A Short Overview of Jacky’s Career

Jacky Zhu Fang Gang is a highly talented singer, keyboard specialist, actor and model whose career highs and lows have both thrilled and sometimes dismayed his fans. Jacky was born in Vancouver, Canada on 22 August 1979. His well-to-do family was in business as manufacturers and retailers of ‘Sally’ brand bicycles. Jacky has one elder brother, James Zhu Qiang Bo, (born 1978) who is currently a well-established songwriter and music producer for Jungiery Stars.

Jacky first broke into the world of entertainment when he overcame a history of stage fright to win the Vancouver stage of the New Singers Competition in 1998. Jacky went on to represent Canada in the international final of the competition in Hong Kong, and was first runner-up.

Jacky began his university studies at Langara College in Vancouver, but apparently dropped out to pursue his music career in Taiwan. In 2000, his striking looks came to the attention of modeling agency ‘Kai Wo’, and he appeared in magazine and television ads for products such as ACER notebook computers, NOKIA cellphones and various other products such as shampoo and mineral water.

In 2003, the singer sought the services of respected producer Li Ya Ming, and brought out a solo album Confession/ Gao Jie, under the Universal label. Although the eleven tracks were carefully crafted and catchy and Jacky sang them with great feeling, the album failed to attract much interest and Jacky was dropped from the label.

The album did open an important door, however. Soon Jacky was signed by Jungiery Stars as a singer with boyband 183 Club. The band, stylish, funny and musically competent, soon proved to be one of J-stars’ most successful acts. Fans snapped up the First Album and a number of prize-winning soundtracks to idol dramas such The Prince Who Turned into a Frog and Magicians of Love. Jacky quickly established himself as lead singer and music expert, and was widely admired as the group’s most outgoing and charismatic performer.

Meanwhile, Jacky had taken up acting. In 2003, he appeared as a trainee airline pilot in the undistinguished Hi-Fly. He also appeared in two episodes of the idol drama, The Prince Who Turned into a Frog (2005). His two largest and most famous roles, however, were as the loan-shark gangster Ying in Heaven’s Wedding Gown (2003) and the flamboyant playboy hairdresser in the top-rating Magicians of Love.

In March 2007, after a grueling tour of mainland China, Jacky developed a severely infected salivary gland cyst. While fangirls cooed over the post-operative photos, bad rumors began to circulate. The paparazzi snapped a photo of the star recuperating on a beach in Hong Kong, applying sunblock to a model’s back and later tracked the couple to her house where he reputedly stayed overnight. The J-stars strict manager, Sun De Rong, who had warned Jacky repeatedly about his wild behavior at parties and nightclubs, and his frequent appearances in the tabloids, was incensed. On 9 June, Sun De Rong shocked fans and the Taiwanese entertainment world by expelling Jacky from J-stars and 183 Club. Devastated, the idol was soon successful in signing with new management: Tangerine Entertainment Co. or Hong Ju Zi.

While many fans considered getting up a petition for the star’s reinstatement, even worse news came to light. The Liberty Times reported that the real reason for Jacky’s sacking was that the police had swooped on a number of entertainers rumored to use drugs, and Jacky had tested very high for recent marijuana use. From the first, Jacky agreed to cooperate with the authorities. He entered compulsory rehab in mid-October 2007 and was not released until 47 days later.

Five days after his release, he posted on his blog a handsome apology to his family, friends, and fans:

“Inside the rehab centre I thought about so many things. Everyday I thought of repenting. Really, I’m sorry for letting you guys down, sorry for letting you guys worry. Being a celebrity, I should be bringing happiness and good music to everybody, but I wasted all my effort these past few years. It’s really not worth it, and left you guys feeling hurt. I really am sorry. But then again I want to say thank you to all of you who never gave up and supported me all the way. I’m really touched…”

Jacky then decided to take an entire year off from the entertainment industry, to do some additional soul searching and to reset his goals. He finally re-emerged in the public eye in October 2008 when he launched an upmarket wine and sushi bar called Pause in Taipei’s eastern suburbs. The following month he used his blog to announce his comeback as a singer. After a number of delays, he finally appeared on 5 December as a PK or challenge singer on the popular televised singing competition, One Million Stars. Wearing a dark outfit and a dashing silk scarf, he sang Yuan Liang Wo, a sad ballad which asks for forgiveness, that had been made popular by Jam Hsiao the previous year. Jacky tied twice with the singer he had challenged, but the judges eventually declared him the winner.

Since then Jacky has appeared in a number of other variety shows as a contestant in games and as a singer. He seems to have adopted a more serious and dignified image, and having sought some professional voice coaching, has been singing beautifully. He reached level six of Bai Wan Da Ge Xing and drew sighs from the studio audience with his sweet singing. He also was hilarious as a contestant in a recent episode Tian Cai Chong Chong Chong. Many fans are wondering if he will finally bring out a solo album. On his blog he has promised a more active year and that he will make it. Will he be able to do so in a global economic recession and the conservative Year of the Ox? Visit this thread to find out!

Might be good idea to post it up on events, lol. But it's all right since we're talking about Jacky anyway. But I think it's no big deal since he was just escorting Betty Huang Yi around since he was free. It was her first time in TW. No worries about that. (I hope.)

True that. I think that the agent or maybe someone wasn't free so her agent knows Jacky and asked if he could give her a tour or something. Since another article said that she said they're getting along as friends or something like that.

Jacky seems to be doing a bit of the tour guide think lately. Remember was it during Western New Year that he and Doris Lai Wei Ru were showing mutual friends from Beijing around the Keelung Night Market. Hope he is still spending some of his time at his winde and sushi bar and it wasnt just a brief enthusiasm...
