in time for the sentencing." A fussy-looking attendant told the man of note. Edward's eyes pricked with tears when he discovered his ruling. He was innocent. He'd never willingly defied the work of Genes...did that mean he was no-longer immortal? Had that been syphoned out of him with The Editor? Probably...That would make The Editor a demon because he had only demon blood in his veins.

"If you think I'm just gonna accept defeat you're wrong...Dead Wrong!" The Editor laughed, the manacles growing red-hot and melting onto the floor. The guards tried to attack The Editor but were blocked by his Air Shield move.

"Genes dammit I thought this was over!" Edward growled, trying to absorb Mana then discovering that the Nesbitt Cage was still in effect. Fantastic, now he couldn't fight the infernal 1st class mage in any way. The Editor would be classed as a 1st class mage because he could use both a sword and magic to good effect so Edward stood a chance of beating him with Magic.

Edward's skin was blistering from the magical power that was coming off this guy! He watched as The Editor drew his black-bladed sword and lay about three men with one swipe. Edward looked at Angel then sat down, hoping that she could break the cage in time. There was a commanding officer here...he should be able to do something!

"Are you gonna summon the guard or do I actually get an amusing fight today? I've heard that humans tend to run away in a tough fight. Gonna run humans?" The Editor smiled, throwing down his blade in a vicious strike that decapitated the man next to him. Edward heard a magical-sounding twang and felt some of the magic return to his body. Angel was able to break it. Whether that was good or bad Edward couldn't decide.

"I'm not running Editor. Give me ten minutes and I'll crush you..." Edward smiled, as the Mana echoed the noise of another wire snapping. The cage was roughly 27% destroyed now. Edward could barely hold his head up but if nobody else would fight The Editor, he would have to. He wished he wouldn't have to...

Spinning through the air, weilding a long curve ended blade, Arke locked his eyes on the Editor. Throwing his sword down into the ground next to him, Arke landed next to it, facing the demon in the face, and standing just in front of Edward. "Supreme Unity Mage, Lord Arke." He said to Ed without looking back. He stared the demon in the face, his silver eyes piercing and unmoving. "I will handle this one Edward." He said holding his hand back before pulling his sword out of the ground.

"Are you going to go back to the Black Plane, or do I have to force you. You revolting demon, one who would break the law of our Lord, and commit such heinous acts against Genes, for the evil of Armej..." His voice almost hissing at the name. "Get Edward out of here. I would like to meet with him later." He said with no fear looking away from the demon. Since the moment he had entered the room, the demon had done nothing, his glance just fixed on Arke and more specifically his sword.

Arkes men quickly ran into the room, ready to help Edward.

"You wield a blessed blade. You cannot hope to defeat me with a normal one!" The Editor boasted, his fingers tracing his own, leaving a corona of mana around the blade. "You are the Supreme Mage? You were very brave to attack me but I'm afraid that wins no perchance with me. I refuse to return to my birthplace." The Editor snarled, leaping back and taking a stance, his glowing blade held in a dangerous arc about chest height so the enemy would run into it if he wasn't careful.

The Editor then transferred the blade to the other hand and clicked his fingers with the other.

There was a sharp detonation and a fiery blast reaching a meter in every direction. Angel pulled Edward clear just as Arke's men came to pick him up. Angel gladly transferred custody of Edward to the soldiers and concentrated on summoning up her own strength to combat the Editor.

"Oh come now...don't tell me you died already!" The Editor chortled, raising a hand to the heavens. Black mist collated in his hand then exploded outward in a choking cloud. Angel, being the ever-present helper she was, released a whip crack of magic that contained the Gale of Darkness attack. The Editor's attention then focussed onto her. That enchanted blade he wielded could quite easily send her back into death...

As the Editor advanced, she took cover and set a detonation of her own upon him. He brushed it aside like it were an irksome fly. Deciding that she wasn't worth it, he turned his attention to Arke once more.

