Knocking Up the Headmaster; the morning after the feast

Kerry found a bit of spare time, and made sure he was doubly presentable, and actually dressed like a professional wizard, his robes done up over his dress shirt and tie, wearing his nicest pair of jeans, his black boots polished so they were scuff free. He'd even brushed his hair again and pulled it back in a tighter, neater, ponytail. His glasses, though totally unneeded for this little jaunt, were on his face. He was hoping to show that he too was a professional, an intellectual, a man who prized learning. Which was true, he just wanted to be sure he looked the part. Not the other part of him that was a bit more physically inclined.

He paused a moment outside the headmasters door, taking a deep breath, again making sure he was presentable, before he knocked (or otherwise made himself known) at the headmasters door. Hopefully the man was in. Kerry would be rather annoyed if he'd gone to such effort only to find the man wasn't in.

Alex was seated in a rather grand arm chair positioned behind said desk, and wore a rather weary expression on his face. He'd had a lot on his mind, and plate, since the feast, but was determined not to let it show. Placing the cap back onto a bottle of brandy, he tucked it away into one of the desk drawers as a knock came at the door. Alex took a moment to regain his composure.

"Come in." He called out to his visitor before lacing his fingers and resting his hands atop his rather tidy desk.

Kerry slipped in, smiling at the headmaster. "Hello headmaster. I was wondering if I could have a few moments of your time," he said, not coming more than a few steps into the room, waiting until he was invited to do so, first. He ran a hand over his too-red hair, making sure there were no stray fly-aways or loose strands.

"Of course, of course. Please, have a seat Professor." Alex replied as he gestured towards the large squashy armchairs sitting opposite him. He scratched the back of his neck, a nervous habit he'd had since his youth, and settled his hazel eyes on the younger man. He had a feeling he knew what this was about, given that it was far to early in the term to be having serious issues with students. But Alex was firm in his views, and was ready for whatever the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor would present him with.

"What can I do for you?"

"Thank you sir," Kerry smiled and took a seat, and although under any other circumstances he would have surely sprawled in such a comfy chair and made himself comfortable, he decided this called for a far more professional approach, and so remained towards the front of the chair with straight posture.

"I don't suppose there's anyway I can get you to reconsider the axing of the vast majority of extra curriculars?" Kerry asked with a small chuckle and a charming smile. "After all, all work and no play... The sports and arts and etc. have all been show to increase cognitive abilities, attention span, and autonomous learning capabilities in children." Kerry threw this tidbit out there in off handed fashion. The last thing he wanted to do was sound admonishing or like he thought he knew more than the headmaster. Especially considering that Kerry suspected that he just might, and the fact that he had a degree to that effect probably would not impress someone who thought they were an "old hand" in education. So, he used his most friendly and charming boy-next-door personality, not to mention that sweet Irish lit that most people found disarming.

"I had a feeling this is what you'd come for. And I assure you, Professor, that I do understand your position." Alex leaned back in his chair, with a slight look of self satisfaction upon his face, but not for the reasons one might expect.

"I've given thought to this matter, and I'm aware of the positive effects that extra activities could have. If you recall, I've not banned broomsticks or wizards chess sets."

Alex was glad that one of his staff actually approached him on the subject. He had no doubts that he'd made a wise choice in hiring Kerry, he obviously was a very clever man and had no problems questioning authority. Alex, always having been a man who thought for himself, could appreciate such qualities.

"That's very true, you didn't," Kerry nodded, acknowledging that. He steepled his fingers thoughtfully. He thought he had understood the situation, but he clearly didn't, and was trying to reevaluate. "Well sir," he said after a moment. "I'll admit, I assumed the worst about the situation. I seem to have been off base. I'm not above admitting that," he grinned ruefully. "So, since I'm being candid... why did you decide to nix the extra curriculars. I doubt it's going to make the students focus on their studies... more likely focus on how to hex the nose off your face," or whatever his sister was planning, which was surely something.

"No worries, most people, I imagine, felt the same way after the announcement. My fault, really. I could have explained things a little better, but I thought it made perfect sense." Alex laughed at Kerry's comment about students attempting to hex him.

"My intent is not at all malicious in nature. We give students holidays to visit their families, we end classes at a reasonable hour, there are weekend trips to Hogsmeade; so much time is being spent outside of the classroom. I can't justify closing down the school so the majority of the student population can sit on their rears for the afternoon watching Quidditch. I'll also not allow certain students to skip classes in order to participate in wizard chess tournaments." Alex had been so used to defending his point to parents and outraged community members that his speech had, as was prone to happening, become a little long winded.

"I will not support any activity that distracts from the main purpose of this school--learning. What the children choose to do in their free time is up to them. While I encourage study, I'll not make it mandatory, but will help to decrease the distractions by eliminating school organized teams and clubs.

Kerry chuckled softly, nodding a little. He could see the headmaster's perspective. He wasn't totally sure he was ready to jump on the bandwagon, but it at least made sense.

"Well, Sir, that's fair enough. I do have two more questions for you. I'll save the easiest for last. Professor Abner and I were talking, I come from a mostly muggle family and I'm sure you know that muggles have something called physical education. We were thinking that the students here at Hogwarts could really benefit from some more physical type education. Not as a class, but as a club, similar too, or even part of, dueling club. After all, dueling is more than just waving one's wand." Kerry sat back in his chair, relaxing a little. Not a lot, but enough that he didn't look like he had a steel rod for a spine. He was very curious what the headmaster would think of this, or muggle anything, really.

Alex laughed. He'd be raised by his grandparents, one half blood, one muggle born, and had attended muggle schools until he was old enough to come to Hogwarts. He was very well versed in the non-wizarding community, unlike some.

"I am familiar with physical education, and I think you have a valid point. You have my permission to incorporate it into dueling club, which, I assume considering your previous comments, you are interested it heading. Am I right?"
