After the feast...

Kailith hurried up the corridor towards the headmaster's office. After being caught 'playing' with Kerry at the start of term feast, he insisted on seeing her, no doubt to give her a good chewing out.

Resigned, she knocked briskly on his door, waiting to be asked in. She hoped this didn't take long, she was exhausted and wanted to look in on her first years before bed.

Alex was slightly disappointed with the way things had unfolded at the feast. He didn't expect everyone to love the idea of no extra curriculars, but the fallout was a little more than he'd planned. And there was the incident with Professor Callaghan.

A bottle of bourbon was sitting open on his desk, next to a glass that appeared to be half empty. He took another sip of the amber coloured liquid and sighed heavily as it warmed him on it's way down his throat. Slightly startled by the knock at the door, Alex slammed the rest of his drink, wincing slightly, and quickly set the bottle beside him on the floor.

"What a lush..." Whispered one of the paintings that decorated the walls of the office.

Alex just waved it off, and ran a hand through his purposely messy brown hair. "It's open." He called to his guest as he straightened himself in his chair.

"Come in."

Kailith stepped quickly into the office and shut the door behind her. She sat down on one of the chairs in front of the headmaster's desk. She crossed her legs and laid her interlocking fingers on her knee. She thought she looked serious and responsible, when inside she was boiling over with laughter. She had gotten pretty good at controlling it over the years though.

"You wanted to see me sir?"

"Ah yes. I did." Alex answered, rubbing the back of his neck and removing his wand from his robes. With a quick flick of his wrist, he cast the imperturbable charm on his office. Just in case any prying ears had followed Professor Callaghan this evening.

"Might I inquire as to why you were late to the feast?" He asked, retrieving the bourbon from the floor, and conjuring up a second glass. "Bourbon?" He offered, pouring himself a glass.

Kailith relaxed slightly in her chair. He wasn't going to yell at her, at least not yet. She looked around the room and thought, as she always did when she was in his office, that it suited him. And that made her smile.

"I'll pass on the drink dear, but thanks. And I'm rather embarrassed to admit that the reason I was late isn't anything noble or great. Or even exciting. I simply lost track of the time. I was checking on the progress of a few plants, and on the way to the feast I made a quick detour by the dormitories to make sure the house elves had everything and everybody settled. I apologize for it sir."

And she truly was sorry, she didn't like to be late, no matter how many times it may happen.

Alex nodded when Kailith declined his offer, and made the other cup vanish. He replaced his wand, and took a sip of his drink as he listened to her. She'd been doing her job, just as he had suspected. He couldn't help but laugh.

"Kailith, in this office, and any other time we're alone, it's entirely acceptable to call me Alex. And no need for apologies, your actions were well in line with your duties both as professor and Head of House. I would have done the same thing given the situation." Alex noticed that his gaze was lingering on her a little longer than it should, and took another drink. He couldn't help himself, the rest of the castle was in bed, and here he was, alone with beautiful young woman. He scratched his neck again and smiled.

"Normally, I wouldn't have called you up here. However, considering my position, and the fact that we have new staff; it's of the utmost importance that I mind my appearance. I hope you understand." Alex paused and rose from his seat. He walked over to a nearby window, one with a view of the vacant, and moonlit Quidditch pitch. He stared out of it for a moment, trying to clear his mind before turning back to Kailith.

"I also might have wanted to be alone with you, if only for a moment."

Kailith felt one of her eyebrows raise. She hadn't expected the headmaster to be okay with her being late, let alone say that he himself would have done the same. She felt a sense of kinship at that moment, and smiled.

"I'm glad you understand Alex," the name rolling off her tongue. "I have to admit, I was expecting a tongue lashing." She gave a small chuckle that immediately stuck in her throat as he looked at her. She couldn't help but to stare back at him, as a wonderful warmth engulfed her body.

As he broke the contact and turned away, she took the opportunity to suck in a few quick breaths. That did little good to counteract his next comment though.

"Alone with me? Why, was there something you needed to tell me in private?" She secretly had a wish for why he wanted to be alone with her, but she didn't want to jump to conclusions.

Alex laughed and ran a hand through his purposely messy hair. "Were you anyone else, you would have." He winked at her and walked back over to his desk where he perched himself on the corner.

"Actually, yes. I thought that maybe you'd like to accompany me to dinner one evening. It's not generally my style to leave the school during a term, but I think Kaede can handle my affairs for one evening. Should you decide to join me, that is."

Alex had been wanting to do this for a while. Perhaps it wasn't the most professional of maneuvers, dating one of his staff, but he's always had this issue with succumbing to temptation. Besides, he trusted Kailith, and felt that she'd have to problem handling the situation before them with the utmost discretion.

Kailith laughed nervously and made a show of uncrossing and recrossing her legs, not trying to be seductive or sexy, but merely trying to stall for time while she got herself under control. She had always felt an attraction to Alex, but thought that it was one-sided.

"I would love to go to dinner with you one night. Just tell me when and where and I'll be there." There, she'd done it. She'd taken the plunge. Now who knew what would happen from here.

"Excellent," He started, "I'll send you an owl or something once my schedule clears. Kailith, I must impress upon you that this can't get out. Granted, for now, it is simply dinner. But I wouldn't want people to get the wrong impression about me--about us." He rose from the edge of his desk and walked to his office door with his hands behind his back. He paused upon his arrival, retrieved his wand once more, he removed the charm from the room.

He turned to her and smiled. "I'm sure you have students to look in on. I'll not keep you any longer." He said, resting his wand hand lightly on the door knob. He didn't want her to feel as those he was rushing her out of his office. This dismissal was the last thing he wanted. However, they both had work to do, and further flirtations and heated glances would do well to wait until their dinner date.
