Vulnerable Esther and feisty Cyndi?

I've rewatched both Lu Guang Sen Lin and Tian Guo De Jiayi (Heaven's Wedding Gown) recently and I think Cyndi Wang's character Ai Qing has some similarities to Esther's Sophie, but also some differences.

They both are young, innocent girls, but Sophie is actually meant to be a few years older, in her early 20s (even though Esther was only about 17 when she played the part) and she is an elementary school teacher, whereas Ai Qing is only 18 and an innocent farm girl. But Ai Qing shows a lot of courage in the early episodes when she scares of a pickpocket in Paris and when she stands up to Lu ZiHao when he nearly runs her over and offers her money in compensation. But as the series goes on, though, I think she becomes more passive and weepy, constantly turning to either ZiHao or Hainuo for comfort and consolation.

I think Esther with her elaborate hair styles and and fluffy white dresses is more like the Mary Pickford characters Callistamon has been discussing--although Cyndi does become vulnerable at times, too.

I think I thought of comparing them because both drama had Leon Williams as the first male lead.

First off, I'm going to move this to the appropriate spot since it contains elements of both dramas.

Then I'll back later to discuss since I need to think this over.

I would love to read others' points of views on this though.

So where has the topic gone if we want to compare Esther in Lu Guang Sen Lin and Cyndi in Tianguo de Jiayi?

It's in the "Past" section, lol. If you scroll up, you can see the arrow pointing to it. I still have the old link in the other spot so it would direct you to the new location if you're confused.

I dislike the fact that they had to make Ai Qing so weak later in the drama. It was also why I began to hate that drama more than like. I think they tried too hard to make Chen Hai Nuo the hero so had to make her so weak. I would understand why she did not act as fiercely in front of Zi Hao and others since she did not want more bad press or troubles for him. But relying on that insecure Hai Nuo who needs some weak girl to reassure himself that he is in control? Get out of here. By making Ai Qing so weak later made her character inconsistent. That was why I like it more when she finally stood up to Ken and the other girls.

I loved Sophie in Green Forest, My Home. She was really cute and funny. Though she was somewhat a weakling at various points of the drama but I thought her character has very strong will. That counts more. Though the same pattern repeats since both were SETTV dramas. They made Owen so goody good that annoyed me.

That reminds me of one thing though it's a bit off topic from our little discussion. Why do they always make two male leads so good in dramas versus making the other girl so evil or suffering psychological disorders (of some sort) when the triangle involves two girls?

We just got a widescreen TV for the first time (it is quite energy efficient) and I watched Heaven's Wedding Gown all over again from the beginning. I still love it! But I have to agree that AI Qing was a lot feistier in the beginning. For example, when she manages to get ahold of the little horse figurine and stands up to Lu Zi Hao's bullying. And when he nearly runs her over when she's on her bike, and she refuses to take any money from him. Later on, more to stretch the story out, she becomes rather feeble and weepy.
I think initially she is a lot less girlie than Esther's sweet, romantic character in Green Light Forest. Sophie did have very strong opinions which she would voice loudly, but on the other hand she was always falling into water and having to be rescued--and swooning!! Such as episode in the conveniently located love nest in the forest.
Hmmm I might have to watch it all over again because even though I wasn't that keen on the plot, I did enjoy the beautiful scenery in it...

I think Shadowofthenight makes a good point by stating that they made Ai Qing's character weak on purpose to boost Hai Nuo's character up. Since they need a weakling for him to keep rescuing so it made sense that it would be Ai Qing since it can't be Xiang Zhen since she's too stubborn and rough in many other areas.
