Bloodline Name/Surname: Kurage Type: Kekkei Genkai Kekkei Genkai Type: Innate Element: [Standard] Suiton (Water) / Raiton (Lightning) [Advanced] Storm Description: Kekkei Genkai Background: The Kurage's kekkei genkai has made them at odds with the people of Kirigakure. A man centuries ago, lay dying on the beaches of Kirigakure's islands after a naval battle wiped out his entire fleet. In order to spare his life, he made a prayer and a pact to the god Hiruko. He swore to never return to war mongering for the remainder of his life as long as he was spared. Hiruko, a massive jellyfish, rose from the depths of the ocean and came to his aide. Hiruko however wasn't so generous. Along with his promise, he was made to carry a burden that would carry onto his children, and their children for generations to come. Hiruko fused a part of himself with the dying man to heal his wounds. In time he would come to find that this blessing was more of a curse, and that Hiruko did it to humiliate him. Clan Background: The Kurage Clan is a relatively passive bloodline in the islands of Kirigakure. They live their lives according to the sea, and their bloodline. Whenever Kirigakure suffers a crisis, they simply adapt and pull through marvelously. When war breaks out, they offer their services to the Mizukage, but only for his/her protection. They are not a clan to become involved in political affairs, and move forward with the government's decisions. Some have even said that this is because of their chakra affiliation, their innate ability to be passive and yielding to the tides of change. The clan has alluded to having a history for rejecting and banishing members of the clan who do not share the ability to produce Suiton chakra. This is determined at birth by placing the child in a small boat on the shore. Their natural water affinity will draw them into the ocean, where the mother will catch and bring them back to shore. The chance of a child not being born with an affinity for water is extremely unlikely--or so the Elder's claim. Only a handful of offspring have been rejected by the sea over the course of the clan's timeline. Because they did not share the affinity for water, they were unable to use the Irukandji, and thus existed as minor shinobi. Interestingly, most of these rejected shinobi eventually learned the Suiton element at a later point in their lives and reunited with the clan, albeit with less adept skills with the Irukandji. The other few members that never learned Suiton, harbored a distinct loathing for their clansmen, and refused to return to Kirigakure. Kekkei Genkai Information: The "Irukandji" as its called, has been deemed Kirigakure's secret weapon in war. When activated, the clan member can exude a gelatinous membrane from their pores, removing a portion of the water in their body to fuel its generation. This translucent membrane covers their skin, and like a jellyfish, it releases poionous nematocysts on contact with the enemy. As such, the Kurage Clansmen are employed as the Mizukage's guard for a variety of purposes. The "Irukandji" can be used to shield the flesh from other harmful substances, such as caustic chemicals. The membrane can be used to plug wounds, or orifices (namely the ears, to guard against water pressure). In order to maximize the "Irukandji", the Kurage clansmen specialize in taijutsu that aims at mass physical contact, delivering poison to their open wounds. The nematocysts will sink into the flesh, and inject hundreds of microscopic venom filled barbs into the exposed tissues. This poison acts as an inflammatory agent, causing the muscles to seize up and slow the victim. Like a jellyfish, the "Irukandji" has a seemingly divine ability, one that is coveted and guarded jealously by Kirigakure. The Kurage, if faced with a life or death situation, can sacrifice most of their chakra, and in turn they mimic the Jellyfish life cycle. Rather than heal the wound, the body enshrouds itself in a cocoon of spongy tissue. When the cocoon ruptures after seventy-two hours, the clansmen will be younger. Those faced with extremely fatal wounds, have even been able to return as infants. So in effect, the Kurage can never die, unless their cocoon's are broken prematurely. When the Mizukage's men first witnessed this ability, they were astounded, if not horrified at this ability. They calculated that the level of chakra sacrificed (ex. 50%), would reverse their aging process by half. Thus, 50 percent of their chakra, returned them to 25 years prior. During war, it wasn't uncommon for the veteran's of the shinobi service to appear marvelously young for their rank. The critical drawback is that it couldn't be performed on the battlefield; a cocoon requires safety and security, and at least 72 hours of peace to regenerate. Kekkei Genkai Chakra: The Kurage specialize in water and lightning based techniques, threading the elements together to create devastating attacks that seem to defy the chakra cycles. One such example, is the use of electrolysis; drawing hydrogen and oxygen from the water with Raiton, then manipulating those elements for breathing or attack. The late Elder Suibo was known in the islands for "creating fire from water", by igniting the Hydrogen into a wall of white fire. He was known for his age; 130, and for defending Kirigakure's shipyards with his "Izanami" Technique. Water Chakra is taught to Gennin to improve their skills with the Irukandji, so that they may draw on it easily. Lightning supplements it by providing movement; extending the Irukandji from them to attack with a reasonable range, like the tentacles of a jelly. However it isn't uncommon to find member's regularly executing Suiton-Raiton fusions. Additionally, this chakra seems to have a purpose for communicating with Hiruko; if enough members gather to perform the same technique, Hiruko will surface from his lair. Its unknown if others have been rejected from the Kurage Bloodline, however its noted that Water Chakra is only necessary for the creation of the Irukandji. Thus it can be assumed that their ability to thread elements into Advanced Forms is passed on, even if the Irukandji cannot be created. Hiruko Information: According to mythology, when Izanami and Isanagi first made the wedding vow they danced around Heaven's Pillar the opposite direction, and thus when Izanami became pregnant her child was disfigured. That child was collectively known as Hiruko, and she cast him into the sea. Because of Hiruko the Jellyfish's existence, historians have begun to wonder if Izanami was actually a sorceress, and Izanagi a warrior and that perhaps this "mythos" is partly true. Hiruko certainly exists. Off of Kirigakure, on an outlying island composed of volcanic rock, the jellyfish resides in a caldera. Hiruko's caldera shelters a host of creatures from the deep ocean, and the caldera itself is riddled with small passages cut into the cliffs by the Kurage. The island is protected by sealing techniques, and somewhere within its walls lies a library , accessible on by the Kurage with the Irukandji Bloodline technique. Hiruko can be called forth into the underground salt-water lake for advice and counseling. The lake is lit beneath by bioluminescent organisms, and the lake is surrounded by pillars supporting the roof and seating. The lake is said to be the holder of the legendary Amenonokoku Spear, but this is perhaps a mere rumor. Hiruko very rarely gives out information on the Kurage. In fact he is very secretive about the clansmen he has rejected from the Kurage. Most notably, all five of them have carried Fire, Wind or Earth chakra's at birth. While the Kurage take the sea's tides literally, Hiruko appears to be rejecting them for a reason. And from his vague wording, its not because they lack the Kekkei Genkai. Limitations: The Kurage are highly prone to Doton Techniques, primarily those that involve hardening and softening techniques, and some have been crippled in past generations by "petrification". Their membrane's are also weak to toxic, unnatural chemicals, as the membrane is re-absorbed into the body after use. Thus they can be intoxicated quickly, or sickened if exposed for periods without shedding the layer. The "Irukandji" doesn't protect against piercing or thin weapons, as it can be sliced by blades and even wires. Clansmen who do not utilize Suiton Chakra (at all) cannot create the Irukandji. This doesn't apply of course to those who choose to learn Suiton as their second. Additionally, the advanced "Catalyst" element (Suiton + Raiton) cannot be utilized. However the ability to blend elements still exists. |
