SHIFTER

an urban novella
by breezy

They came, breaking the stillness of the night.
Not a sound could be uttered by their quickness.
It came about, when Pharaoh was stubborn to let them go
That the Lords killed every firstborn in the land
The firstborn of beasts.

Laura crawled under her sheets pulling them high over her head. She could hear the commotion all too loudly.

"Απόκρυψη της γρήγορα" Ambrose hissed.

Laura's head turned up at the sound. Why had he said to hide her. Was the sounds resonating in her ears not the ones of deliverance? Surely so, since he'd taken it upon himself to speak Greek. He only did that when he didn't want the others to hear. She cringed at the pain between her legs and grabbed at her stomach.

"Not now." She whimpered.

Ambrose sauntered into the room followed by Julian. His brown eyes didn't hold the warmth they usually did. They were steady and hard, almost unmoving as he stared into the blackness of the room.

Julian suddenly wavered as he took her mood. "She's in labor."

Ambrose head snapped in the direction of the door. Laura was sure the others could now hear the commotion from the seemingly quiet streets.

"Θα πρέπει να κατατμηθεί. Ο Κύριος είναι κοντά."

Laura focused trying to decipher Ambrose's words. We must split up... the Lord is near. Laura's eyes widened.

"They're going to kill us."

Julian sprang into action and as soon as he touched her a calm swept through Laura's body freely.

"Hush now Laura. You must birth the child and get to safety." Ambrose said quietly. He motioned to Julian. "Use the east exit, its the quickest way."

Somehow Laura knew this was the last she would see of Ambrose. Of them all. She would miss them terribly, they were there for her in her time of need and now she had brought them pain. A swift death.

Ambrose read my thoughts. "We will fight hard, you are the last of us and your firstborn must live. I will tell them your goodbyes." He kissed her forehead and touched her stomach before walking out of the room to join the others in preparation for battle.

Julian carried her out the east exit, running quickly through the streets in search of shelter. She could feel the baby fighting to be free from between her legs but she felt no pain. Julian had made sure of that.

"It's time." Julian set Laura down in the alleyway.
"How long do we have?"

Laura listened to the stillness. "A couple minutes." She pushed hearing her babies first cries. Julian touched her silencing her immediately. "We have to leave her." Laura shook her head furiously. "No!" Julian broke the umbilical chord free from mother and child.

"It's the only way."
"I refuse."
Julian took the child from Laura's feeble arms and tossed it into a garbage can. Hurt ripped through him and moved onto Laura as they both reveled in despair.

"It'll be safer this way."

He ran into the darkness unwillingly pulling her along until Laura could know longer hear the steady beat of her child's heart. It was then that she heard the click of a gun and she knew their world was over.

Aaliyah tapped her manicured fingernails against the wood desk now holding her prisoner. She glared at the clock. Why couldn't time go any faster? She huffed distracting herself with fake memories of her past. She could see it so clearly in her head. Her mother Laura hugging her to her chest singing something soft and sweet. Julian would walk into the room and complain it was late, that she had to sleep, but would read a story to her anyway.

"Is time going to slowly for you Aaliyah, you can always excuse yourself?"

Aaliyah snapped out of her daydream. "No, Ms. Cortez." Her teacher immediately went back to teaching and Aaliyah was all too happy when the bell to let school out rang. She hated school, she always got the material much quicker then the other kids. She stood out in gym because of her height and odd athletic ability for someone of her age. But worst of all she looked different not because of her maturity but her cultural makeup. She was Puerto Rican, Black, Chinese and Italian. As if her figure wasn't more then enough of a distraction, students stared at her Asian eyes, olive colored skin, and silky hair like she were some type of mixed breed they couldn't understand.

Aaliyah walked to the corner of the parent pickup, switching her hips pulling all attention. That was another thing. Boys. She despised them, hated their nasty thoughts and cat calls. Aware of the attention she pulled down her white Obama tee and pulled up her favorite pair of low rider denim jeans. She had the urge to dust of her Reebok classics but she knew if she bent over there would only be a wave of boys flocking to her side.

"Hey li-li" Nick said walking up. She paused to take in his full figure. His hair was freshly cut with waves as far as the eye could see. His white tee clung to his chest and the muscles of his caramel skin greeted her eyes. His pants were low but not enough to show his boxers and his forces were clean as always.

"Hey Nick."
"Beautiful day isnt it?"

Aaliyah's green eyes scanned the sky. It was sunny, with puffy cumulus clouds in the sky.

"Yeah" she said simply.
"You going to the spring dance when we get back from break?"
"No. Dancing isn't my thing."
"You look like you could be a pretty good dancer to me."

Of course he thinks I'm a good dancer, Aaliyah thought. Everybody thinks I'm good at everything.

