OK, so who can speak really good English? I haven't heard Jacky speak much English for awhile. There was a variety show a few years back with 183 Club, hosted by Renfu, and it was like an English vocab competition. Jacky obviously knew a lot--so he should, he's Canadian, but when he said a few things in English it wasn't perfectly idiomatic. When a mistake came up in the quiz--some kind of confusion between 'will' and 'wheel' he said, 'it's called wheel, like four-wheel drive'. It probably would have been more natural to say, 'It's pronounced wheel' but I'm getting picky, aren't I? His writing in English has become worse and worse since I've been following his career, but I think that's natural under the impact of all that Chinese and Taiwanese dialect. Leon Jay Williams started a tradition in TV dramas of giving some characters a lot of English lines. He spoke a lot of English in HWG, GLF and a few lines in My Lucky Star, 'Madam Wilson! Madam Wilson!' He apparently grew up in an English-speaking family in Singapore and he is perfectly fluent but in Singapore they speak one of the New Englishes where there are a lot of local expressions in it and a local accent. Some people call it 'Singlish' I love the way he speaks English. It is very melodic. |

I think you're getting picky with how Jacky pointed out the mistake. I meant it wasn't that poetic of him to put it that way, but it was still correct if he wanted to say, "It's called wheel." (LOL) But anyhow, talking about that show and speaking English, I honestly had no idea what they were talking about half of the time, no wonder Jacky did so bad on the test and kept getting hit. I was like, "What?" The way it was pronounced was not correct for some of the terms yet the others understand it fine because they were used of hearing it that way but it when it was not correct as how Jacky learned it, he did not understand. I don't think I woud've gotten it right either when 'wheel' could be pronounced into 'whale'. I only watched HWG with Leon and okay a bit of MLS but was nowhere near the part where he spoke English since I think he got less English lines in there (or something). Can't say much until I finally watch dramas the proper way, lol. Who else do you think speak English well? I think Wilber Pan should, right? I meant I heard him delivering some lines in English in 'Miss No Good' and he was great with it. He also sang really good in English (or at least understandable to me, lol). Of course we should not forget James, right? Not sure about speaking since I don't remember him speaking on some show but his writing is fairly good. I'll come back for more later. More thoughts, everyone? |

I think another star who speaks really good English is David Chen, the one Rachelabichen likes. I think he moved to California when he was quite young--11? 12?--and he speaks good US English. There are some very amusing scenes in Lu Guang Sen Lin, where he and Leon Jay Williams shout at each other in their different kinds of English. I agree, DTLCT, I don't think Leon Williams had many English lines in My Lucky Star. Jacky Zhu sings well in English and I think he does a voice-over in English on Feeling All Right on Gao Jie. 'It's 6:45 and I'm feeling kinda hot...' That one. His English on his blog just seems kind of careless, but his Chinese is very primitive. He constantly uses the wrong character. He knows what the sound of a word is but he often uses the wrong character to represent it. But it least he tries. |

Wu Zun's English is quite good too. Though that could just be me. But he was on 'Tian Tai Chong Chong Chong' for the games and was really good with the English speaking game. The way he talk with the right sentence structures, etc made it sound so smooth. EDIT: Qiao Qiao's English pronounciation is quite accurate too. (Well, depends on the accent that is, lol.) A nice example would be in Mr. Fighting when she told Zax to, "Say sorry." I laughed for days on that one.

Wu Zun did an MBA at RMIT University in Melbourne. So he had to use English a lot then. And he and his father and his friends were back here in Melbourne for Chinese New Year. So, I agree, he is quite competent in English. |

Thanks for the info on Wu Zun, Vanadia. I remember watching some shows with FRH on it and I was surprised that his English was that good. (Though it was because I did not know of his background too much until I look it up more later.) I heard people say that Jolin Tsai's English is pretty good but I wonder since I'm not familiar with her, anyone know? There has also been criticism of that though since people say that those who praised her are not that good in English themselves either. |

About Jacky, I haven't heard him speak English very much (other than the famous voice-over on his album Gao Jie) and that bit on the 'Enlgih competition' on that variety showwe were talking about) but last night I was watching old eps of Prince Turned Into Frog and I saw the ones with 'Michael', where Jacky plays that rich boy who tricks Tianyi (Qiao En) into attending a bikini party. And at the party at the reception centre, when he sees Zi Qian (Sam Wang) play darts, he yells, 'Bullseye!' in English. And when he invites Tianyu to dance (to show that she doesn't know how to do the waltz) he says, 'May I?' And later he says, 'Cheers!' Cute. Ming Dao's accent in English when he has to speak to an American business partner is quite garbled, but Gino's was quite good. (I've forgotten Gino's surname. Is it Cao or Cai?) |

Gino Cai. The reason I remember is because I'm currently working on a fan fic that has him in it, lol. I would imagine Gino's English is better since I heard K-One sang some English songs before. I like his English in AQMFS, lol. I know only he speaks a bit like the line, "Nothing is wrong when love is right." (LOL) (And he got to show off his Cantonese too.) Talking about that, Sam's English is a bit weird sometimes. Probably because he was tired though since I watched some behind the scenes of the PTIF and AQMFS soundtrack, he's decent but NOT like super extraordinary good. But I guess at least he knows what he's talking about, lol. A bit strange on the pronunciation sometimes though. I would say Eric Suen Yiu Wai (Sun Yao Wei) but his writing is a bit careless sometimes or he's just likes to short-hand things. (Wouldn't vouch for it since I haven't hear him speak for a while, but he sings it really well for the English version of 'Here I Go'.) |

i heard Sam speak English in the a behind-the-scenes feature on one of the 183 Club DVDs. It was one of the ones where they had to jump into a swimming pool, so maybe the MV they wee filming was Bomba, Bomba. They had to stay up all night to film it. Sam was grumpy and answered a question in English quite well, except he said 'take some rest' where 'have some rest' might have been more idiomatic. But on that variety show that was that odd English competition, Sam used the expression 'She drives me crazy' very well. Ehlo seemed to have very little confidence in English... |

Another star who played a character who was supposed to speak good English but did not quite manage to do it well was Zai Zai in Mars. The character Ling and his twin brother Sheng were meant to have been sent to Los Angeles to live with relatives for several years from the age of 8. When he speak some English in an English class where the professor has been harrassing Qi Luo (Barbie) he does not sound like a native speaker or in fact someone who had lived on the West Coast for that long. I've heard that when Zai Zai was first cast in Meteor Garden he spoke Chinese with a strong country accent. LOL. |

I just read an article about Zai Zai on the AF News Portal and he admitted that he didn't have any plans to try to get roles in Hollywood because his English wasn't very proficient. I noticed that hasn't stopped Jay Chou, though. What's that thing he's in? Pandamen? |

I think because Jay Chou has star power so it doesn't matter if he could speak it well or not. *shrugs* Whatever suits him, I guess. By the way, I just saw a clip of Tang Feng narrating about the set he was shooting at and he was introducing everyone and later he pointed the camera to himself (possibly someone holding the camara for him - not sure) and he spoke in English, saying, "My name is Denny." (That was cute!) His English is kind of raw but I actually like the way he said it. |

That guy who played freddie in HWG and Qiao En's gynaecologist in Fated to Love you can speak quite good English--the one Callistamon was speaking about awhile back. He had to say 'Sorry!' a lot in HWG and he said it very naturally. |

Deric Wan's English must be decent. I meant I stumbled upon an entry he actually wrote in English: http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_4975be000100dkft.html (It's a tribute to MJ) since his grammar is quite good I'm asumming he's a decent speaker. But that's just leaping. Just thoughts, lol. |