He thrust his hand into the earth and drew out a long javelin of stone. That split into splinters then went flying towards Arke. The Editor laughed, towering pride leading him to believe he was winning easily. He thought he would win with 6th Class techniques. Edward could have beaten him back by now. Was the Supreme Mage not all he appeared?

"Are you really this weak? Is this all you have? Pathetic!" The Editor punctuated this with Imperial Impaler, a Earth technique that made spikes of stone spout from the ground to impale the enemy. Invented by the 5th king of Arche.

"Idiot! Even I could counter those techniques! Do you think my boss will die that easily?" Edward snarled, struggling against the men who were carting him off to safety. They all looked slightly nervous as Edward became surrounded in a white corona. He was obviously stretching the Nesbitt Cage with his own internal power.

The Editor looked panicked by this. For a moment he saw the gold and silver armour Edward had been wearing in his mind. The Editor snarled and began to summon grievous amounts of Mana. Edward knew that he'd startled The Editor into action. "You've got your distraction sir...attack now..." Edward whispered, willing Arke to attack now, while the Editor was building his attack.

Arke stared the demon straight in the face. "Lets finish this already." He said, throwing his sword forward towards the Editor. The demon prepared to block the spinning blade flying through the air, but moments before it hit his defenses, Arke had grabbed the sword out of mid air. Taking advantage of a quick let down of his guard, Arke delivered a swift punch to the demons stomach. Stepping back, Arke pulled out a cloth and wiped his gauntlets off. The demon quickly exploded with purple smoke before Arke turned his attentions back to Edward. "It is not my place to kill him. He will find a way off the black plane soon, and I suggest you find a way to get rid of him. Come." He said, his men quickly surrounding Edward and guiding him along. "In here." Arke said opening a large room.

His men quickly obliged, guiding him in. "Did you forget the girl?" Arke sighed, looking at his men. One quickly ran off and returned with Angel and led her in too.

Sitting down across from Edward, and Angel, Arke looked at them with his liquid silver eyes. "Sir Edward Morgan, Third Class mage. I have been closely monitoring your progress. A self exorcism is impressive, and very few can perform one." He leaned forward towards the two of them. "It might just be a guess, but there might have been something written in the Script of Genes about you two." He smiled and sat back up. "But it is my duty to follow through on orders given to me by my uppers. I have been ordered to sentence you to a suspension of your Unity license. The one known as the Editor is a dangerous being and one linked to you. Your presence puts others at risk, and as such you must leave." Arke suddenly became cold, and his face more serious. "You shall not be permitted to enter these halls until you rid the world of this creature. Any crimes or acts committed by the Editor will be placed and charged upon you as well. That is all. You are dismissed." Arke said standing up and leaving Edward to take in what had just happened.

Edward's whole existence crashed about his eyes. But he was thankful. At least Arke had had the decency to not sugar-coat the truth. It was scientific fact: The Editor was part of him. He was a part of the Editor. His darker half could never truly be destroyed except by one person. Edward himself.

"I understand. This monster will die then, if it is fit for the Unity, I shall leave you forever. I wish to contact my master. Rela Cael is his name. He may have passed through here." Edward spoke, his voice husky and distant. Angel looked at him with large round eyes as Edward just accepted it. He got to his feet, walking over to the table upon which his armour had been stored upon before his trial. Who knew that victory could be so bitter?

"Please know this Arke. I do not blame you or the Unity for this decision. I am purely an individual from this moment on. The Unity holds no sway over me from this moment on." Edward proclaimed, pulling the last of the straps tight on his armour. The men around Edward watched as he placed his helmet on, obscuring his face. Angel shuddered as Edward belted on the sword he'd been found with. Edward needed to name it...that would come later. When the sword had obtained its purpose.

Edward turned, his cape swirling impressively as he moved towards the door. The soldiers parted like the red sea before him, treating him like an outcast. A leper outside their gates. How foolish man had become.

Angel moved after Edward, her serious little face filled with contempt and rage for the men around Edward. He didn't seem to notice the most venomous look was reserved for him.