Aaliyah shrugged. "I'll think about it."

Just then Ambrose's blue Jeep Liberty turned into the roundabout of the parent pickup area. Without another word she hurried into Ambrose's car hoping he'd missed the conversation.

"Hey." Ambrose smiled.
"How was school?"
"Boring and long." He shook his head.
"I bet some make it better days then others."

Aaliyah averted his playful gaze, embarrassed.

"When will you teach me?" She said quietly.

Ambrose's face hardened and his forehead creased. A sign that he was deep in thought.

"When the appropriate time arrives." With a weary look he pulled out onto the street, ending our conversation.

Aaliyah lugged her black messenger bag onto her desk and started up the computer. She hated when Ambrose was like this. Ambrose was a boxer, a talented one at that. She could hear him even now beating his speed bag to a poor fluff of leather. But he refused to teach her. He was always talking about the need to be prepared and defend yourself. He said it as if something was coming after them, the urgency in his voice so deep it scared her at times, but he wouldn't teach her. It was like he was afraid of something. The thought made Aaliyah smile. Big muscular Ambrose, with olive skin that seemed to radiate a glow, afraid of something. It seemed so unlikely.

She walked into the kitchen a poured herself a glass of grapefruit juice. She relished the thought of drinking a soda, Ambrose was an extremely healthy person and it showed in his performance when he boxed.

"Ambrose."
"Yes?" He continued to beat his speed bag but slowed a bit.
"Why do you live alone?"

He pause confused.

"I mean, don't you ever want a girlfriend. You never go out really. You're always home or boxing. Don't you ever want... more?"

He thought and his lips turned upward into a smile. "Everlast is the best girlfriend for me." He looked at me thoughtfully. "Rosa is coming over. Be sure to make the house tidy."

A smile crept onto Aaliyah's face. Rosa was her Aunt Sarah's daughter and her favorite cousin. Rosa was handicapped though from the waist down, not that it stopped her from doing whatever she felt like doing, she was a lively person and her smile could make even the night just a bit brighter.

"Okay."

She hurried to tidy the house while Ambrose took a rest from his speed bag and put together some leftover lasagna from the night before. Soon she could hear Sarah's heavy but quick steps walking up to the door but not the sound of tires.

"Aunt Sarah!" I said excitedly but soon the smile fell from my face. Her hair was a mess with leaves and twigs in it, like she'd been rolling around in the forest all day. Her clothes were dirty and torn and she shivered like there was some eternal cold her body couldn't get rid of. She stormed in past me and when Ambrose saw her his eyes grew in anger and wonder.

"I tried to fight them off. They got Rosa..." She groaned and whimpered kneeling to the floor in despair. Ambrose closed the door and gripped her hands. "Go in yo your room little one and await my presence."

Aaliyah stared at Ambrose like he was foreign. "Why was he talking like that?"

"No, I want to know what's going on, if Rosa's in danger..."
"Go now, it is for your own benefit" He turned his back to Aaliyah focusing on Sarah once again. "Come now woman, show me the source of your strife."

Sarah's eyes rolled back so you could only see the whites of her eyes, her body stopped shivering and now she kneeled still. Ambrose's hands were interlocked with her's and he closed his eyes. Then a strange feeling over-powered Aaliyah and she fell straight to the floor. There was deep, piercing scream and I could see Rosa being lifted from her chair. "Don't hurt her!" It was Sarah screaming, fighting what ever was holding her back, Aaliyah understood now that she was seeing the scene from Sarah's eyes.

A man in a clown costume cackled his face caked in an ugly make that smeared from where someone had hit him. Rosa was still her eyes fixed on the clown who'd picked her up out of her chair. "I wouldn't do that if I were you." She said her voice even. Rosa kicked him in the stomach and he flew back against the wall dropping her to the ground. The clown cracked his neck and moved away from the dent he'd created in the wall of their home.

She fought hard and at some point even Sarah broke free of her oppressors and struck them down unfortunately to no avail. A dart sailed through the room and caught Rosa in the neck just as she was about to stab the clown. Rosa crumpled to the ground and suddenly Aaliyah felt like she was on fire. Sarah screamed, someone was shocking the life out of her. And then everything went black. Sarah found herself in the forest and she struggled their for days on end like she was trapped in a maze to find her way back. She came here looking as disheveled as she was when she'd awoken in the forest.

Aaliyah got up, breathing heavily. She looked around her room. "Thank God, it was only a dream."

"It was no dream." I heard Ambrose say. Sarah was next to him, the color seemed to have returned to her body and she had cleaned up and changed. Aaliyah looked at him stunned. "You read my mind."

Ambrose sighed and his faced looked much older than his 26 year old body. "It is time Aaliyah, that you understood what you can do. It it time I taught you of the Pharaoh and the Lords."
